Manipulation Of The Soil Seed Reserves Of Bromus Diandrus And B. Rigidus By Enhancing The Breakdown In Seed Dormancy., A H. Cheam Jan 1987

Manipulation Of The Soil Seed Reserves Of Bromus Diandrus And B. Rigidus By Enhancing The Breakdown In Seed Dormancy., A H. Cheam

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Location: South Perth Field Plots

Previous studies on the seed bank of Bromus diandrus indicated that shallow burial of newly shed seeds enhanced the breakdown in seed dormancy over the summer period. To bury the Bromus seeds one practical approach is to introduce sheep into the paddock.
This study is a repeat of the previous work but included B. rigidus, another species of Bromus, that is commonly ground growing in association with B. diandrus.
Location: South Perth Field Plots.

Microhabitat Selection And Diel Movements Of Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Introduced Into Mid-Elevation Reservoirs In Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Roger Tabor Jan 1987

Microhabitat Selection And Diel Movements Of Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Introduced Into Mid-Elevation Reservoirs In Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Roger Tabor

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The distribution and movement patterns of fingerling rainbow trout stocked into reservoirs in Utah were investigated with · SCUBA observations and by vertical gill netting. For several weeks after stocking, fingerling trout (ca. 80 mm standard length) were strongly oriented to the shore, and selected habitats providing cover. During the underwater observations, no fish were seen below depths of 2 meters. Two weeks after stocking, the fingerlings were most abundant under docks near where they were planted, indicating that dispersal was relatively slow. Jacob's electivity indices for natural substrates in water 0-1.5 meter deep were in sand, gravel, cobble, boulders …

Importance Of Predation By Adult Trout On Mortality Rates Of Fingerling Rainbow Trout Stocked In East Canyon Reservoir, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1987

Importance Of Predation By Adult Trout On Mortality Rates Of Fingerling Rainbow Trout Stocked In East Canyon Reservoir, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Personnel from Utah State University, working in cooperation with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the Utah Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, are attempting to determine various sources of mortality of fingerling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) stocked into mid-elevation reservoirs in the State. Returns of planted fish are often much below desired levels. Angler surveys indicate that in East Canyon Reservoir, fishermen harvest only about 30% of the fingerling trout stocked, and this is a much higher return than in many other waters.

Studies Of Pipefish Foraging In Simulated Seagrass Habitats, Clifford H. Ryer Jan 1987

Studies Of Pipefish Foraging In Simulated Seagrass Habitats, Clifford H. Ryer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Laboratory experiments determined the effects of two levels of habitat complexity upon pipefish (Syngnathus fuscus) foraging for amphipods. Habitats were composed of equal densities of either narrow (low complexity) or wide (high complexity) leafed artificial seagrass. The response to habitat, as measured by rate of encounter with amphipods, probability of attack after encounter, probability of success after attack, and overall rate of amphipod consumption, was determined for combinations of two fish size classes and three amphipod size classes. Small fish did not experience visually inhibitive effects in either habitat, while large fish had their visual fields impinged upon in the …

Is Growth Of Eelgrass Nitrogen Limited? A Numerical Simulation Of The Effects Of Light And Nitrogen On The Growth Dynamics Of Zostera Marina, Richard C. Zimmerman, Robert D. Smith, Randall S. Alberte Jan 1987

Is Growth Of Eelgrass Nitrogen Limited? A Numerical Simulation Of The Effects Of Light And Nitrogen On The Growth Dynamics Of Zostera Marina, Richard C. Zimmerman, Robert D. Smith, Randall S. Alberte

OES Faculty Publications

A numerical model of nitrogen uptake and growth was developed for the temperate seagrass Zostera marina L. Goals were to evaluate the relative effects of light and nitrogen availability on nitrogen uptake and partitioning between leaf and root tissue, and to estimate nitrogen concentrations in the sedment and water column required to saturate growth. Steady-state predictions are quite robust with respect to a range of parameter values justified by available data The calculations indicated that roots are probably more important in overall nitrogen acquisition in most light and nitrogen environments encountered in situ, but may contribute less than 50 …
