Biological Analysis Of Prebiotics In Various Processed Food Matrices, Kristina Elise Moore Dec 2011

Biological Analysis Of Prebiotics In Various Processed Food Matrices, Kristina Elise Moore

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The addition of prebiotic to a variety of food products has become a more common occurrence in recent years. Although research on the stability of prebiotics has been conducted, knowledge of the stability of prebiotics in processed foods is limited. The purpose of this research was to determine the biological stability of five prebiotics in a variety of food matrices when processed under various conditions. A biological test, the prebiotic activity assay, was used to test for stability of six food products (muffin, cookie, granola bar, breakfast cereal, sports drink, and bread) containing five different prebiotics (fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin, galactooligosaccharides …

The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma Dec 2011

The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The principle of linearized stability for size-structured population dynamics models is proved giving validity to previous stability results reported in, for example, El-Doma (2008-1). In particular, we show that if all the roots of the characteristic equation lie to the left of the imaginary axis then the steady state is locally exponentially stable, and on the other hand, if there is at least one root that lies to the right of the imaginary axis then the steady state is unstable. We also point out cases when there is resonance

The Dynamics Of Stage Structured Prey-Predator Model Involving Parasitic Infectious Disease, Raid K. Naji, Dina S. Al-Jaf Dec 2011

The Dynamics Of Stage Structured Prey-Predator Model Involving Parasitic Infectious Disease, Raid K. Naji, Dina S. Al-Jaf

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper a prey-predator model involving parasitic infectious disease is proposed and analyzed. It is assumed that the life cycle of predator species is divided into two stages immature and mature. The analysis of local and global stability of all possible subsystems is carried out. The dynamical behaviors of the model system around biologically feasible equilibria are studied. The global dynamics of the model are investigated with the help of Suitable Lyapunov functions. Conditions for which the model persists are established. Finally, to nationalize our analytical results, numerical simulations are worked out for a hypothetical set of parameter values.

Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker Oct 2011

Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker

Journal Articles

Fields studying movement generation, including robotics, psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience utilize concepts and tools related to the pervasiveness of variability in biological systems. The concept of variability and the measures for nonlinear dynamics used to evaluate this concept open new vistas for research in movement dysfunction of many types. This review describes innovations in the exploration of variability and their potential importance in understanding human movement. Far from being a source of error, evidence supports the presence of an optimal state of variability for healthy and functional movement. This variability has a particular organization and is characterized by a …

Complexity, Coordination, And Health: Avoiding Pitfalls And Erroneous Interpretations In Fractal Analyses, Vivien Marmelat, Didier Delignières Jul 2011

Complexity, Coordination, And Health: Avoiding Pitfalls And Erroneous Interpretations In Fractal Analyses, Vivien Marmelat, Didier Delignières

Journal Articles

Background and Objective. The analysis of fractal fluctuation has become very popular because of the close relationships between health, adaptability, and long-range correlations. 1/f noise is considered a “magical” threshold, characterizing optimal functioning, and a decrease or conversely and increase of serial correlations, with respect to 1/f noise, is supposed to sign a kind of disadaptation of the system. Empirical results, however, should be interpreted with caution. In experimental series, serial correlations often present a complex pattern, resulting from the combination of long-range and short-term correlated processes. We show, in the present paper, that an increase in serial correlations …

Stability Analysis And Application Of A Mathematical Cholera Model, Shu Liao, Jim Wang Jul 2011

Stability Analysis And Application Of A Mathematical Cholera Model, Shu Liao, Jim Wang

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we conduct a dynamical analysis of the deterministic cholera model proposed in [9]. We study the stability of both the disease-free and endemic equilibria so as to explore the complex epidemic and endemic dynamics of the disease. We demonstrate a real-world application of this model by investigating the recent cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, we present numerical simulation results to verify the analytical predictions.

Temporal Stability Of A Hybrid Swarm Between The Migratory Marine And Estuarine Fishes Acanthopagrus Australis And A. Butcheri, David G. Roberts, Charles A. Gray, Ronald J. West, David J. Ayre Jan 2011

Temporal Stability Of A Hybrid Swarm Between The Migratory Marine And Estuarine Fishes Acanthopagrus Australis And A. Butcheri, David G. Roberts, Charles A. Gray, Ronald J. West, David J. Ayre

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We predict estuaries to be hotspots of hybridisation between migratory marine and estuary-restricted species, although hybridisation rates may vary in space and time, reflecting the dynamic nature of estuaries and potentially widespread but erratic dispersal of marine taxa. Within estuaries, genotype frequencies may reflect past hybridisation events, with genetically intermediate and backcrossed individuals contributing to persistent hybrid swarms. In southeastern Australia, hybridisation has occurred between estuarine black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri and marine yellowfin bream A. australis, but it is unclear whether this reflects a contemporary process. We recently found that, within lakes and lagoons at the southern range limit of …
