Synchronization Of Estrus And Insemination Time In Beef Cows, M.D. Heekin, G.H. Kiracofe, R.R. Schalles, H.S. Ward

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

We used 76 cows to determine the effect of inseminating at different times after detecting estrus and to evaluate Synchronization B as an estrus synchronizing agent. Cows were divided into five groups: (1) nonsynchronized bred naturally; (2) nonsynchronized bred once a day approximately 12 to 24 hours after detecting estrus; (3) nonsynchronized bred twice a day approximately 12 hours after estrus; (4) synchronized bred once a day, and (5) synchronized bred twice a day. Synchronizing did not affect conception rate with twice-a-day breeding, but did with once-a-day breeding. Conception rates during the first 25 days of the breeding season were …

Wheat, Barley, Oat And Corn Silage Rations For Growing Steers, K. Bolsen, J. Oltjen, Jack G. Riley Jan 1977

Wheat, Barley, Oat And Corn Silage Rations For Growing Steers, K. Bolsen, J. Oltjen, Jack G. Riley

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Eleven wheat, barley, oat and corn silages were evaluated in two steers growing trials in 1975 and 1976. In both trials, steers fed barley or corn silages had similar rate and efficiency of gains. Also, barley and corn silages supported greater performance than any of the seven wheat or oat silages. In the 1976 trial steers fed Trio or Lodi oat silage had the lowest feed consumption and made the slowest and least efficient gains. For an average of the two trials barley and corn silages had similar feeding values. Wheat silages had 90 and 80% the relative feeding value …

Vibriosis In Fish, G. L. Bullock Jan 1977

Vibriosis In Fish, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Fish vibriosis is a systemic disease of marine, estuarine, and some freshwater fishes, caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio (Ross et al. 1968, Ghittino et al. 1972). The disease has been known for centuries; outbreaks along the Italian coast were recorded as early as the 1500's. Terms such as "red pest," "red boil," "red plague," or "saltwater furunculosis" have been applied to vibrio infections, but vibriosis is a more specific term and is now used by most fishery workers. With the rapid development of mariculture, vibriosis has become a major cause of fish loss--sometimes to the extent of being …

Spring Viremia Of Carp, Winfried Ahne, Ken Wolf Jan 1977

Spring Viremia Of Carp, Winfried Ahne, Ken Wolf

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Dating back nearly SO years and possibly even to the Middle Ages, European pond culture of carp (Cyprinus carpio) and perhaps other cyprinid fishes has been plagued with a contagious disease of great importance. Variously known as infectious dropsy, infectious ascites, hemorrhagic septicemia, or rubella, the disease is probably the most serious cause of losses among these fishes; nearly sao reports have been published on the subject.

Nesting By Ferruginous Hawks And Other Raptors On High Voltage Powerline Towers, David S. Gilmer, John M. Wiehe Jan 1977

Nesting By Ferruginous Hawks And Other Raptors On High Voltage Powerline Towers, David S. Gilmer, John M. Wiehe

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

High voltage powerlines form a spider-web pattern across North Dakota as they radiate outward from electric generating sources at Garrison Dam and nearby lignite-fired power plants. In 1976 there were approximately 1100 miles of high voltage powerline in the state, which required approximately 4500 large steel or aluminum towers for support (G. R. Anderson, personal communication). Moreover, officials of power cooperatives and privately-owned utilities anticipate the construction of over 900 additional miles of high voltage lines by 1981. As North Dakota coal resources are developed the powerline network will probably continue to grow.

Our interest in powerlines was stimulated several …

Yellow-Crowned Night Herons Sighted In North Dakota, Dennis G. Jorde, Gary L. Krapu, Robert K. Green

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Yellow-crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) sighted at four locations in North Dakota during 1976 appear to be the first observations of this species for the State. We sighted a single individual about 8 km south of Medina, North Dakota in western Stutsman County during several visits in June and July 1976. The bird was first seen on 23 June standing in a pasture adjoining an 8.5 ha semi-permanent marsh. On following visits, the heron usually was seen perched in trees at the edge of the wetland. A single yellow-crowned night heron was sighted on the same wetland on …

Upland Nesting Of American Bitterns, Marsh Hawks, And Short-Eared Owls, Harold F. Duebbert, John T. Lokemoen Jan 1977

Upland Nesting Of American Bitterns, Marsh Hawks, And Short-Eared Owls, Harold F. Duebbert, John T. Lokemoen

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Nests of American Bitterns (Botaurus lentiginosus), marsh hawks (Circus cyaneus), and short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) are usually found in wetland habitats. Although large marshes containing dense stands of bulrushes (Scirpus), cattails (Typha), or other wetland vegetation are favored nesting cover, these birds have also been reported to nest in stands of tall, dense shrubs and grasses on the upland (Bent 1961, 1963; Palmer 1962; Sealy 1967; Stewart 1975). During 1968-74, we regularly found upland nests of these three species while conducting duck nesting studies in planted fields of undisturbed grass-legume …

Germination Study Of Dormant Cercis Canadensis L. Seed, Glenn Hosokawa Jan 1977

Germination Study Of Dormant Cercis Canadensis L. Seed, Glenn Hosokawa

Masters Theses

Cercis canadensis L. (redbud) seeds have been shown to require both scarification and stratification before germination occurs. Seeds which were leached prior to the scarification-stratification treatments were found to germinate more quickly, and CaSO4 solution was found to enhance germination. However, the percent germination remained approximately the same and leaching failed to substitute for the stratification requirement. Extraction studies indicated that germination inhibitors were present in scarified-non stratified seeds, however, the presence of germination promoters in scarified-stratified seeds could not be demonstrated. Germination occurred in either light or dark conditions. Gibberellic acid was found to substitute for stratification, and …

Viability Of Pre-Adult Stages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Khadijeh Shakerifar Jan 1977

Viability Of Pre-Adult Stages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Khadijeh Shakerifar

Masters Theses

The pre-adult viability of four pure strains and two hybrid strains was determined for Drosophila melanogaster. The data fail to show significant mortality and the ratios of the duration of the three different stages remained approximately constant. There are many factors which have been found to affect survivorship; one factor is density. As density of population within a limited and closed universe increases, the rate of mortality would increase and viability would generally decrease. However, our densities were well within the range having no effect on viability. Under the conditions these experiments were performed, no genetic or environmental factors …

The Effect Of Ergosterol On The Desaturation Of 14c-Labeled Oleic Acid In Tetrahymena, Maynard E. Neville Jr. Jan 1977

The Effect Of Ergosterol On The Desaturation Of 14c-Labeled Oleic Acid In Tetrahymena, Maynard E. Neville Jr.

Masters Theses

The ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis-Strain W desaturated 14C-labeled fatty acid substrate in both sterol supplemented (ergosterol) and nonsupplemented cultures. Cis-octadecenoic acid (14C-9-18:1), when added to the medium during the log phase of growth, was incorporated into the cells and also desaturated at the Δ6 and Δ12 positions. The 14C labeled substrate and products, linoleate (9,12-18:2) or linolenate (6,9,12-18:3) were recovered and separated by silver-nitrate Unisil column chromatography. Initially, recovery of 14C compounds varied widely when expressed as the percent of total counts per minute recovered from column chromotography, and a variety of …

A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers Jan 1977

A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers

Masters Theses

The establishment of normal chromosomal patterns for a wide range of plants and animals has led to the recognition of abnormalities as well as their relationship to phenotypic irregularities. Research dealing with the expression of human karyotype is of prime interest; but, closely rivaling that is the genetic study of domestic animals which are of economic importance to man.

One observed anomaly which has come under scrutiny by cytogeneticists is that of the female member of a heterogeneous bovine twin pair, the freemartin. This is a sterile animal with internal morphology showing varying degrees of intersex. Cytogenetic studies reveal XX/XY …

Blood Parasites Of Squirrels From Coles And Lake Counties In Illinois, Nicholas I. Obiri Jan 1977

Blood Parasites Of Squirrels From Coles And Lake Counties In Illinois, Nicholas I. Obiri

Masters Theses

Hepatozoon and microfilariae are described from the blood of fox and gray squirrels captured in Coles and Lake Counties in Illinois during 1976 and 1977. The hepatozoon species is identified as Hepatozoon griseisciuri on the basis of parasite morphology and hosts. A higher rate of infection (35.7% : 11.1%) was observed in gray squirrels than in fox squirrels and more adults were infected than juveniles. No microfilariae were found in gray squirrels but fox squirrels had a 57.1% infection rate with no difference based on age. The observed microfilariae are similar to that described by Davidson from Maryland gray squirrels …

A Comparative Study Of Aldehyde Oxidase From Tumorous-Head And Oregon-R-C Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Richard A. Respess Jan 1977

A Comparative Study Of Aldehyde Oxidase From Tumorous-Head And Oregon-R-C Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Richard A. Respess

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Aldehyde oxidase has been partially purified from Oregon-R-C and tuh(ASU) strains of Drosophila melanogaster using an affinity technique. The two enzymes were subjected to a partial kinetic analysis and found to be very similar to one another. This indicated the problem of elevated aldehyde oxidase activity in tuh(ASU) at key developmental stages (Kuhn and Cunningham, 1976) is due to an abnormal regulation. A comparative isozyme study through the developmental stages showed no major differences between the enzymes indirectly supporting the idea of an abnormal regulation. A comparison of tuh(ASU) with four wild-type strains indicated it may be a fourth allozyme …

Studies On The Genus Streptococcus, Janet Lee Storey Jan 1977

Studies On The Genus Streptococcus, Janet Lee Storey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The streptococci, as a group, are gram positive cocci which occur in pairs or chains; they are nonmotile, nonsporing, and catalase negative. Most species are facultative anaerobes, and a few are obligate anaerobes. They are chemorganotrophs producing lactic acid as an end product of glucose metabolism. The G + C (guanine + cytosine) content reported for 15 species is 33-42% (Diebel and Seeley, 1974). The genus Streptococcus includes a large number of saprophytic, pathogenic and non pathogenic species. Many of these bacteria are members of the normal body flora. However, man is very susceptible to the pathogenic members, and no …

Calcification And Productivity In A Dominant Shallow Water Reef Building Coral, Acropora Palmata (Lamarck), Elizabeth H. Gladfelter Jan 1977

Calcification And Productivity In A Dominant Shallow Water Reef Building Coral, Acropora Palmata (Lamarck), Elizabeth H. Gladfelter

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Coral reefs are "constructional physiographic features of tropical seas consisting fundamentally of a rigid calcareous framework made up mainly of the interlocked and encrusting skeletons of reef-building (hermatypic) corals (Wells,1957). The principal organisms responsible for the construction of modern day coral reefs, the stony corals, comprise the cnidarian order Scleractinia, which is closely allied to the sea anemones (Actinaria). Individual polyps secrete a calcium carbonate skeletal cup (calyx) beneath the basal epidermis. In most coral species the polyps remain connected by living tissue forming a colony and calcium carbonate is deposited beneath the basal epidermis of the entire colony, thereby …

A Comparative Study Of The Vascular Plants Of Three Vernal Pools In The San Joaquin Valley, California, Robert Howard Smookler Jan 1977

A Comparative Study Of The Vascular Plants Of Three Vernal Pools In The San Joaquin Valley, California, Robert Howard Smookler

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Today a good deal is known about the general nature and flora of vernal pools. Nevertheless, there is very limited information or actual documentation in the scientific literature. Vernal pools need to be studied more extensively. and they still offer unlimited opportunities for such research (Holland and Griggs 1976).

The purpose of this investigation was to enumerate and compare the vascular plant species occurring at three vernal pools in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

The present paper describes aspects of the reproductive biology and larval development of P. girardi and presents descriptions and illustrations of developing larvae and recently metamorphosed juveniles.

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator Of The Cation Transport Adenosinetriphosophatase In Bovine Caudate Nucleus, Paul Culver Jan 1977

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator Of The Cation Transport Adenosinetriphosophatase In Bovine Caudate Nucleus, Paul Culver

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To many investigators, these observations suggested the existence of a molecular “pump” mechanism responsible for the maintenance of the ionic gradients. Extensive research over the last twenty years has resulted in the assignment of this role to the magnesium-dependent, sodium- and potassium-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase, first reported by Skou in 1957. This membrane-bound enzyme is the subject of the research presented in this thesis.
