Biological characteristics such as sex, age and length compositions, growth, condition factor, reproduction, mortality and exploitation rates of the silver crucian carp, Carassius gibelio (Bloch 1782), population in Lake Eğirdir were investigated between March 2001 and February 2002. According to the 616 specimens ranged in age groups from I to VI, the percentages of male and female individuals in the population were 53.4% and 46.6%, respectively. The fork lengths of the samples ranged from 9 to 33 cm. Allometric growth was also determined among the lengths and weights of both sexes. Incremental growth rates in length and weight for both …

Histological, Histochemical And Ultrastructural Investigations On The Esophagus Of Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Fati̇me Geyi̇koğlu, Özgen Vuraler, Aysel Temelli̇

The histology of the esophagus of Oncorhynchus mykiss was studied. The structure of the esophagus exhibited differences as well as similarities when compared with previous studies. In this study, the histochemical and ultrastructural structure of the tunica muscularis externa in the esophagus of this fish is investigated. The muscle fibers are described as red and intermediate fibers according to the pH stability of their mATPase activities. The red fibers showed intense staining, while intermediate fibers showed moderate staining with succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and toluidine blue. In addition, small diameter fibres were seen. Phorbia securis Tiensuu, 1935 (Diptera, Anthomyiidae) is a new pest found in the cereal areas of the Thrace region in Turkey. In this paper, its morphology, short biology, hosts and distribution in Turkey are presented.

In this research, which was carried out between August 1995 and July 1997 in an area that embraces Lakes Mogan and Eymir, Imrahor Valley and the Gölbaşı district of Ankara province, the seasonal larval and adult population dynamics, breeding habitat diversity and hibernation type of Culex theileri were studied and it was determined that 7 different habitat categories, such as marshes, lake shores, creek sides, pastures and animal footprints, can be breeding habitats for Cx. theileri and that it can be associated with 7 different mosquito species in these habitats. The purpose of this study was to isolate Pasteurella spp and other aerobic bacterial agents from the lungs of sheep and goats with pneumonia and to identify Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica by both culture methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, mouse pathogenecity tests were carried out on suspected P. multocida isolates. In the examination of lung samples collected from sheep, 15 (4.3%) P. multocida and 8 (2.3%) M. haemolytica strains were isolated and identified. This study concerns the flora of the northern part of the Emirdağ nountains. According to Davis's grid system, the research area lies in B3 square. Four hundred and ninety-five taxa belonging to 279 genera and 70 families were found after the identification of 754 plant specimens collected from the research area. Forty-seven taxa are new records for the B3 grid square. The rate of endemism is 15.9%. The distribution of taxa within the phytogeographical regions is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 17.9%, Mediterranean elements 8.8% and Euro-Siberians 5.4%. Male and female specimens of Brachypoda mutila and male specimens of Bandakia concreta collected from a seepage spring in West Anatolia are described. Their morphological features are compared with those of the most closely related species. Identification keys to the species known from the Palearctic of the genera Bandakia and Brachypoda are provided.

The birds of Dicle Dam, which is located 50 km north-east of Diyarbakır city centre, were studied between February 2000 and February 2002. During the observation period 116 bird species that belong to 15 orders and 38 families were determined and listed. Among these species defined, 44 of them certainly and 26 presumably breed in the area, while 46 of them are transitory migrating or wintering birds for the region. Three species are globally under threat. The determination of bird species will help in the evaluation and comparison of possible changes regarding the bird fauna in the future.

Crustacean Diversity Among The Cystoseira Facies Of The Aegean Coast Of Turkey, Ahmet Kocataş, Tuncer Katağan, Murat Sezgi̇n, Fevzi̇ Kirkim, Cengi̇z Koçak

This study focused on the crustacean fauna of Cystoseira facies in the upper infralittoral zone of the Turkish Aegean coast. Investigations were carried out at 9 stations along a depth gradient of 2 to 5 m in June and July 1995. A total of 2179 specimens belonging to 81 species were identified. Among the species encountered, Ampithoe ramondi was the most common, with a dominance value of 11%, followed by Leptochelia savignyi (7%). Caprella rapax is recorded for the first time from the Aegean coast of Turkey; Corophium acutum, Corophium rotundirostre and Hippolyte varians are new records for the entire …

Edible species and their distribution in Turkey were studied. The absence of Helix pomatia, a species reported to occur in Turkey in resources in various disciplines, is mentioned, while 7 species of edible snails determined (Theba pisana, Eobania vermiculata, Cryptomphalus aspersus, Cantareus apertus, Helix asemnis, Helix cincta and Helix lucorum) are described in detail by means of morphology, distribution, systematical positions, and a key to the species is given. Additionally, problems about the future of snail harvesting in Turkey and standards to be applied are discussed.

The present work was undertaken to study the histopathological changes in the intestine of male rat Nesokia indica. Histopathological sections of infected intestine were prepared by fixing small pieces of intestine in buffer formalin for 24 h. The fixed material was washed with 70% alcohol and dehydrated and cleared for paraffin block making by the usual procedure. Sections of 5 to 7 µ thickness were used for the present study. The effect of propolis on the growth of Lactobacillus casei RSKK 591, Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10449 and Streptococcus sobrinus DSN sobrinus 20742 was investigated in vitro. Bursa propolis had the most inhibitory effect on S. sobrinus. The effect of Bursa propolis on rats inoculated with S. sobrinus was also studied. In rats inoculated with the bacteria and given propolis, the severity of sulcal enamel and superficial dentine lesions was significantly less than that in the control group, but colony forming unit numbers and the caries scores in other levels were not different. The subfamily Tenthredininae in the family Tenthredinidae was treated in this part of the study regarding the sawfly (Symphyta, Hymenoptera) fauna of Turkey. The materials were collected from various localities around the country, though examples from eastern Turkey are predominant. After examining more than 2500 specimens, 57 species in 8 genera were recorded. Eleven species were new for Turkish fauna; of these 3 species were recorded for the first time as Asian fauna. In order to determine the Malacostraca fauna of water bodies in the Taurus Mountains, southern Anatolia, 2 field studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997. As a result, Asellus aquaticus (L. 1758), Gammarus balcanicus Schäferna 1922, Gammarus longipedis G.S. Karaman & Pinkster 1987 and Stygobromus ambulans (F. Müller 1846) were determined from the investigated area. All the determined taxa are recorded for the first time from these localities.

The Gastropoda species and its distribution was investigated in Lake Eğirdir. It was determined that 5 species belonging to Gastropoda, order Prosobranchia (Theodoxus heldreichi, Valvata naticina, Graecoanatolica lacustristurca, Falsipyrgula pfeiferi and Bithynia pseudemmericia) and 7 species belonging to the order Pulmonata (Radix peregra, Stagnicola palustris, Physa fontinalis, Physa acuta, Planorbis planorbis, Planorbis carinatus and Gyraulus albus) were present. Turkey has 22,000 ha of greenhouse area, and about 51% of vegetable greenhouses are used for tomato production. In Mediterranean countries generally greenhouses are not regularly heated at optimal levels. Fruity vegetables in winter have a problem of insufficient pollination due to low temperatures and isolated atmosphere. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) pollination in tomato production in anti-frost heated greenhouses in the Mediterranean basin. Determination Of Sowing Dates Of Sweet Corn (Zea Mays L. Saccharata Sturt.) Under Şanlıurfa Conditions, Abdullah Öktem, A. Gülgün Öktem, Yalçin Coşkun

This study was conducted to determine optimum sowing dates for sweet corn in the Southeastern Anatolia region. The research was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station of Harran University in Şanlıurfa during 2000 and 2001. Sowing dates were April 25, May 10, May 25, June 10, June 25, July 10, July 25 and August 10. Based on the sowing dates, fresh ear yield, duration of tasseling, ear diameter, kernel numbers per ear, single fresh ear weight and husk ratio parameters were statistically significant (**P < 0.01) in both years. The highest fresh ear yields were 177.51 and 172.30 kg ha^{-1} for the 25 July sowing date in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The lowest fresh ear yields were 18.24 and 15.53 kg ha^{-1} for the April 25 sowing date in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Fresh ear yield decreased with early sowing dates (from April 25 to June 25) in both years. The results indicate that optimal sowing dates for sweet corn could be from June 25 to July 25 in Şanlıurfa and similar Southeastern Anatolia regions.

Furrow infiltration varies with different variables and is a complex process for modeling infiltration over the field. This research was conducted to develop empirical relationships between field-wide furrow infiltration and independent variables such as the opportunity time, initial soil water content, flow depth, flow section area, wetted perimeter and wet bulk density. This paper presents a prediction model developed using dimensional analysis for friction losses in drip irrigation laterals. Drip irrigation laterals with cylindrical type in-line emitters placed at different spacings ranging from 0.2 to 1 m were considered. The parameters affecting the variation in friction losses in laterals were defined as dimensionless terms using Buckingham's pi theorem. In order to develop a model, experimental friction loss data from 14 different drip irrigation pipes, and some domestic and some imported ones with the above-mentioned spacings were used. Sugar beet is an important crop in terms of production value and represents 2.5% of the total value of crop production. Its production has been regulated and supported by the government. To adapt Turkey's sugar policies for potential admission to the EU, a sugar production quota policy was implemented in 1999 in addition to existing policies, mainly including price support and input subsidies. In this work, a number of handsheets made from unbeaten and unbleached kraft, refiner mechanical and cotton linter pulps and crack propagations on paper samples under monotonic loading, were analyzed and possible links with the properties of fibrous networks were investigated. Crack initiation and propagation on the tested paper strips were also investigated under a scanning electron microscope to determine visually the state of the paper matrix under applied loads. A risk-programming model was developed to evaluate the tradeoffs between risk and expected returns for farms along the Kızılırmak River in North Central Anatolia. Risk efficient farm structures were derived for representative farms by using minimization of the absolute deviation procedures, which permit the estimation of a farm's risk-return frontier. Research results reveal that farm plans are sensitive to the risk criteria in the research area. Rice and maize are the most high-risk activities, followed by lettuce and soybean. Wheat, sugar beet and dairy activities have a more stabilizing effect on farm income compared to others. Medium size and large …

The effect of moisture content and wood density on the preservative uptake (on the basis of the percentage of void volume filled (VVF%)) of Caucasian fir (Abies nordmanniana (Link.) Spach.) was studied in various levels of moisture content (MC). VVF% was measured in 11 MC regimes (7 of which were designed to be below the fibre saturation point (FSP)) consequtively nominated using a conventional kiln. With its historical remains and beautiful travertine formations, Ilgarini cave is important in terms of archaeobotany and natural sciences. In the left part of the cave there are 2 temples and 11 graves. These graves had 3 floors, and wooden materials were used between them. The purpose of the study was to identify the wooden materials taken from the graves in Ilgarini cave and to determine the lifetime of the people who lived in the cave by dating them dendrochronologically. The present work evaluates the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of clary sage (CS) Salvia sclarea L. Antimicrobial, total antioxidant, DPPH radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, hydrogen peroxide scavenging and metal chelating activities, reducing power, and total contents of phenolic compounds of dried herb samples extracted with chloroform and acetone were studied. The chloroform extract had stronger total antioxidant activity than the acetone extract and exhibited 93 and 68% inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation, respectively. a-Tocopherol, quercetin, butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene were used as standard antioxidants.
