The epidermis of larvae of Tedania ignis(Porifera, Demospongiae) is uniformly ciliated except for the posterior pole. The epidermal cells are long, columnar, and monociliate; each cilium arises from an epidermal crypt; symbiotic bacteria were not observed in larval cells. These lecithotrophic ("nonfeeding") larvae can feed by assimilating dissolved organic materials (DOM) from seawater. Larvae transported both the amino acid alanine (mean = 2.73 pmol larva-1 h-1; [S] = 1 µM) and the fatty acid palmitic acid (mean = 16.27 pmol larva-1 h-1; [S] = 1 µM) from seawater. The objectives of this research were to generate a set of sample parameters for the lightness of planed white oak dimension stock, to investigate the effect of grain angle on lightness values, and to determine the level of sampling needed to color match white oak dimension stock on the basis of lightness or darkness as quantified by the parameter L* (psychometric lightness). This information is important when used to determine the feasibility of low-cost portable instruments for evaluating color in an edge-glued hardwood panel production setting. Transcription of phospholipid biosynthetic genes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is maximally derepressed when cells are grown in the absence of inositol and repressed when the cells are grown in its presence. We have previously suggested that this response to inositol may be dictated by regulating transcription of the cognate activator gene, INO2. However, it was also known that cells which harbor a mutant opi1 allele express constitutively derepressed levels of target genes (INO1 and CHO1), implicating the OPI1 negative regulatory gene in the response to inositol. Soc. 115:12185–12186, 1993) that in the strict anaerobe methyl groups from exogenous L-methionine are incorporated specifically into the 1 and 3 positions (Fischer numbering system) on the heme groups of cytochrome c3. It was suggested that under anaerobic conditions, protoporphyrin IX biosynthesis proceeds via a novel pathway that does not involve coproporphyrinogen III as a precursor but instead may use precorrin-2 (1,3-dimethyluroporphyrinogen III), a siroheme and vitamin B12 precursor which is known to be derived from uroporphyrinogen III via methyl transfer from S-adenosyl-L-methionine. The phylogenetic relationships of the genera of the Juglandaceae are examined with cladistic analyses of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) restriction site variation and morphology. Rates of evolution of the chloroplast genome are slower than in many other groups of plants, enabling the entire genome to be utilized at the intergeneric level. The trees resulting from the two independent analyses were completely congruent. The combined analysis of the two data sets produced a tree completely congruent with the cladogram from the two data sets analyzed independently. The cladogram is compared with previous classifications, cladistic analyses, and fossil history for the family. Although …

Although the proteins that constitute the complex are located within the mitochondria, because of their intimate association with photosynthesis their expression is controlled by light. Comparisons of the kinetics of mRNA accumulation between the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and the H-protein of glycine decarboxylase during the greening of etiolated Arabidopsis thaliana suggest that their expression is controlled in parallel. A hierarchy of heterochronic genes, lin-4, lin-14, lin-28 and lin-29, temporally restricts terminal differentiation of Caenorhabditis elegans hypodermal seam cells to the final molt. This terminal differentiation event involves cell cycle exit, cell fusion and the differential regulation of genes expressed in the larval versus adult hypodermis. lin-29 is the most downstream gene in the developmental timing pathway and thus it is the most direct known regulator of these diverse processes. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the terminal differentiation of the hypodermal cells occurs at the larval-to-adult molt, and is characterized in part by the formation of a morphologically distinct adult cuticle. The timing of this event is controlled by a pathway of heterochronic genes that includes the relatively direct regulatory gene, lin-29, and upstream genes lin-4, lin-14 and lin-28. I examined the effects of successional changes in vegetation on the breeding dispersion of grassland birds in hayfields in New York. I sampled vegetation and counted birds in 90 hayfields of various ages (i.e. number of years since planting) and sizes that were originally planted to a legume-dominated seed mixture. I also resampled a subset of these fields two years later. Over time, these hayfields changed from tall, dense, homogeneous stands of legume-dominated vegetation to short, sparse, patchy stands of grass-dominated vegetation. Rapid escape behavior by mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducklings is restricted to burst swimming at the water surface. Maximum speed may be limited because of the pattern of waves created as the duckling's body moves through the water (hull speed). Burst speeds for 9-day-old ducklings were compared with predicted hull speeds, based on the waterline length of ducklings either resting in water or actively swimming. Kinematic analysis of video tapes showed a mean maximum burst speed of 1.73 m s(-1), which was four times greater than the predicted hull speed. Two emergence peaks were evident for adult Douglas-fir beetles (DFB), Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, collected from caged brood trees in 1994. The June peak resembled emergence patterns observed in previous years; however, an August peak was detected for the first time since monitoring of the outbreak began. The second peak likely resulted from delayed development of brood of the '93-'94 generation that largely overwintered as larvae. A portion of the '92-'93 generation also emerged in 1994, confirming that DFB can extend its life cycle to two years under certain conditions.
