Electromyographic Analysis Of Abdominal Muscle Activity Using Portable Abdominal Exercise Devices And A Traditional Crunch, Stuart Rugg Jul 2003

Electromyographic Analysis Of Abdominal Muscle Activity Using Portable Abdominal Exercise Devices And A Traditional Crunch, Stuart Rugg

Stuart Rugg

The purpose of this study was to compare the abdominal muscle activity elicited while using 4 portable abdominal training devices vs. a traditional crunch. Thirty-three adults participated in this study. The exercise devices tested included the Ab Roller Plus, Torso Track 2, AB-DOer Pro, and the Perfect Abs. All subjects were tested on the Perfect Abs in both a seated and supine position using low-, medium-, and high-resistance bands. The Torso Track 2 was also tested at low- and high-resistance settings. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the upper and lower portions of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and the …

Plasmepsin 4, The Food Vacuole Aspartic Proteinase Found In All Plasmodium Spp. Infecting Man, John B. Dame, Charles A. Yowell, Levi Omara-Opyene, Jane M. Carlton, Roland A. Cooper, Tang Li Jul 2003

Plasmepsin 4, The Food Vacuole Aspartic Proteinase Found In All Plasmodium Spp. Infecting Man, John B. Dame, Charles A. Yowell, Levi Omara-Opyene, Jane M. Carlton, Roland A. Cooper, Tang Li

Roland A. Cooper

Plasmepsins are aspartic proteinases of the malaria parasite, and seven groups of plasmepsins have been identified by comparing genomic sequence data available for the genes encoding these enzymes from Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium knowlesi, Plasmodium berghei, and Plasmodium yoelii. The food vacuole plasmepsins typified by plasmepsin 4 from P. falciparum (PfPM4) constitute one of these groups. Genes encoding the ortholog of PfPM4 have been cloned from Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and P. vivax. In addition, P. falciparum contains three paralagous food vacuole plasmepsins or plasmepsin-like enzymes that appear to have arisen by gene duplication, plasmepsins 1 (PfPM1), 2 (PfPM2) …

Assessing Brain Activity Using Spatial Bayesian Variable Selection, Michael Smith, B Putz, D Auer, Ludwig Fahrmeir Dec 2002

Assessing Brain Activity Using Spatial Bayesian Variable Selection, Michael Smith, B Putz, D Auer, Ludwig Fahrmeir

Michael Stanley Smith

Statistical parametric mapping (SPM), relying on the general linear model and classical hypothesis testing, is a benchmark tool for assessing human brain activity using data from fMRI experiments. Friston et al. (Neuroimage 16 (2002a), 484) discuss some limitations of this frequentist approach and point out promising Bayesian perspectives. In particular, a Bayesian formulation allows explicit modeling and estimation of activation probabilities. In this study, we directly address this issue and develop a new regression based approach using spatial Bayesian variable selection. Our method has several advantages. First, spatial correlation is directly modeled for activation probabilities and indirectly for activation amplitudes. …

Developmental Constraint In Spermtail Evolution, Mark Nielsen

Mark G. Nielsen

Nielsen, M. G. (Principal), "Developmental Constraint in Spermtail Evolution," National Science Foundation MCB-0316359, $170,000.00 (2003 - 2007). We determined that the mode and tempo of insect tubulin evolution is dictated by the rate of production of heritable variants, not competition among tubulin alleles.

A New Species Of Phrynopus (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae) From The Puna Of Maraypata (Departamento De Huánuco, Peru), Edgar Lehr, Cesar Aguilar Dec 2002

A New Species Of Phrynopus (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae) From The Puna Of Maraypata (Departamento De Huánuco, Peru), Edgar Lehr, Cesar Aguilar

Edgar Lehr

A new medium-sized species of leptodactylid frog, genus Phrynopus is described from the puna of the eastern Andean slopes of central Peru (Departamento de Huanuco, 3 770m above sea level). The new species differs from all described species of the genus by having a pale brownish orange dorsal coloration, and a pale cream to orange ventral coloration. The new species lacks ear and vomerine teeth, and is most similar to P barthlenae with which it occurs sympatrically. Males of the new species are unknown.

A Primer On Agricultural Communications For Student, Librarians And Researchers, Joseph Zumalt Dec 2002

A Primer On Agricultural Communications For Student, Librarians And Researchers, Joseph Zumalt

Joseph R. Zumalt

The article focuses on a primer on agricultural communications for student, librarians and researchers. Universities, libraries and librarians have served as partners to assist working professionals in all fields in agriculture. Universities have helped educate agriculture professionals. Universities have helped to create new knowledge. Libraries, especially at land grant institutions, have played a crucial role in disseminating this new knowledge and, increasingly, are seen as the logical place for archival activities, given the public nature of much of this knowledge. Universities and libraries have specifically played an important part in agricultural communications. While demographic changes in Western society, a switch …

Why Model Landscapes At The Level Of Households And Fields?, Jerome K. Vanclay Dec 2002

Why Model Landscapes At The Level Of Households And Fields?, Jerome K. Vanclay

Professor Jerome K Vanclay

Sustainable resource management relies upon many disciplines and deals with complex interactions at the landscape scale. Many of the issues at the landscape scale arise from decisions taken at the household level and affect land use in fields and in small patches of forest. Spatially-explicit modelling of these units is desirable because it enables rigorous testing of model predictions, and thus of underlying propositions. The greatest insights may be obtained by participatory modelling of these processes as we understand them. Despite this, few models simulate dynamics at the household and field level. FLORES, the Forest Land Oriented Resource Envisioning System, …
