Plasticity Of Expression Of A Synaptic Vesicle Antigen In Adult Rat Superior Cervical Ganglion, Karen F. Greif
Plasticity Of Expression Of A Synaptic Vesicle Antigen In Adult Rat Superior Cervical Ganglion, Karen F. Greif
Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship
The effects of deafferentation and alterations of synaptic activity on levels of a synaptic vesicle-specific membrane protein (SV) were studied in the adult rat superior cervical ganglion (SCG) in vivo, using a monoclonal antibody directed against the protein. Levels of SV were quantified by radioimmunoassay. Deafferentation of the SCG results in a transient increase in SV levels in the SCG on days 7 and 10 after surgery, with levels then dropping below control levels on days 14, 21, and 30 after surgery. Immunohistochemical labeling of deafferented ganglia indicates that the increase is confined to the perikarya of principal ganglionic neurons. …

The Homeo Domain Of A Murine Protein Binds 5' To Its Own Homeo Box., Abraham Fainsod, Leonard D. Bogarad, Tarmo Ruusala, Martin Lubin
Dartmouth Scholarship
Nuclear protein extracts from day 12.5 mouse embryos were used to study protein binding to DNA sequences 5' of the Hox 1.5 homeo box. Embryos of this developmental stage are known to express this gene. DNA binding protein blotting and retardation gel techniques show that murine embryonic nuclear proteins specifically bind a 753-base pair (bp) DNA fragment from the region upstream of the Hox 1.5 homeo box. A fusion protein containing the Hox 1.5 homeo domain constructed in lambda gt11 also binds the same 753-bp DNA fragment. Specific binding of the fusion protein to the upstream DNA fragment shows that …

Identification And Analysis Of Ichthyofaunal Remains From Late Pleistocene-Holocene Deposits Of Cheek Bend Cave (40mu261), Maury County, Tennessee, William Clark Dickinson
Doctoral Dissertations
Knowledge of the character of the late Pleistocene-Holocene ichthyofauna of the middle Duck River was acquired as a result of identification and biostratigraphic analysis of numerous fish bone fragments from the well-stratified deposits of Cheek Bend Cave, a small rockshelter situated in the limestone bluffs along the Duck River in Maury County, Tennessee. Forty-five unequivocal fish taxa (representing 12 families) were identified, of which 25 taxa occurred in the Late Wisconsin strata, 33 in Holocene strata, and 13 in both depositional sequences. Fifteen of the Late Wisconsin taxa and 18 Holocene taxa appear to represent initial records for these periods, …

Characterization Of A Supercoil-Dependent S1 Sensitive Site 5' To The Drosophila Melanogaster Hsp 26 Gene, Ester Siegfried, Graham H. Thomas, U Bond, Sarah C.R. Elgin
Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations
We have analyzed the prominent supercoil-dependent S1 nuclease cleavage site 5' to hsp 26 in the plasmid 88B13, which contains 11.7 kilobases from the Drosophila locus 67B1. The double stranded cleavage product is generated by initial nicking on the purine strand, six preferred sites occurring between positions -96 and -90 (relative to the start of transcription) with weaker ones extending to position -84, followed by cleavage on the pyrimidine strand at positions -86 and -84. A derivative of 88B13, 88B13-X, was generated by insertion of an Xho I linker at position -84; this does not affect the positions or strand …

Clinical And Laboratory Study Of Sickle Cell/Β-Thalassemia, Koichi Maeda, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Robert C. Hawley
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We have studied 39 patients doubly heterozygous for sickle cell/β-thalassemia, 12 with sickle cell/βo- thalassemia and 27 with sickle cell/β+-thalassemia. Generally, sickle cell/βo-thalassemia is considered more severe than sickle cell/β+-thalassemia. In our study, however clinical complications in the group with sickle cell/β+-thalassemia were seen almost as frequently as in the group with sickle cell/βo-thalassemia. A wide variety of clinical manifestations were seen in both groups of patients.

Radiographic Features Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Mark I. Burnstein, Burton I. Ellis, Robert A. Teitge, Martin L. Gross, Christopher K. Shier
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Anterior cruciate ligament disruption is a common injury that occurs in contact sports such as football. The treating orthopedic surgeon may elect any of a variety of therapeutic options. Surgical management may consist of primary repair of the torn ligament or replacement of the torn ligament with graft material, known as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACER). Many physicians, including radiologists, are unfamiliar with the surgical procedure or the expected postoperative radiographic appearance of ACER. Assessment of radiographs following ACER, as with many surgical procedures, requires understanding of the surgical procedure. We present our experience in assessing the postoperative radiographs of …

Characteristics, Mortality, And Outcome Of Infants Weighing Over 2500 Grams Who Require Intensive Care, Anthony Udo-Inyang, Chang Y. Lee
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Documentations of morbidity and mortality of infants weighing over 2500 g who require intensive care, along with research to improve their outcome, have not received adequate emphasis in the literature. From 1981 to 1984 these infants accounted for 495 (40.1%) admissions and 16 (9.8%) deaths in Henry Ford Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. The most common diagnoses were hematologic diseases (24.6%), meconium aspiration (20.4%), respiratory distress/asphyxia (17.2%), congenital anomalies (13.8%), and infants of diabetic mothers (10.7%). Infant mortality was 56.2% from congenital anomalies. 25% from meconium aspiration, 6.2% from infection, 6.2% from maternal accident, and 6.2% from accidental neonatal asphyxia. …
The First-Bite Syndrome, William S. Haubrich
The First-Bite Syndrome, William S. Haubrich
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Patients presenting with esophageal disorders often describe what can be called a "first-bite syndrome." The condition can be discerned by its characteristic clinical features. It may be a variant of diffuse esophageal spasm. While in a majority of patients it is a benign functional disturbance, it can be a harbinger of carcinoma. When of functional origin, it is amenable, in most cases, to relatively simple medical management.

Small Cell Carcinoma Of The Lung In The Intensive Care Unit, Paul Harkaway, Cynthia Glines, Michael Eichenhorn, Paul Kvale, Robert Chapman, John Popovich Jr.
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The outcome of 29 patients with a diagnosis of small cell carcinoma of the lung admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) from 1980 through 1984 was reviewed retrospectively. Respiratory failure was the most common admitting diagnosis (23 patients [80%]). followed by cardiopulmonary arrest (three patients [10%]), and hypotension (three patients [10%] ). Only five patients survived to leave the MICU, and only two of these patients lived longer than two months after MICU discharge. Of the features examined, the absence of sepsis was the only statistically significant predictor of MICU survival. Treatment of the malignancy did not appear …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Clinical and echocardiographic features of a patient with extensive metastasis to the pericardium and myocardium are presented. Echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion, markedly thickened pericardium, and myocardium with increased echogenicity. These findings were subsequently confirmed during surgery and autopsy, which revealed marked tumor encasement of the heart and pericardial myocardial infiltration.
A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood
A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
A taxonomic revision of the genera of Scolytidae (Coleoptera) in the world fauna is presented. Included are 215 valid genera and 273 invalid generic and subgeneric names. The type-species for each genus-group name was examined, including the type-specimen of the type-species in those taxa where a holotype, lectotype, or neotype has been designated—with the exception of four contemporary genera, the type-series of which are lost, and six fossil genera for which no effort was made to locate the types. Taxonomic keys to the families of the Curculionoidea, and to the subfamilies, tribes, and genera of Scolytidae are presented. Descriptions and …
Fetal Whole-Body Fluid, Cardiovascular And Endocrine Dynamics : Computer Analysis Of Regulatory Mechanisms, Peter Stuart Gold
Fetal Whole-Body Fluid, Cardiovascular And Endocrine Dynamics : Computer Analysis Of Regulatory Mechanisms, Peter Stuart Gold
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The dynamics of transcapillary fluid and protein distribution and endocrine regulation of cardiovascular function were studied in chronically instrumented fetal sheep during the third trimester. Average experimental changes in vascular pressures, blood volume, plasma hormone concentrations, hematocrit and plasma protein concentration were analyzed using mathematical modeling and parameter optimization techniques in order to determine values for the major parameters which regulate fluid, protein and endocrine dynamics and to determine endocrine dose-response relationships to changes in cardiovascular function. The hormones which were considered are arginine vasopressin (AVP), angiotensin II (AII), epinephrine (EPI) and norepinephrine (NE). Vascular disturbances which were considered include …
Running Endurance In 27-Hour Fasted Humans, Kristin A. Carlson
Running Endurance In 27-Hour Fasted Humans, Kristin A. Carlson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Nine male marathon runners were exercised to exhaustion to determine the effects of a 27-hour fast on endurance performance. Each subject completed two exercise tests at 72% peak oxygen uptake (Vo2max), one following a 27-hour fast and one three hours after a pre-exercise meal, in random order. Fasting caused a 44.7±5.8% (±SE) decrease in endurance performance (p2(9.3±2.0%), heart rate (8.4±2.4%), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and psychological fatigue, evident within the first 60 minutes of exercise. There was no difference in plasma glucose or epinephrine levels. Muscle glycogen degraded at the same rate (0.48±.15 vs 0.47±.28 u moles …
Late Pleistocene Sciurids From Kokoweef Cave, H. Thomas Goodwin
Late Pleistocene Sciurids From Kokoweef Cave, H. Thomas Goodwin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Three local (Tamias panamintinus, Ammospermophilus leucurus and Spermophilus variegatus) and five extralocal (Tamias minimus, Tamias palmeri, Marmota flaviventris, Spermophilus townsendii, and Spermophilus lateralis) sciurid species (Sciuridae) were identified from the late Pleistocene-early Holocene Kokoweef Cave paleofauna. This fauna was the first documentation of T. minimus, T. palmeri and S. townsendii from the Pleistocene of the Mohave Desert. The 30-ft sedimentary sequence apparently recorded the mid-to late-Wisconsian introduction of S. lateralis into the Kokweef fauna but otherwise documented general taxonomic stability. The ecological diversity of the fauna was consistent with--but did not require--the hypothesis of more equable late Pleistocene climates, and …

Proximity Nesting: The Great Horned Owl And Red-Tailed Hawk, Steve Shupe
Nebraska Bird Review
Introduction: Forty-two nests of the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) and 78 nests of the Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaieensis) were surveyed during a three-year ecological study (1982–84). In 11 instances nests of the two species overlapped the hunting areas of the other. Home ranges, in which most hunting takes place, have been defined by various authors (Miller, 1930; Baumgartner, 1939; Hagar, 1967). For this study Hawks and Owls nesting within one-half mile of each other were compared. The proximity nesting of these two species seemed likely to increase the possibility of predation upon the young of …

Cassin’S Sparrow In Garden County, Thomas E. Labedz
Nebraska Bird Review
On 21 May 1986, while searching for evidence of breeding birds in atlas block 2G04 near Lisco, Garden County, Nebraska, I discovered a Cassin’s Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii). This sighting was at 5:20 PM Mountain Daylight Time, along the county road in the northeast corner of Section 11. I was driving slowly down the road and stopped to observe an odd sparrow. I nearly drove past, thinking it was another Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), which I had heard and seen all day. The sparrow, which appeared larger than a Grasshopper Sparrow, was perched on the low wire …
