Some Comments On The Breeding Biology Of Pelodytes Caucasicus Boulenger, 1896 (Anura: Pelodytidae) From Uzungöl, Northeast Anatolia, Hüseyi̇n Arikan, Murat Tosunoğlu, Mehmet Kutsay Atatür, Bayram Göçmen

Observations during 2001 and 2002 at Uzungöl Lake (Trabzon), situated within the distribution area of Pelodytes caucasicus in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey, established that the usual breeding season of the species extended from mid July to mid September. Periodic day and night measurements of some ecological characteristics of the lake (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen) were recorded during the breeding season. The first spawning was observed during the night of 22 July 2001. Clutches (egg masses) were laid in the deeper parts of the lake, on submerged vegetation. Understanding how migration, genetic drift, and natural selection interact to maintain the genetic and phenotypic variation we observe in natural populations is a central goal of population genetics. Amphibians provide excellent model organisms for investigating the interplay between these evolutionary forces because amphibians are generally characterized by limited dispersal abilities, high philopatry, and are obligately associated with the areas around suitable habitats (e.g. breeding ponds). A Serological Investigation Of Pelodytes Caucasicus And Pelobates Syriacus (Amphibia, Anura) Populations In Turkey, Murat Tosunoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Arikan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Blood serum proteins of specimens belonging to Pelodytes caucasicus and Pelobates syriacus populations were compared qualitatively and quantitively by means of polyacrylamide disc electrophoresis and densitometry methods. It was determined that the blood serum proteins of both populations demonstrated qualitative and quantitive differences. This result supports the morphological and osteological studies emphasizing the fact that the genus Pelodytes needs to be treated as a separate family (Pelodytidae).

Direct development has evolved in rhaco- phorine frogs independently from other anuran lineages, thereby offering an opportunity to assess features associ- ated with this derived life history. Using a developmen- tal series of the direct-developing Philautus silus (Ranidae: Rhacophorinae) from Sri Lanka, we examine features of cranial morphology that are part of a suite of adaptations that facilitate feeding in free-living tadpoles, but have been changed or lost in other direct-developing lineages. Larval-specific upper jaw cartilages, which are absent from many non-rhacophorine direct-developing species (such as Eleutherodactylus coqui), develop in embryos of P. silus.
