Yuccas (Agavaceae) Of The International Four Corners: Southwestern Usa And Northwestern Mexico, Lee W. Lenz, Michael A. Hanson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Yuccas (Yucca, Agavaceae) are an easily recognizable constituent of the vegetation of the International Four Corners; an area made up of portions of Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora and Chihuahua. We recognize three species as native to the region, Yucca baccata, Y. elata and Y. madrensis, together with interspecific hybrids, and document for the first time naturally occurring intersectional hybridization between baccate-fruited (sect. Yucca) and capsular-fruited (sect. Chaenocarpa) species. We examine the reproductive barriers to hybridization operating within the genus, i.e., spatial, temporal and ethological, and we consider circumstances that may have been responsible for the production and …

Autophagomyces, Bordea, And A New Genus, Rossiomyces, (Laboulbeniales), Richard K. Benjamin

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

A revision of Autophagomyces (Laboulbeniales) was made based on a comparative morphological study of new collections and 16 species included in the genus by Thaxter in the final volume of his monograph published in 1931 and by others more recently. The concept of Autophagomyces (species on Anthicidae, Phalacridae, and Scapidiidae [Coleoptera]) was narrowed and comprises 12 species, four of them new, i.e., A. hammondii, A. mexicanus, A. protuberans, and A. ramosus. The genus Bordea (species on Pselaphinae, Staphylinidae [Coleopteraj), which had been included in Autophagomyces by Thaxter, was reinstated and comprises 14 species, seven new, i.e., …

The South American Neritic Copepod Ctenocalanus Heronae Vega-Pérez And Bowman (Calanoida) In The Gulf Of Mexico, With Comments On The Taxonomy Of The Genus, E. Suarez-Morales, A. Leon-Oropeza Jan 2000

The South American Neritic Copepod Ctenocalanus Heronae Vega-Pérez And Bowman (Calanoida) In The Gulf Of Mexico, With Comments On The Taxonomy Of The Genus, E. Suarez-Morales, A. Leon-Oropeza

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A single adult female specimen of the calanoid copepod Ctenocalanus heronaeVega-Pérez and Bowman was collected during a zooplankton survey carried out in February 1997 in Campeche Sound, the central-southeastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico. The taxonomy of the genus Ctenocalanus Giesbrecht is still unclear. Characters used to separate the species have been considered rather subtle. In this paper the taxonomic illustrations of the specimen collected are accompanied by a revision of the taxonomic features commonly used to identify the species. New, previously overlooked characters such as the cephalosome/urosome ratio, the shape of the 5th legs and particularly the …

Molecular Phylogeny Of Clade Iii Nematodes Reveals Multiple Origins Of Tissue Parasitism, Steven A. Nadler, R. A. Carreno, H. Mejía-Madrid, J. Ullberg, C. Pagan, R. Houston, Jean-Pierre Hugot

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Molecular phylogenetic analyses of 113 taxa representing Ascaridida, Rhigonematida, Spirurida and Oxyurida were used to infer a more comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis for representatives of ‘clade III’. The posterior probability of multiple alignment sites was used to exclude or weight characters, yielding datasets that were analysed using maximum parsimony, likelihood, and Bayesian inference methods. Phylogenetic results were robust to differences among inference methods for most high-level taxonomic groups, but some clades were sensitive to treatments of characters reflecting differences in alignment ambiguity. Taxa representing Camallanoidea, Oxyurida, Physalopteroidea, Raphidascarididae, and Skrjabillanidae were monophyletic in all 9 analyses whereas Ascaridida, Ascarididae, Anisakidae, Cosmocercoidea, …

Lessepsian Fishes Spreading Along The Coasts Of The Mediterranean And The Southern Aegean Sea Of Turkey, Hati̇ce Torcu, Savaş Mater

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The taxonomy and biological characters of 22 Lessepsian fishes living on the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea were examined and 8 species were determined to have commercial importance. Of these, Upeneus moluccensis and Saurida undosquamis have become economic fishes of the Eastern Mediterranean trawl fisheries, having significant stocks. The species previously misidentified as Upeneus asymmetricus was determined to be Upeneus pori. It has been pointed out that new species can be added to the recorded ones by the consequent influx of Red Sea biota into the Levant.
