The main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of steam explosion on the optical properties of recycled fibers, i.e., brightness, opacity, scattering and absorption coefficients, and to find out whether explosive discharge caused fiber damage and affected fiber bonding ability.

Laser printed paper was pulped by the steam explosion process. Addition of two different chemicals, residence time, pressure, and dispersant level were varied during the steam explosion experiments. All factors were kept at two levels.

Full factorial design and regression analysis were applied to determine the effect of different factors on steam explosion pulp. The data indicate …

Trees from East Texas loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus effiottii Engelm. ) pine plantations are one of the sources of raw material for conversion into products such as paper, veneer and lumber by East Texas forest product mills. The utilization of the planted trees may depend on various biological and economical factors. Factors such as tree size, tree condition, stumpage prices and interest rates can play a role in the merchandizing process.

Four different classes of commercial rheology modifiers (thickeners) e.g., Polyacrylate (PA), Associative Cellulosic Thickener (ACT), Associative Synthetic Thickener (AST) and CMC were used in a simplified coating formulation to study their effects on rheological and viscoelastic properties of the coating colors. An attempt was also made to study their effect on runnability using the Cylindrical Laboratory Coater (CLC). A series of coatings were prepared using number one clay and styrene-butadiene latex. We studied the development of vegetation in a small area at the UWM Field Station planted with prairie species in 1986. The species and quantities of seed and seedlings planted in 1986 were recorded. We sampled the vegetation using permanent quadrats in 1988and 1994. Native prairie species were already well established in the area in 1988. There was, however, a dramatic change in the composition of the vegetation between 1988 and 1994. The number of native prairie species increased slightly and the number of non-prairie species decreased substantially, so that in 1988, 51% of species were native prairie plants and …

Of the approximately 11.2 million acres of forest in East Texas, about 2.5 million acres have been planted with loblolly pine trees ( Pinus taeda L. ) and 500,000 acres with slash pine trees ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ). These plantations are owned by public, industrial and non-industrial private entities with industrial ownership dominating. Even though most pine plantations in East Texas are relatively young (20 years or less), plantation information is needed for management decision-making.

In East Texas, there are approximately 3 million acres of loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ) pine plantations. Most of these plantations, which represent about 25% of the forested area of East Texas, have been planted since 1970.

As these planted trees age, East Texas foresters may be considering initial timber harvesting decisions for unthinned plantations. Often the timing of the harvests can be determined by considering combinations of economic and non-economic values, utilization standards and timber growth' factors. The distribution of genetic variation within and among plant populations is influenced by both contemporary and historical factors. I used isozyme analysis of band phenotypes to examine genetic structure in the rare prairie forb Silene regia. Relationships between current-day population size, isolation, and phenotypic variation were assessed for 18 populations in two regions with differing postglacial history. Western populations from unglaciated southern Missouri and Arkansas were more genetically diverse based on the Shannon-Weaver index (H) and a polymorphic index than were more eastern populations. Five polyacrylate samples were used to study their effects on coating color rheology, water holding and runnability. The Cylindrical Laboratory Coater was used to apply the coatings and study the runnability of the coating colors. The healing tendencies of the coatings were studied by inducing a scratch under the blade. The higher acid level and degree of crosslinking of the polyacrylate gave higher viscosity and the higher acid level also gave higher water retention. Coating colors containing polyacrylates were less prone to dilatancy at high shear. The addition of polyacrylate reduced the healing of coating colors, but for the same …

Sayok's (1986) study and statistical analysis of the climate at Nacogdoches, Texas covering 1901 to 1980 is updated to include the most recent twelve years (1981-92) of records. Missing data are estimated, all analyses are repeated, and the new 1961-90 normal climate is compared to the 1951-80 and other normals. Results showed that the climate at Nacogdoches during the last decade was about the same as that in other recent decades. Thomthwaite's (1957) climate classification defines Nacogdoches as moist subhumid, third mesothermal, with moderate summer water deficiency, and a temperature effIciency regime equal to a fourth mesothermal climate. Effects Of Alkaline Internal Sizing On Rotogravure Print Quality Using Waterbased Inks, Michael L. Busche

The effect of alkaline internal sizing in improving paper smoothness and ink gloss in waterbased rotogravure printing was investigated. Papers were internally sized with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) under alkaline conditions from slack-sized to hard-sized. Papers were printed with waterbased inks on a web gravure press. A major problem with waterbased inks is increased surface roughening of paper and a low ink gloss. Temporal surface roughening was reduced by increased AKD internal sizing with a concomitant significant increase of up to 400% in ink gloss. Surface properties were correlated with print quality. A visitor survey was conducted at Ratcliff and Double Lake National Forest Recreation Areas to evaluate visitor characteristics and the effectiveness of interpretive services as a management tool. Two hundred eighty-two campers completed the visitor survey. A one hundred percent sample was attempted at both recreation areas every Sunday morning during July and August of 1991. Data from both recreation areas were analyzed and compared in order to determine any significant differences between visitors in each recreation area and also between visitors who attended or did not attend interpretive programs.

Elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) density and foraging behavior were monitored in conjunction with disturbance by livestock (cattle and sheep) from 1991 to 1993 at Deseret Land and Livestock property near Woodruff, Utah. Elk and deer densities declined by as much as 92% in response to introduction of livestock, while associated areas where livestock were absent did not show this response. Biting rates and bite sizes were estimated and used to determine instantaneous intake rate. Incorporating Vegetative Diversity Measures In Forest-Level Planning: A Case Study On The Utah State University School Forest, David N. Holland

Three indices of forest stand structural and compositional diversity were incorporated into a linear programming, timber-harvest scheduling model to examine the tradeoffs between managing stands for timber production and biodiversity objectives. While harvest-level objectives were fairly compatible with the maintenance of biodiversity, present net worth maximization resulted in substantial reductions in all three measures of biodiversity.

A comprehensive fuel load assessment of all plant communities in Bryce Canyon National Park is provided. Fuel loads by community type are pooled into "fuel type associations" based on similarity in predicted fire behavior, and the fuel type associations are mapped throughout the Park. For each fuel type association, a series of fire behavior simulations is presented describing expected rates of spread and intensities for typical conditions in each month of the fire season and for a worst-case scenario.
