Comparison Of Forest Stand Edges In Riparian And Mesic Habitats Along Watts Bar Reservoir Shoreline, Ruth Anne Hanahan Dec 1996

Comparison Of Forest Stand Edges In Riparian And Mesic Habitats Along Watts Bar Reservoir Shoreline, Ruth Anne Hanahan

Masters Theses

Approximately fifty years ago, the landscape upslope from the natural, riverine position banks of the Tennessee River was inundated by the closing of Watts Bar Dam. On the currently forested shoreline, habitats within the direct influence of the reservoir pool are riparian. Those above that influence are mesic. The purpose of this research was to determine compositional and structural differences between edges of mature forest stands established in a riparian habitat and those established in a mesic habitat along Watts Bar Reservoir shoreline.

Thirty quadrats were placed on shoreline sites with mature, minimally-disturbed forest stands: 15 in a riparian habitat …

Effects Of Roads On Behavior And Survival Of Black Bears In Coastal North Carolina, David M. Brandenburg Aug 1996

Effects Of Roads On Behavior And Survival Of Black Bears In Coastal North Carolina, David M. Brandenburg

Masters Theses

I studied the effects of roads on the behavior and survival of black bears (Ursus americanus) at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Coastal North Carolina from May 1990 to December 1992. I used mark-recapture methods, radiotelemetry, and a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the study.

I estimated there were 16 bears on the study area in 1990. By 1992, the population likely was reduced to ≤6 bears (3.3 bears/100 km2), primarily from vehicle-kills. Since 1988, vehicle-kills accounted for 20 of 28 (71 %) of the total known mortality. The annual female survival rate was 71 …

Dietary Staus Index: Association With Food Groups And Body Mass Index In Rural East Tennessee Women Living In Public Housing, Linda Lou Knol Aug 1996

Dietary Staus Index: Association With Food Groups And Body Mass Index In Rural East Tennessee Women Living In Public Housing, Linda Lou Knol

Masters Theses

Dietary Status Index: Association with Food Groups and Body Mass

Index in Rural East Tennessee Women Living in Public Housing Objective: To determine if any differences existed in the number of servings per week consumed from designated food groups between women with low, medium or high Dietary Status Index (DSI) scores. Also, to determine if an association exists between Dietary Status Index (DSI) and Body Mass Index (BMI). DSI, a measure of both dietary adequacy and moderation, is the arithmetic mean of the Dietary Adequacy Score (DAS) and the Dietary Moderation Score (DMS).

Subjects: 121 non-pregnant females, 18 years or …

Analysis Of Free Sugars And Chlorophyll In Spinach From A Local Retail Market, Harvey J. Drews May 1996

Analysis Of Free Sugars And Chlorophyll In Spinach From A Local Retail Market, Harvey J. Drews

Masters Theses

The accuracy (percentage recovery) and precision (coefficient of variation or CV) of extraction and an anion-exchange HPLC method using amperometric detection for measurement of free sugars in spinach were determined. Five samples of fresh spinach leaves were extracted and analyzed by the HPLC method for glucose, fructose and sucrose. Different amounts (0.093 to 0.453% of spinach, wet basis or WB) of each of the latter sugars were added to each of five spinach samples and these spiked samples were analyzed in a similar manner as the unspiked samples. The average percentage recoveries of glucose, fructose and sucrose were respectively, 106.6, …

Molecular Approaches In Attempts To Identify The Flagellin B-Type Gene In Clone Pkw52, Yolanda F. Kirkpatrick May 1996

Molecular Approaches In Attempts To Identify The Flagellin B-Type Gene In Clone Pkw52, Yolanda F. Kirkpatrick

Masters Theses

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important pathogen for susceptible individuals particularly those immunocompromised due to the prolonged use of drugs, noscomial infections, burns, or cancer. In addition, P. aeruginosa infections are high among cystic fibrosis patients. P. aeruginosa presents a unique health concern and challenge for researchers due to its multiple virulence factors and the increasing number of patients developing P. aeruginosa infections. P. aeruginosa produces a variety of toxins and enzymes. The flagellum of P. aeruginosa allows the bacterium to be motile. Motility has enabled the P. aeruginosa bacterium to rapidly colonize the host's body.

The major structural component of …

Identification, Life Cycle, And Presence Of Nectria Species Associated With Beech Bark Disease In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park And The Effectiveness Of Nematogonum Ferrugineum As A Biocontrol, Brenda A. Rutherford May 1996

Identification, Life Cycle, And Presence Of Nectria Species Associated With Beech Bark Disease In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park And The Effectiveness Of Nematogonum Ferrugineum As A Biocontrol, Brenda A. Rutherford

Masters Theses

Two species of Nectria, N. galligena Bresadola and N. coccinea var. faginata Lohman, Watson, and Ayers, are associated with beech bark disease (BBD) in North America. In 1993, beech bark disease was discovered in the Great Smoky MOuntains National Park (GSMNP).

Ten sites for permanent plots were selected for incidence of the disease at different elevations in the GSMNP. These plots were rated four times in 1994 and 1995 for the presence of two scale insects, Cryptococcus fagisuga Lindinger and Xylococculus betulae (Pergande) Morrison, and the presence of perithecia of Nectria spp. The beech trees in each plot were also …

The Hydrologic Characterization Of Three Forested Headwater Riparian Wetlands In East Tennessee, Mark Hale Eisenbies May 1996

The Hydrologic Characterization Of Three Forested Headwater Riparian Wetlands In East Tennessee, Mark Hale Eisenbies

Masters Theses

Headwater riparian wetlands form an important hydrologic link between terrestrial and aquatic systems. These wetlands are small and account for only nine percent of the total wetland area in the US, however, they account for nearly half of the upland/wetland edge. Three headwater riparian wetlands were instrumented with flumes, solution samplers and shallow wells to monitor hydrologic and chemical interactions between physiographic positions and streams within the watersheds. The objectives of this study were to examine the general hydrologic and chemical characteristics of such wetlands. Water sampling was conducted in soils and streams during baseflow and stormflow conditions. Cross sections …
