Faunistic Studies On The Species Pachybrachis Chevrolat And Cryptocephalus Geoffroy (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cryptocephalinae) Of Dedegöl Mountains (Isparta), Ali̇ Gök

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The material of the subfamily Cryptocephalinae collected from Dedegöl Mountains (Isparta) between 1996 and 1998 consisted of 21 species belonging to the genera Pachybrachis and Cryptocephalus. A diagnostic key and distribution records for the species are presented. The species except for Cryptocephalus bipunctatus (L.), C. turcicus Suffrian, C. connexus Olivier, Pachybrachis limbatus (Menetries), P. fimbriolatus (Suffrian) and P. tessellatus orientalis Weise are new for Isparta.

The Ephemeroptera (Insecta) Fauna Of Lake Ulubat Basin, Mustafa Tanatmiş

In this study, 1812 Ephemeroptera nymphs were collected in order to determine the Ephemeroptera fauna of Lake Ulubat Basin between April 1996 and September 1999. The distribution of 38 species belonging to 22 genera and 10 families is presented. Among these, the genus Brachycercus Curtis, 1834 and the species Brachycercus harrisella Curtis, 1834 are recorded in Turkey for the first time. In addition, previous records on the distribution of all 38 species in Turkey are given.

This study was carried out to investigate the species of the subfamily Tryphoninae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in Turkish Thrace between 1992 and 1994. A total of 89 samples were collected from 42 localities and 26 species belonging to 11 genera were determined. Diagnostic keys to the species, subgenera and genera were prepared. In order to distinguish morphological characters that were mentioned in the keys, 31 original figures are given. The effects of Malathion, Cyfluthrin, and DDT were observed on the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in susceptible and resistant strains of culicine mosquitoes. Biochemical estimation (colorimetry) revealed a remarkable increase in the enzyme activity in Culex fatigans (L.Y. strain). In contrast, in Culex fatigans (G.I. strain) and Culex fatigans (K.U strain), inhibition of enzyme activity was found after treatment with pesticides.

Effects Of Some Antimicrobial Agents On The Total Protein Content Of The Endoparasitoid Pimpla Turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Kemal Büyükgüzel

The effects of thirteen antimicrobial agents that have different structures and modes of action on the total protein content of pupae of the hymenopterous endoparasitoid, Pimpla turionellae L., were investigated by rearing the larvae aseptically on chemically defined synthetic diets. These effects varied according to the their kind and dietary levels. The protein content of the pupae was significantly increased by penicillin, streptomycin, rifampicin, tetracycline hydrochloride, lincomycin hydrochloride, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, cycloheximide and sodium benzoate, while it was decreased by nystatin. The effects of novobiocin, nalidixic and oxolinic acids, which are potent antibacterial agents, on the survival and development of the hymenopterous endoparasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. were investigated alone by rearing the larvae aseptically on chemically defined synthetic diets. The percentage of fifth instar larvae was not significantly affected by the diets with different levels of the antibiotics used in the study. A diet containing the lowest level of novobiocin significantly increased the yields of pupae and adults. Evaluation Of Methiocarb 50%-Wp As A Taste Repellent Against The House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus L.), Syed Waqar Ali̇ Ri̇zvi̇, Amjad Pervez, Syed Muzaffar Ahmed

Laboratory studies in cages and outdoor aviaries were conducted, using different concentrations of methiocarb 50%-WP to estimate the ideal dose needed to produce taste aversion in the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). Under a nochoice test, sparrows showed a clear difference in millet bait preference among various concentrations. Under choice tests, in cages and outdoor aviaries a clear repellency trend was recorded in both sexes with increases in poison concentration. However, female birds showed a higher repellency pattern than males. It was concluded that methiocarb grain bait at 0.1% proved to be highly effective in repelling sparrows and may function as …

Behavioural Abnormalities Of Cyprinion Watsoni On Exposure To Copper And Zinc, Syed Lal Shah

Cyprinion watsoni were exposed to three treatments of copper (0.03, 0.06, 0.12 mg/L) and three treatments of zinc (0.5, 3.0, 7.0 mg/L) for a period of one week to allow behavioural changes to be observed. None of the treatments caused mortality. Treatment with 0.03 mg Cu/L caused little change in fish behaviour; however, 0.06 mg Cu/L caused increased swimming activity and breathing movements. The highest treatment of copper (0.12 mg Cu/L) caused lethargy and loss of equilibrium in C. watsoni. In this study, the detection of mutagenic-carcinogenic pollutants in water by using cytogenetic methods in fish was examined along with the necessity of sister chromatid exchange (SCE), anaphase aberrations (AA) and micronucleus (MN) tests for chemical analysis in aquatic systems. A Preliminary Study On The Population Dynamics Parameters Of Whiting (Merlangius Merlangus Euxinus) In Turkish Black Sea Coastal Waters, Ali̇ İşmen

Some population parameters of the whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) distributed along the Turkish Black Sea coast, were determined by using age-length data. The mean annual growth rate in length was found to be 3.7 cm. The maximum age group was determined as IX for females and VI for males. The seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth parameters in length were estimated to be L_o=39.1 cm, K = 0.15 year^{-1}, t_o = -1.53 year, C=0.23, t_s=0.48. The blood serum proteins of Meriones meridianus, Meriones crassus, Meriones persicus and Meriones tristrami, all found in Turkey, along with domestic Meriones unguiculatus, which originated in Mongolia, were examined for the first time by SDS-PAGE. In the globulin zone, seven to ten bands were identified, one band in the post-albumin and albumin zones and one or two bands in the pre-albumin zone of five species of the genus Meriones. There was no diagnostic difference in the pattern of serum protein bands between species.

Five species were identified as new for the Turkish potamofauna of Edirne and Tekirdağ provinces from Thrace region between August 1995 and August 1996 in this study. They are Corynoneura scutellata Thienemann, 1944 (in Ergene River), Beckidia zabolotzkii (Goetghebuer, 1938) (in Meriç River), Robackia demeijerei (Kruseman, 1933) (in Meriç River and Sazlıdere Stream), Parachironomus arcuatus Goetghebuer 1919 (in Meriç River and Ergene River) and Parachironomus longiforceps Kruseman, 1933 (in Meriç River).

Topotypes of Microtus guentheri were compared with specimens of the genus Microtus with 2n=54 chromosomes from western Anatolia. According to morphological and biometrical comparisons, it was determined that M. guentheri is a different species from Microtus lydius. The dorsal colour and the shape of the baculum distinguish M. guentheri from M. lydius morphologically. In this study, 4.3 µg/g cimetidine and 17 µg/g ranitidine were orally given to mice for two months. The effects of cimetidine and ranitidine on kidney cortical tissue were examined at light microscopical level. In both groups, it was detected that the tubules were separated by their lumen containing darkly stained remnant material. Vacuolization, destruction of apical membrane and decreased PAS positive reaction were observed in the apical membrane of proximal tubule epithelial cells. Muscle fiber types of the tunica muscularis externa of the upper part of the sparrow esophagus were characterised by the method of myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase). Muscle fibers were described as type II and type III. Muscle fiber types were histochemically different from those of the esophagus of broiler ross. It is thought that this difference should be evaluated according to the functional difference between the esophagus of domestic and wild bird species.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of temperature on the development, sexual maturation time, food consumption and body weight of S. gregaria, Forsk., at 25 and 30ºC. The insects were fed on fresh wheat sprouts (FWS) and bran (B). When the temperature was increased, both developmental time and attainment time to sexual maturation were shortened. Total nymphal developmental time at 25 and 30ºC was 32 and 22 days, respectively. Similarly, the average attainment time to sexual maturity was 33 days at 30ºC, whereas it was 52 days at 25ºC. The effects of some antibiotics and antifungal agents in combination on the total protein content of young pupae of the hymenopterous endoparasitoid, Pimpla turionellae L., were investigated by rearing the larvae aseptically on chemically defined synthetic diets. These effects varied with the kinds and levels of the combination of antimicrobial agents in the diets. The combinations of antibiotics generally increased the total protein content according to their individual levels in the diets. The present paper is based on the larval development of a spider crab Menaethiops nodulosus (Nobili, 1905) reared in the laboratory. The genus Menaethiops is represented by twelve species from Indo-Pacific regions including M. bicornis Alcock, 1895. Later two more species M. gadaniensis Kazmi & Tirmizi and M. nodulosus (Nobili) were added to the marine fauna of Pakistan. The production properties of Capoeta tinca, the dominant fish population in a naturally contaminated stream in the Kızılırmak Basin, were studied together with the physical and chemical characteristics of the waters and evaluated in order to assess the impact of the high natural salinity on the fish population. In this study, we analyzed the relative importance of food items of Chondrostoma regium Heckel, 1843. A total of 145 individuals were sampled between April 1993 and March 1994 in Suat Uğurlu Dam Lake. Stomach content analysis was used to determine dietary composition. Relative measures of food item quantity were estimated by two different approaches: the Index of Relative Importance (IRI) and the Geometric Index of Importance (GII). A new trematode genus Astioglossimetra n. gen. has been erected to accommodate an undescribed species A. karachiensis n. gen., n. sp., from Chelonia mydas of the Karachi coast. The genus name refers to its relation to the genera Astiotrema Looss and Glossimetra Mehra of the family Plagiorchiidae and subfamily Astiotrematinae.

Three New Rhizopulvinaria Species (Homoptera: Coccoidea: Coccidae) For Scale Insect Fauna Of Turkey, Mehmet Bora Kaydan, Ferenc Kozar, Bülent Yaşar

Three Rhizopulvinaria species, Rhizopulvinaria pyrethri Borchsenius, Rhizopulvinaria turkestanica (Archangelskaya), and Rhizopulvinaria viridis Borchsenius, were identified on wild flora in eastern Anatolia in 1997. All of them are new records for the Turkish scale insect fauna.
