Heroism Science: Frameworks For An Emerging Field, Olivia Efthimiou, Scott T. Allison Dec 2016

Heroism Science: Frameworks For An Emerging Field, Olivia Efthimiou, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

This article outlines the conceptual framework for a new science focused on heroism using multiple perspectives to generate a science that is explicitly in service to humanity. The role of heroism as a case study for deviant interdisciplinarity, heroism science as storytelling and story revising, and its impacts for research and communities are considered. The primary concern of the deviant agenda of heroism science is the unity of knowledge and the testability of narrative-driven scientific inquiry. In this agenda, science as “episteme” and heroism are unified in their core epistemic function. Heroism science is posited as a prime candidate for …

Genomic Plasticity And Rapid Host Switching Can Promote The Evolution Of Generalism: A Case Study In The Zoonotic Pathogen Campylobacter, Dan J. Woodcock, Peter Krusche, Norval J. C. Strachan, Ken J. Forbes, Frederick M. Cohan, Guillaume Meric, Samuel K. Sheppard Dec 2016

Genomic Plasticity And Rapid Host Switching Can Promote The Evolution Of Generalism: A Case Study In The Zoonotic Pathogen Campylobacter, Dan J. Woodcock, Peter Krusche, Norval J. C. Strachan, Ken J. Forbes, Frederick M. Cohan, Guillaume Meric, Samuel K. Sheppard

Frederick M. Cohan

Horizontal gene transfer accelerates bacterial adaptation to novel environments, allowing selection to act on genes that have evolved in multiple genetic backgrounds. This can lead to ecological specialization. However, little is known about how zoonotic bacteria maintain the ability to colonize multiple hosts whilst competing with specialists in the same niche. Here we develop a stochastic evolutionary model and show how genetic transfer of host segregating alleles, distributed as predicted for niche specifying genes, and the opportunity for host transition could interact to promote the emergence of host generalist lineages of the zoonotic bacterium Campylobacter. Using a modelling approach …

Comparing Caenorhabditis Elegans Gentle And Harsh Touch Response Behavior Using A Multiplexed Hydraulic Microfluidic Device, Patrick D. Mcclanahan, Joyce Xu, Christopher Fang-Yen

Christopher Fang-Yen

The roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans is an important model system for understanding the genetics and physiology of touch. Classical assays for C. elegans touch, which involve manually touching the animal with a probe and observing its response, are limited by their low throughput and qualitative nature. We developed a microfluidic device in which several dozen animals are subject to spatially localized mechanical stimuli with variable amplitude. The device contains 64 sinusoidal channels through which worms crawl, and hydraulic valves that deliver touch stimuli to the worms. We used this assay to characterize the behavioral responses to gentle touch stimuli and the …

Food Responsiveness Regulates Episodic Behavioral States In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Richard J. Mccloskey, Anthony D. Fouad, Matthew A. Churgin, Christopher Fang-Yen

Christopher Fang-Yen

Animals optimize sur- vival and reproduction in part through control of behavioral states, which depend on an organism’s internal and external environments. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans a variety of behavioral states have been described, including roaming, dwelling, quiescence, and episodic swimming. These states have been considered in isolation under varied experimental conditions, making it difficult to establish a unified picture of how they are regulated. Using long-term imaging, we examined C. elegans episodic behavioral states under varied mechanical and nutritional environments. We found that animals alternate between high-activity (active) and low-activity (sedentary) episodes in any mechanical environment, while the …

Neurobiology Of The Premonitory Urge In Tourette's Syndrome: Pathophysiology And Treatment Implications, Andrea E. Cavanna, Kevin J. Black, Mark Hallett, Valerie Voon Dec 2016

Neurobiology Of The Premonitory Urge In Tourette's Syndrome: Pathophysiology And Treatment Implications, Andrea E. Cavanna, Kevin J. Black, Mark Hallett, Valerie Voon

Kevin J. Black, MD

Motor and vocal tics are relatively common motor manifestations identified as the core features of Tourette's syndrome (TS). Although traditional descriptions have focused on objective phenomenological observations, such as anatomical location, number and frequency of tics, patients' first-person accounts have consistently reported characteristic subjective correlates. These sensory phenomena are often described as a feeling of mounting inner tension or urge to move ("premonitory urge"), which is transiently relieved by tic expression. This article reviews the existing literature on the clinical and neurobiological aspects of the premonitory urge in patients with TS, with focus on its pathophysiology and possible treatment implications.

Assessing The Diversity And Composition Of Spiders In The Lancer Park Flood Plain, William Kish, Sujan Henkanaththegedra

William Kish

The United States has about 4,000 species of spiders but the eastern United States spider population is relatively unknown. The goals of this research was to try to establish preliminary data on the species of spiders in the Lancer Park flood plain. Through sweep netting and visually observations in the multiple different habitats in Lancer Park during the months of September and October in 2017, 47 specimen were identified into 27 species under 10 families.

Quantification And Impacts Of Nautical Traffic On Hawksbill Presence In A Honduran Marine Protected Area: A Progress Report, Stephen G. Dunbar Dec 2016

Quantification And Impacts Of Nautical Traffic On Hawksbill Presence In A Honduran Marine Protected Area: A Progress Report, Stephen G. Dunbar

Stephen Dunbar, PhD

Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been implemented to help reduce negative impacts of human activities on marine organisms. However, many MPAs overlook specific threats, such as nautical traffic. Boat presence has been shown to alter typical activity patterns, increase stress, and lead to physical injury in marine animals. The Sandy Bay West End Marine Reserve (SBWEMR) was implemented to protect the northwestern shore and marine environments of Roatán, Honduras, and the organisms that inhabit them, including the hawksbill sea turtle. However, there are many dive centers, hotels, and marinas in the SBWEMR, almost all of which generate boat traffic. To …

The Stories Tryptophans Tell: Exploring Protein Dynamics Of Heptosyltransferase I From Escherichia Coli, Erika A. Taylor Dec 2016

The Stories Tryptophans Tell: Exploring Protein Dynamics Of Heptosyltransferase I From Escherichia Coli, Erika A. Taylor

Erika A. Taylor, Ph.D.

Heptosyltransferase I (HepI) catalyzes the addition of L-glycero-β-Dmanno-heptose to Kdo2-Lipid A, as part of the biosynthesis of the core region of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Gram-negative bacteria with gene knockouts of HepI have reduced virulence and enhanced susceptibility to hydrophobic antibiotics, making the design of inhibitors of HepI of interest. Because HepI protein dynamics are partially ratelimiting, disruption of protein dynamics might provide a new strategy for inhibiting HepI. Discerning the global mechanism of HepI is anticipated to aid development of inhibitors of LPS biosynthesis. Herein, dynamic protein rearrangements involved in the HepI catalytic cycle were probed by combining mutagenesis with intrinsic …

Identification And Metabolite Profiling Of Chemical Activators Of Lipid Accumulation In Green Algae, Nishikant Wase, Boqiang Tu, Paul N. Black, Concetta C. Dirusso Dec 2016

Identification And Metabolite Profiling Of Chemical Activators Of Lipid Accumulation In Green Algae, Nishikant Wase, Boqiang Tu, Paul N. Black, Concetta C. Dirusso

Nishikant Wase

Microalgae are proposed as feedstock organisms useful for producing biofuels and coproducts. However, several limitations must be overcome before algae-based production is economically feasible. Among these is the ability to induce lipid accumulation and storage without affecting biomass yield. To overcome this barrier, a chemical genetics approach was employed in which 43,783 compounds were screened against Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and 243 compounds were identified that increase triacylglyceride (TAG) accumulation without terminating growth. Identified compounds were classified by structural similarity, and 15 were selected for secondary analyses addressing impacts on growth fitness, photosynthetic pigments, and total cellular protein and starch concentrations. TAG …

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Individuals with a personality disorder (PD) tend to experience more negative life events (NLEs) than
positive life events (PLEs). In community samples, the Five Factor Model of personality (FFM) predicts
both positive and negative life events. The present research examined whether FFM normal personality
traits were associated with positive and negative life events among individuals with 1 of 4 PDs: avoidant,
borderline, schizotypal, and obsessive– compulsive, and tested whether associations between the FFM of
personality and PLEs and NLEs were similar across the 4 PD groups and a control group. Among
aggregated PDs, neuroticism was positively associated with NLEs, whereas …

Improving The Player's Recruiting Process By Using Scenario Based Analysis Methodology, Dotan I. Shvorin, Kevin M. Taaffe Dec 2016

Improving The Player's Recruiting Process By Using Scenario Based Analysis Methodology, Dotan I. Shvorin, Kevin M. Taaffe

Dr. Dotan Shvorin

High performance physical characteristics can be found today in most of the potential recruits
for any athletic program and it has become increasingly difi#14;cult to select the right candidate
based solely on these characteristics. As a result there is a growing need for a recruiter to evaluate
the decision-making capability of a player in order to understand the mind of the player in
addition to the player physical assessment. We employ scenario-based analysis to evaluate such
decision-making capabilities while enabling any recruiting to customize the potential candidate
evaluation, based on the specific program's needs. The proposed method provides a platform …
