Quantitative Reasoning And Sustainability, Corrine H. Taylor Jul 2012

Quantitative Reasoning And Sustainability, Corrine H. Taylor

Numeracy

Quantitative Reasoning and Sustainability have much in common. Both are complex, nuanced concepts with rather long definitions that have evolved over time. Both subjects are “everybody’s business” on college campuses, and must be approached in courses across the curriculum, not merely in one course on QR or in one course on Sustainability. The growing, wider presence of both QR and Sustainability on college campuses is due to their applicability in individuals’ personal, professional, and public lives. Moreover, QR and Sustainability support and enhance each other in and out of the classroom. Sustainability is an important, authentic, relevant context for lessons …

Surf Lifeguard Perceptions And Practice Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Cpr), Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber Feb 2012

Surf Lifeguard Perceptions And Practice Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Cpr), Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

While the importance of lifeguards in providing immediate and effective basic life support (BLS) in drowning has been well reported, not a lot is known about how lifeguards perceive the relative value of CPR as a lifeguard skill, their training in it, and the likelihood of resuscitation being successful. A self-complete questionnaire was completed by 252 volunteer surf lifeguards at 16 surf beaches in the Greater Auckland,NZ region. Results show that most lifeguards (65%) had received training in the 3 months before the survey, 83% were willing to perform CPR, few (9%) had used CPR in an emergency, and many …

Towards Sustainable Communities And Human Security: Challenges Of The College Of Public Affairs And Development University Of The Philippines Los Baños, Agnes C. Rola, Josefina T. Dizon, Maria Ana T. Quimbo, Wilfredo B. Carada

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

The College of Public Affairs (CPAf) in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) evolved as a unit of the University with the mandate to raise the bar of applied social science scholarship by developing transdisciplinary methods in the resolution of public issues such as food security, land reform and land use, governance, population, and education. The creation of CPAf in 1998 was prompted “by the need to attune academic programs in the pursuit of UP’s mission to promote nationalism and development in the face of profound changes occurring in the global environment.” In 2011, it was renamed as …

Perspectives On The Use Of Grounded Theory In Social Development Studies, Ernesto L. Bumatay Jan 2012

Perspectives On The Use Of Grounded Theory In Social Development Studies, Ernesto L. Bumatay

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

This methodology paper introduces insights and perspectives on Grounded Theory (GT) as a social science research methodology. While GT emanates from the field of education, this paper shows that it can also be potentially used in development studies. The concept of the GT is first explained including the alternative views on its implementation. It has limited application in the Philippine context, and the current application that is cited is based on an education study called “Becoming Gift: A Classic Grounded Theory of Charism in Sectarian Institutions”. The end goal of the paper is to argue for the application of GT …

Lessons In Forging Sustainable Partnerships For Rice Self-Sufficiency In Calabarzon, Mimaropa, And Bicol Regions, Mayo Grace C. Amit, Nelson Jose Vincent B. Querijero

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

In an era of polyvocality and multi-stakeholder partnership, the authors trace the beginnings of an initiative of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and other program partners in addressing food security concern through a devolved agricultural extension service. Building on inter-organizational relations theory and partnership building, UPLB served as a partnership broker among the provincial governments, municipal governments, Department of Agriculture Regional Field Units, the local state universities and colleges, and civil society organizations. The paper documents the beginnings and nuances in brokering partnerships and cites the challenges associated with promoting transdisciplinarity in UPLB known to protect specialized …

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

The necessary body of knowledge and methodology for the comprehensive appreciation and understanding of public affairs for policy decision-making have remained elusive. This paper clarifies the concept of public affairs as an area for building a body of knowledge into a distinct academic science and a valuable discipline for governance. It includes brief reviews of relevant literature on public affairs; a theoretical model of public affairs as a community system; an analytical framework for the science of public affairs; and some concluding insights for building a body of knowledge of a public affairs system.

Development Of A Soil Carbon Index For Iowa Mineral Soils, M. M. Al-Kaisi, T. E. Fenton, J. G. Guzman, B. R. O'Neal Jan 2012

Development Of A Soil Carbon Index For Iowa Mineral Soils, M. M. Al-Kaisi, T. E. Fenton, J. G. Guzman, B. R. O'Neal

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A carbon index (Cl) is one of many soil quality indicators that depends on organic carbon concentration. One of the values of a soil carbon index is in determining the impact of agriculture practices (i.e., tillage, crop rotation, N management, etc.) on soil organic matter status of mineral soils. Interactions of climate, parent material, topography, time, and organisms including human activities influence soil organic carbon (SOC). This study developed a soil carbon index for mineral soil map units in Iowa using data collected by the Iowa Cooperative Soil Survey Laboratory and the USDA Soil Survey Laboratory for over 2,300 soil …

Perspectives: Developing And Defining Both Science And Science Education As Disciplines, Robert E. Yager Jan 2012

Perspectives: Developing And Defining Both Science And Science Education As Disciplines, Robert E. Yager

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The six "domains" have been identified as features for the "doing" of science. These six are: Concept, Process, Creativity, Attitude, Application, and Worldview. They are offered to affect teaching, student learning, as well as a new way of defining science. Concepts and Processes often are the only two typically used to define school and college science content; Creativity and Positive Attitudes are added as two "enabling" domains; a fifth Domain is offered as a focus on the Application of typical concepts and process skills. It is the Domain where and how most people live and operate! The sixth Domain is …
