The Effects Of Irradiating Dormant Maize Seeds With Xrays And Thermal Neutrons, Rosalind Morris, E. F. Frolik
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
In 1951 a research program was started at the University of Nebraska to compare the developmental effects of thermal neutrons and X rays on different crop seeds. Three crops, barley, tomato and maize, were chosen for additional information involving induced chromosomal aberrations and seedling mutations. The maize investigations are presented in this bulletin, along with a comparison among the three crops with respect to irradiation effects.

Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage Originating From The Cecum, C. Grodsinsky, B. E. Brush
Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage Originating From The Cecum, C. Grodsinsky, B. E. Brush
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Six cases are reported of arterio-venous malformations of the cecum presenting with hemorrhage. Newer techniques of diagnosis and management are reviewed. These cases are of interest because of their relative uniqueness and clinical importance. The diagnosis of underlying disease in these cases is often difficult. Massive bleeding, if not controlled, is an indication for immediate operation. Recurrent bleeding, even if previously controlled, can also be considered a surgical indication.

Factors Affecting The Financial Progress Of Dryland Farmers In Central Nebraska, 1924 To 1956, Roger H. Willsie, H. W. Ottoson
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The financial progress of farmers is affected by many factors. Some of these factors were examined for their effects on farmers in the Nebraska Plains-Cornbelt Transition Area. Factors studied were: an index of opportunity to save, size of farm, size of livestock enterprise and education.

Management And Performance Of Swine At Ames Plantation, Everett E. Carrell
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to observe management practices and evaluate performance of straightbred and crossbread swine in the swine research program of the Animal Husbandry-Veterinary Science Department at Ames Plantation, Grand Junction, Tennessee. Data from straightbred Duroc, Hampshire, and Landrace and crossbred H X D and H X P X L pigs farrowed in the fall of 1956 and sold in the spring of 1957 at Ames Plantation were used in this study.
The author observed and assisted in all phases of management and production throughout one season. The management practices used are practical and could be adopted …

Capital Requirements On A Grade A Dairy Farm, Everett E. Carrell
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if it was possible to secure a satisfactory return on capital invested in converting a cotton farm to a modern dairy, cotton, and hog system of farming. One of the eight farm management units located on the Ames Plantation in West Tennessee which was supervised by the University of Tennessee in cooperation with the Hobart Ames Foundation was used in the study. The unit was one formerly rented to a tenant for a standing rent of two bales of cotton. A new farming system was developed providing for a 50-50 sharing of …

Field Experiences With The Division Of Nutrition In The Wisconsin State Board Of Health, Joan Elizabeth Dow
Masters Theses
This report is based upon observations and experiences during a seven weeks' period of field training with the Division of Nutrition in the Wisconsin State Board of Health in Madison, Wisconsin.
The purpose of the field training was to supplement the on-campus academic education in Public Health Nutrition with practical nutrition experiences and observation. More specifically, the purpose was to help the student-nutritionist gain an understanding of the function of a state nutrition staff that works through a decentralized, district organization.
A varied program was planned by the Director of the Division of Nutrition to help the student accomplish these …
A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell
A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell
Doctoral Dissertations
Three of the basic phenomena comprising the meiotic process are synapsis, crossingover, and disjunction. It is generally conceded that some form of pairing must precede crossingover; that the crossingover process occurs prior to disjunction; and that disjunction implies a previous association of elements. Construction of a model describing the causal relations among the three events might be expected to be fairly simple, since the possibilities are limited. Yet, no model has been proposed that is consistent with all the genetic data.
Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin
Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin
Masters Theses
There have been numerous investigations in which reported observations point toward the existence of metabolic interrelationships between tocopherols, the sulfur-containing amino acids, and inorganic sulfur. In previous work, this laboratory has used mixtures partially composed of oxidized casein and casein to produce a protein source having a low methionine content and lending variation with respect to inorganic sulfate. Alpha protein, a purified soybean protein, is characteristically similar to oxidized casein in that both substances have a low sulfur amino acid content. Due to the expenses involved in the laboratory use of oxidized casein, the present investigation was undertaken to determine …
