The number of pound nets and the catch of· alosines per net continued to decline in 1975. Effort by sta.ke gill nets.· increased but catch estimates declined. The James River · yielded an estimated 853,847 pounds of American shad (down 47% from 1974) with the peak of the run at the end of March. Stake gill nets landed 246,036. pounds of American shad in the York River, a decrease from 1974. Estimates of Hickory shad landings declined 83% in the York River. Pound nets in the Rappahannock River had a 75% reduction in American shad catch and stake gill net …

Vepco Surry Power Plant Study, River Biota And Phytoplankton Entrainment Sections : Progress Report July 1975, R. Jordan, R. Carpenter, C. Becker, M Ho

Reports

This report summarizes the biological data collected from January through June 1975 in the river and phytoplankton entrainment portions of the VEPCO Surry Power Plant Study. The sampling program conducted during this period in the Hog Island area of the James River consisted of an expanded version of a study initiated in May 1969 to monitor certain aquatic communities that could be affected by the operation of the power plant. The river phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos and fouling organism communities have been included in the past and present study designs. The phytoplankton entrainment substudy was begun in April 1975 with the …

Reports

This study, prepared for the National Commission on Water Quality, is an analysis of the present and future water quality in the Chesapeake Bay from the Susquehanna River at Conowingo, Md. to the Atlantic Ocean. The objectives addressed in this volume of the study are 1.) Description of the present conditions of water quality and water quantity with respect to temperature, salinity, nutrients and dissolved oxygen. and 2.) Projection of future water quality conditions associated with the achievement of require ments and goals of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, P.L. 92-500, 86 Stat. 816. The assessment …

Final Report On Effects Of Low Oxygen Tensions And High Levels Of Hydrogen Sulfide On Benthic Marine Animals, Dexter S. Haven, Robert E. Bendl

Reports

This study investigated effects of low levels of dissolved oxygen (D .O.) and low levels of D.O. in combination with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on the larvae and adults of oysters Crassostra virginica and on adults of hard clams Mercenaria mercenaria. The purpose of this study was to investigate how low D.O. and low D. O. plus H2S, which might be associated with discharges from sewerage treatment plants, could adversely influence populations of molluscs .

Biology And Management Of River Herring And Shad In Virginia : Annual Report, Anadromous Fish Project 1974, Walter J. Hoagman, John V. Merriner, William K. Kriete, Woodrow L. Wilson

Reports

This annual report covers the period October, .1973 through September, 1974. It is the seventh report generated by' the project, with 3-year completion reports prepared in 1970 and 1973. The project· is continuing at VIMS and each year allows stronger conclusions to be made concerning trends in the basic population parameters studied.

The 1970-1973 completion report was widely distributed in Virginia, libraries at fishery science institutes, and throughout the National Marine Fisheries Service. The completion report analyzed data from the entire history of the project. In many cases the entire summarized data core for a particular segment was presented, e.g. …

Remote Sensing Of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation In The Lower Chesapeake Bay : Final Report To National Aeronautical And Space Administration Langley Research Center, Robert J. Orth, Hayden H. Gordon Jan 1975

Remote Sensing Of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation In The Lower Chesapeake Bay : Final Report To National Aeronautical And Space Administration Langley Research Center, Robert J. Orth, Hayden H. Gordon

Reports

Kodak's experimental water penetration film and black and white near infrared film were used to study the distribution of submerged aquatic vegetation in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The water penetration film was very useful in this study compared to the black and white N1R. Optimal results from this film were obtained with the camera aperture closed 1/2 stop from suggested settings. Detailed description of the grass beds were obtained by flying at an altitude of 5,000 feet, at low tide when wind conditions were minimal.

There was a 36% reduction in the amount of submerged aquatic vegetation in the lower …
