The Flora Of The Northern Part Of The Emirdağ Mountains, Yavuz Bülent Köse, Ati̇la Ocak

This study concerns the flora of the northern part of the Emirdağ nountains. According to Davis's grid system, the research area lies in B3 square. Four hundred and ninety-five taxa belonging to 279 genera and 70 families were found after the identification of 754 plant specimens collected from the research area. Forty-seven taxa are new records for the B3 grid square. The rate of endemism is 15.9%. The distribution of taxa within the phytogeographical regions is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 17.9%, Mediterranean elements 8.8% and Euro-Siberians 5.4%. Seasonal Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Orduzu Dam Lake (Malatya, Turkey), Ahmet Kadri̇ Çeti̇n, Bülent Şen

The species composition and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in Orduzu Dam Lake was studied for a year. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) were most diverse, followed by green algae (Chlorophyta), blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), euglenoids (Euglenophyta) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyta). A total of 117 taxa were recorded and the phytoplankton of the lake contained a large number of detached benthic algae. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by diatoms in all the periods investigated and centric diatoms were the most abundant. A Floristical Study On Poaceae Spp. Growing Naturally In Malatya Province, Turan Arabaci, Bayram Yildiz

This study includes species of Poaceae (Gramineae) growing in Malatya province. According to the grid system used in the Flora of Turkey, the research area is situated in the B6, B7, C6 and C7 squares. Approximately 346 plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study 89 species (101 taxa) belonging to 47 genera were identified. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of Eucalyptus citriodora Hook., Ipomoea carnea Jacq., Cuminum cyminum L., Allium sativum L. and Hyoscyamus muticus L. leaf extracts, and of Streptomyces exfoliatus (Waksman & Curtis) Waksman & Henrici (S) and Trichoderma harzianum Rifai (T) in controlling Botrytis fabae, which causes chocolate spot disease in the faba bean. Laboratory studies supported the use of leaf extracts of E. citriodora (Ex. 1) and I. carnea (Ex. 2) in preference to other extracts for controlling the mycelial growth of B. fabae. This contribution spotlights the present research on the (oreal) subalpine to subnival mountain vegetation of Turkey. It concisely compiles our present knowledge, which is very heterogeneous in geographical terms. The situation is comparatively good in NW and W Anatolia and the western half of the Taurus range, from where a first consolidation stage can be reported. By contrast, the E Taurus remains a largely unexplored area. Some Morphological And Anatomical Investigations On Autumn Species Of Crocus L. Occurring In Şanlıurfa, Hasan Akan, İsmai̇l Eker

Some morphological and anatomical characteristics of Crocus pallasii Goldb. subsp. turcicus B.Mathew and Crocus cancellatus Herbert subsp. damascenus (Herbert) B.Mathew, which flower in autumn, were investigated. Detailed descriptions of these two taxa of Crocus L., which occur in Şanlıurfa, are provided and their morphological characters are compared with those given in the Flora of Turkey. The specimens were collected from different parts of Şanlıurfa within C7 of the grid system; their habitat and population status were also determined. Their anatomical structure are illustrated.

Taxonomical And Ecological Investigations On Some Geophytes Growing Around Denizli Province (Turkey), Ali̇ Çeli̇k, Mehmet Çi̇çek, Gürkan Semi̇z, Mustafa Karincali

In this study, the taxonomical and ecological features of some geophytes which grow naturally around Denizli province have been investigated. From this research, which was performed between 1996 and 2000, 31 species belonging to 8 families have been determined. Thirteen soil parameters from 31 localities were analysed in order to establish plant and soil relations. The ecological spectra of the species are considered, comprising 16 species in macchie and phrygana (50%); 1 species in fields (1%); 7 species in high mountains (23%) and 8 species in forests (26%).

Ambrosia tenuifolia Spreng. (Compositae) is a new addition to the flora of Turkey from Malatya (in the East Anatolia region). The specimens collected from Malatya have different properties from the known diagnostic characteristics of the species. A. tenuifolia is a monoecious plant without glands. Its female capitula are in the axils of the upper leaves in its original description, but some of our specimens have only female capitula (female capitula in terminal racemes and lower parts of the racemes bracteate, but upper parts ebracteate) and there are many glands particularly on the tops of their fruits. Biology Of The Central Desert Of Oman, Shahina A. Ghazanfar

A biological survey of the central desert of Oman was done using long distance transects. Vegetation was sparse and consisted of 200+ plant species, 22 species of mammals, 17 species of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 50 species of birds (migratory and resident). Three main vegetation types were identified based on ground substrate and the dominance of species. These were communities with Acacia Willd., Zygophyllum L., and open woodlands of Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce. Over-grazing and development in the central desert has led to concerns over the conservation of the desert ecosystem in Oman.

This study was based on the macrofungi collected from İzmir province between 1993 and 2002. As a result of field and laboratory studies 55 taxa belonging to 28 families were identified and are presented as a list. Three of these (Geastrum badium Pers., G. fornicatum (Huds.) Hook and Collybia distorta (Fr.) Quél.) are new records for the Turkish macromycota.

Twenty-two Myxomycetes species are new records for Turkey. Protophysaraceae Castillo, Illana & Moreno is a new family record and among these species Collaria arcyrionema (Rost.) Hertel is also a new genus record for the myxobiota of Turkey.

Flora Of The Elmalı Cedar Research Forest (Antalya/Turkey), İsmai̇l Gökhan Deni̇z, Hüseyi̇n Sümbül

The flora of the Elmalı Cedar Research Forest (Antalya) was investigated. From the research area, 1296 samples were collected between September 2000 and September 2002. Of the 1296 samples, 83 represent families, 320 represent genera and 689 represent species that have been identified. The total number of species, subspecies and varieties of taxa was 708. In the analysed samples, 3 species were new to the scientific world. Twenty-eight of the taxa were collected for the first time from square C2. The genus Crataegus L. has approximately 200 species worldwide. However, the number of the species is increased to 1200 species by some taxonomists. Traditionally, the genus is placed in the subfamily Maloideae and it is closely related to the genera Pyracantha M.Roem., Mespilus L. and Hesperomeles Lindl. The latest phylogenetic analysis of the genus shows that it is closest to the genus Osteomeles Lind. Crataegus is divided into 40 sections by various taxonomists. An original database, ASIUM, on Asian Umbelliferae has been compiled at the Moscow State University to include all accepted names and synonyms, principal citations in regional Floras, monographs and critical articles, protologue data and distribution in countries, their regions and provinces. A special option permits the arrangement of synomyms, which can be divided into several homotypic groups. It is also possible to extract information for analysis and comparison, for instance, of species sets from different regions to estimate their similarity. The morphological, anatomical and micromorphological features of Saponaria kotschyi Boiss. have been studied on plants collected from Osmangazi University-Meşelik Campus, Eskişehir. S. kotschyi is an endemic species and a new record from Eskişehir. In general, the results obtained from morphological studies were consistent with the description given in the Flora of Turkey, except for the calyx, as the calyx of S. kotschyi flowers not only had glandular hairs but also eglandular hairs. Analyses were carried out to identify boron (B) hyperaccumulating plant species in an actively B- mined area of Kırka, Eskişehir, Turkey. Only 4 plant species, Gypsophila sphaerocephala Fenzl ex Tchihat. var. sphaerocephala (Caryophyllaceae), Gypsophila perfoliata L. (Caryophyllaceae), Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. subsp. distans (Gramineae) and Elymus elongatus (Host) Runemark subsp. turcicus (McGuire) Melderis (Gramineae), were identified in the highest B- containing sections of the mine. The species were found growing successfully under high total (8900 mg kg^{-1}) and available (277 mg kg^{-1}) soil B concentrations. The floristic characteristics of Beydağı are given and the vascular plant species growing there are documented. Beydağı is situated in the south of Malatya province and is in the Irano-Turanian phytogeographical region. The research was carried out between 1986 and 2000. Two thousand one hundred plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study, 873 vascular plant species (897 taxa, 185 subsp., 112 var.) and 357 genera belonging to 73 families were identified: 140 taxa (16.9%) are endemic to Turkey. T. armena var. lycica, an endemic species which was collected from the Eskişehir, Alpu-Bozan plantation area and from Kunduzlar Dam and its environs. The species is a new record for Eskişehir. The vascular flora of the Karagöl-Sahara National Park and its environs (Şavşat, Artvin, Turkey) was assessed between 1997 and 2002. In the area under review, 872 taxa belonging to 364 genera and 91 families were identified. Of the 872 taxa, 21 Pteridophytes and 851 Spermatophytes were detected. Spermatophytes also contained 7 Gymnospermae and 844 Angiospermae taxa. The richest 3 families are Compositae with 90 taxa (10.2%), Leguminosae with 77 taxa (8.9%) and Gramineae with 60 taxa (7.0%). A Morphological And Anatomical Study On Endemic Alkanna Haussknechtii Bornm. (Boraginaceae), Critically Endangered In Turkey, Öznur Ergen Akçi̇n, Nezahat Kandemi̇r, Arzu Cansaran

Alkanna haussknechtii Bornm., which occurs only in the vicinity of Amasya, is critically endangered. The morphological and anatomical properties of the species, an endemic plant of the Irano-Turanian phytogeographic region, were investigated. The root is perennial. The leaves are ecvifacial and have stomata cells that are anisocytic and anomocytic. The stomata index is 18.048 on the upper epidermis and 15.428 on the lower epidermis.
