Coastal plumes of low salinity water that extend hundreds of kilometers offshore into oligotrophic waters are often found in the Gulf of Mexico. To characterize one such feature, a series of photoautotrophic activity and biomass parameters were measured at 2 stations in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, including pigments by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), autotrophic picoplankton abundance by flow cytometry, photoautotrophic 14C-HCO3- fixation, and Ribulose-1,5-diphosphate carboxylase large subunit gene (rbcL) transcriptional activity. One sampling site (Stn 4) was in a 15 m deep, low salinity (29.8 ppt) plume 242 km west of Tampa Bay. …

Responses Of Phytoplankton And Pfiesteria-Like Dinoflagellate Zoospores To Nutrient Enrichment In The Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, Usa, James L. Pinckney, Hans W. Paerl, Elin Haugen, Patricia A. Tester Jan 2000

Tester

The recently described toxic dinoflagellate Pfiestena piscicida and morphologically similar Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates have become a major water quality issue with possible fish mortality and reported human health implications. The linkages between accelerated nutrient loading, eutrophication, and the proliferation of this group of dinoflagellates, however, are not well established for natural Systems. Phytoplankton pnmary production may provide a key link between nutrient inputs and potential outbreaks of Pfiesteria-like biflagellated zoospores in the Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina. The impacts of nutrient (NO3- -nitrogen and PO43- -phosphorus) supply rates, sediment-water column exchange, water column mixing, and phytoplankton prey …

Seasonal Changes In The Phytoplankton Of The Northeastern Mediterranean(Bay Of Iskenderun), Sevi̇m Polat, Ercan Sarihan, Tufan Koray Jan 2000

Seasonal Changes In The Phytoplankton Of The Northeastern Mediterranean(Bay Of Iskenderun), Sevi̇m Polat, Ercan Sarihan, Tufan Koray

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study was carried out in the northern part of the Bay of Iskenderun in the northeastern Mediterranean during the period 1994-1995. The quantitative and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton, the environmental factors that affect its distribution and the changes in succession over time were investigated. At each of the seven stations, monthly sampling was done from the surface and 10.0 m depth. In spring, the sampling was performed once every two weeks. In addition, the measurements of some physical and chemical parameters i.e. temperature, salinity, (NO^-_3 +NO^-_2 )-N and PO4^-_3 -P were carried out. At the end of the study, …

Intraspecific Variation In The Selenium Requirement Of Different Geographic Strains Of The Toxic Dinoflagellate Gymnodinium Catenatum, Martina A. Doblin, Susan I. Blackburn, Gustaaf M. Hallegraeff Jan 2000

Intraspecific Variation In The Selenium Requirement Of Different Geographic Strains Of The Toxic Dinoflagellate Gymnodinium Catenatum, Martina A. Doblin, Susan I. Blackburn, Gustaaf M. Hallegraeff

OES Faculty Publications

The requirement for selenium (IV) was assessed in five strains of the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, representing three populations from Tasmania (Australia), as well as one each from Japan and Spain. Strains were grown in nutrient-enriched sea water medium with 10-9 M selenium added as selenite (H2SeO3), or with no added selenium, and monitored for growth and cell yield. Strains exhibited different selenium (Se) requirements, as evidenced by (i) a decrease in exponential growth rate (10-20%) and cell yield (up to 80%) (Japanese strain); (ii) a decrease in cell yield only (Tasmania Derwent Estuary …

Algal Flora Of Lakes Aygir And Balıkli (Trabzon, Turkey), Bülent Şahi̇n Jan 2000

Algal Flora Of Lakes Aygir And Balıkli (Trabzon, Turkey), Bülent Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

The algal flora of lakes Aygir and Balıkli were studied qualitatively between June and Septembeer 1996. The flora of Lake Aygır was found to consist of 48 species, 26 belonging to Bacillariophyta, 17 to Chlorophyta, 4 to Cyanophyta and 1 to Euglenophyta. The flora of Lake Balıklı was found to consist of 71 species, 34 belonging to Bacillariophyta, 29 to Chlorophyta, 7 to Cyanophytaand 1 to Euglenophyta. The compositions of the species in the two lakes were similar. The main species of the algal flora of the lakes were members of Desmidiales.
