Identifying The Developmental Stages Of Preserved Eggs Of Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, From Shark Bay, Western Australia, Jeffrey V. Norriss, Gary Jackson

The characteristics used to identify 19 developmental stages of preserved eggs of snapper, Pagrus auratus, collected from Shark Bay, Western Australia, during annual plankton surveys, are described and illustrated. A key is provided to enable the age of each egg stage to be estimated based on sea surface temperature and salinity observed during sampling. This report is intended as a reference for inexperienced staff, to ensure that between-year comparisons of snapper spawning biomass, estimated using the daily egg production method, are based on consistent egg staging and ageing methods.

The Government recognises that the mackerel fishery is important to both the recreational and commercial fishing sectors. However, the purpose of these arrangements is not to allocate the mackerel resource between the sectors but within the commercial sector. Resources sharing issues are subject to investigation in the Integrated Fisheries Management Review where alternative management frameworks and principles for allocating fish stocks to ensure maximum benefit to the community are examined.

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Medfly) is thought to originate from tropical Africa. It is a pest in many areas of the world including Western Australia. It was first detected at Claremont in 1895 and is now found as far south as Esperance and as far north as Derby. The main area of infestation extends from Carnarvon to Bunbury.

These pasture condition guides are relevant to about 192 000 square kilometres of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The rangeland of the Pilbara can be separated into 12 very broad pasture types. The ‘pasture type’ is not strictly a botanical classification because, in determining such a class of pastoral lands, the perennial plant species that contribute to stock production have an over-riding importance. Even so, each pasture type represents a broad group of similar vegetation associations or ‘site types’ which will have similar management requirements for pastoralism. Agriculture has been and will continue to be a major component of economic activity in several regions in Western Australia, and agricultural communities will remain an important part of the social fabric and landscape of the State. Promoting the sustainability of agriculture is likely to produce three main outcomes: vibrant rural communities; profitable agricultural systems; and conservation of the natural environment. This paper describes briefly the main challenges to the sustainability of agriculture and outlines some means of responding to the challenges: market-based approaches; agricultural and environmental research and development; accelerated adjustment; and global and national policy initiatives.

This synopsis presents a review of the literature and research to April 2001on the biology of black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri (Sparidae), particularly in relation to Western Australian populations. A. butcheri is a commercially and recreationally important species, and is endemic to the coastal lakes, estuaries, river systems and sheltered coastal waters of southern Australia, including Tasmania. Separate stocks reside within each river/estuarine system in southwestern Australia, and there is considerable variation in feeding, growth rates and age at maturity among stocks. This report identifies the major soil types within the Lake Magenta Catchment and provides soil physical and chemical data relevant to catchment hydrology and land use. The catchment contains part of the Lake Magenta Nature Reserve and four adjoining farms that together have a total area of 9940 hectares. The head of the catchment is situated on a major drainage divide associated with the Fitzgerald and Gardiner River drainage systems.
