Journal of Marine Science and Technology

With the development of the smart shipping industry, unmanned vessel technology is rapidly evolving, accompanied by a demand for robust Internet of Things (IoT) communication security practices. Key communication technologies for the operation of unmanned vessels include external vessel communication. One crucial aspect is the verification of the identities of the parties involved in these communication systems, as this ensures secure and trusted interactions between unmanned vessels and port management authorities. Identity authentication plays a vital role in ensuring the secure communication of unmanned vessels. This paper aims to analyze potential risks related to identity authentication technology in unmanned vessel communication …

Sources Of Volatile Aromatic Congeners In Whiskey, Thomas J. Kelly, Christine O'Connor, Kieran N. Kilcawley Jan 2023

Sources Of Volatile Aromatic Congeners In Whiskey, Thomas J. Kelly, Christine O'Connor, Kieran N. Kilcawley

Articles

Whiskey’s complex and diverse flavor stems from a range of reactions that create congeners that are primarily dependent upon the cereal source/mash bill and each stage of the process: malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and cask maturation. Therefore, in theory, the congener profile of a whiskey is a summation of its ingredients and the specific parameters of each stage of the manufacturing process. Congener profiles have been used as biomarkers for quality and authentication; however, to date, insufficient information has been published in relation to the extensive profiling of congeners associated with specific whiskey styles/types or the intra-and inter-variability within brands, …

An Extractive Nanoelectrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry Method For Chinese Herbal Medicine Authentication, Chia-Hsin Lee, Hui-Chi Huang, Mei-Chun Tseng, Chao-Jung Chen Sep 2021

An Extractive Nanoelectrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry Method For Chinese Herbal Medicine Authentication, Chia-Hsin Lee, Hui-Chi Huang, Mei-Chun Tseng, Chao-Jung Chen

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Herein, we describe a rapid, sensitive, and nondestructive method—extractive nanoelectrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (EnESI-MS)—for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) authentication. The mass-spectral fingerprints of volatile compounds released from various TCMs can be rapidly acquired using EnESI-MS without sample pretreatment. EnESI-MS was applied to successfully differentiate between two commonly used medicinal herbs, Schisandra Chinensis and Schisandra sphenanthera, which are morphologically similar but exhibit different therapeutic effects. Specific volatile compounds of each herb in a ten-component Chinese herbal product, Jia Wei Xiao Yao San, were also identified, and the method was applied to discriminate between the commercial product and a substandard version.

Characterization Of L-Theanine In Tea Extracts And Synthetic Products Using Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis, Matteo Perini, Silvia Pianezze, Luca Ziller, Federica Camin Jun 2021

Characterization Of L-Theanine In Tea Extracts And Synthetic Products Using Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis, Matteo Perini, Silvia Pianezze, Luca Ziller, Federica Camin

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

L-theanine involves a great number of health benefits and dietary supplements containing this molecule are becoming increasingly popular. There is, therefore, a growing need to find ways to discriminate between natural L-theanine extracted from tea leaves and the cheaper, synthetic one obtained using specific bacterial enzymes. A first attempt of stable isotope ratio analysis characterization of the possible synthetic adulterant L-theanine (δ13C of -14.3±1.5‰), obtained from vegetable substrates with C4 photosynthetic cycle, and of the more expensive natural L-theanine (δ13C of -24.4±1.3‰), extracted from Camellia sinensis plants with C3 photosynthetic cycle, is reported here .

Chemometric Authentication Of Pu'er Teas In Terms Of Multielement Stable Isotope Ratios Analysis By Ea-Irms And Icp-Ms, Honglin Liu, Yitao Zeng, Xin Zhao, Huarong Tong Jun 2020

Chemometric Authentication Of Pu'er Teas In Terms Of Multielement Stable Isotope Ratios Analysis By Ea-Irms And Icp-Ms, Honglin Liu, Yitao Zeng, Xin Zhao, Huarong Tong

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

In this work, the stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and mineral elements and their stoichiometric methods were examined as possible factors that could certify Chinese tea based on its production years. A total of 43 multi-element stable isotope ratios of Xiangzhujing Pu'er tea in five production years were determined through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) methods. Two unsupervised learning techniques (principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis) and three supervised learning techniques (partial least squares discriminant analysis [PLS-DA], back-propagation artificial neural network [BP-ANN], and linear discriminant analysis [LDA]) were …

Developing A Diet Authentication System From The Composition Of Meat In Ruminants, F. J. Monahan, A. P. Moloney, O. Schmidt Dec 2019

Developing A Diet Authentication System From The Composition Of Meat In Ruminants, F. J. Monahan, A. P. Moloney, O. Schmidt

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

As consumer interest in the link between diet and human health and in the ethics of food production increases assurances about the background origin of food are sought. In the case of animal-derived foods, such as meat, the animal’s diet is an intrinsic component of the food’s production and of its subsequent nutritional quality. Thus, there is a need to develop ways of validating the authenticity of the animal diet. Among the approaches to authenticate the background diet of ruminants is the measurement of components in meat (muscle and adipose tissue) and other tissues that are directly influenced by the …

A Dynamic Behavioral Biometric Approach To Authenticate Users Employing Their Fingers To Interact With Touchscreen Devices, Arturo Ponce May 2015

A Dynamic Behavioral Biometric Approach To Authenticate Users Employing Their Fingers To Interact With Touchscreen Devices, Arturo Ponce

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The use of mobile devices has extended to all areas of human life and has changed the way people work and socialize. Mobile devices are susceptible to getting lost, stolen, or compromised. Several approaches have been adopted to protect the information stored on these devices. One of these approaches is user authentication. The two most popular methods of user authentication are knowledge based and token based methods but they present different kinds of problems.

Biometric authentication methods have emerged in recent years as a way to deal with these problems. They use an individual’s unique characteristics for identification and have …

Dna-Based Authentication Of Botanicals And Plant-Derived Dietary Supplements: Where Have We Been And Where Are We Going?, Denise F. Coutinho Moraes, David W. Still, Michelle R. Lum, Ann M. Hirsch Apr 2015

Dna-Based Authentication Of Botanicals And Plant-Derived Dietary Supplements: Where Have We Been And Where Are We Going?, Denise F. Coutinho Moraes, David W. Still, Michelle R. Lum, Ann M. Hirsch

Biology Faculty Works

Herbal medicines and botanicals have long been used as sole or additional medical aids worldwide. Currently, billions of dollars are spent on botanicals and related products, but minimal regulation exists regarding their purity, integrity, and efficacy. Cases of adulteration and contamination have led to severe illness and even death in some cases. Identifying the plant material in botanicals and phytomedicines using organoleptic means or through microscopic observation of plant parts is not trivial, and plants are often misidentified. Recently, DNA-based methods have been applied to these products because DNA is not changed by growth conditions unlike the chemical constituents of …

Authenticated Top-K Aggregation In Distributed And Authenticated Top-K Aggregation In Distributed And, Sunoh Choi, Hyo-Sang Lim, Elisa Bertino

Cyber Center Publications

Top-k queries have attracted interest in many different areas like network and system monitoring, information retrieval, sensor networks, and so on. Since today many applications issue top-k queries on distributed and outsourced databases,
authentication of top-k query results becomes more important. This paper addresses the problem of authenticated top-k aggregation queries (e.g. “find the k objects with the highest aggregate values”) in a distributed system. We propose a new algorithm, called Authenticated Three Phase Uniform Threshold (A-TPUT), which provides not only efficient top-k aggregation over distributed databases but also authentication on the top-k results. We also introduce several enhancements for …
