A Bio-Assay And Histochemical Study Of Antidiuretic Hormone In Normal And Adrenalectomized Rats, Jean Kautz Lauber Nov 1958

A Bio-Assay And Histochemical Study Of Antidiuretic Hormone In Normal And Adrenalectomized Rats, Jean Kautz Lauber

Biology ETDs

The role of neurohypophyseal hormone vasopressin in water and electrolyte regulation has been of interest to both physiologists and clinicians. This interest has been stimulated recently by identification of the chemical structure and synthesis of this polypeptide hormone by duVigneaud and his co-workers, an accomplishment which won for duVigneaud the Nobel Prize in 1955.

Retention And Excretion Of Radionuclides Of The Alkali Metals By Five Mammalian Species, Chester R. Richmond Jun 1958

Retention And Excretion Of Radionuclides Of The Alkali Metals By Five Mammalian Species, Chester R. Richmond

Biology ETDs

Large-volume liquid-scintillation counters were used to measure in vivo the biological half-time (BT1/2), whole-body retention, and excretion of several gamma-emitting alkali-metal radionuclides in five species of animals.

Distribution And Variation Of Chipmunks Of The Eutamias Quadrivittatus Group In New Mexico, Eugene D. Fleharty Jun 1958

Distribution And Variation Of Chipmunks Of The Eutamias Quadrivittatus Group In New Mexico, Eugene D. Fleharty

Biology ETDs

The purpose of this investigation, is to attempt to elucidate the taxonomic relationships between the various populations of the Eutamias quadrivittatus group of chipmunks in New Mexico and some adjacent areas.

A Distributional And Taxonomic Study Of Ratibida Columnifera Var. Columnifera, Ratiba Columnifera Var. Pucherrima, And Their Hybrids In New Mexico, Walter W. Marshall May 1958

A Distributional And Taxonomic Study Of Ratibida Columnifera Var. Columnifera, Ratiba Columnifera Var. Pucherrima, And Their Hybrids In New Mexico, Walter W. Marshall

Biology ETDs

The classification and distribution of Ratibida columnifera var. columnifera Woot. and Standl. and R. columnifera var. pulcherrima (DC.) Woot. and Standl. are complex. Some floras list R. columnifera var. pulcherrima as a purple colored form or variety of the species while other authors refer to this taxon as a separate species of Ratibida. The purpose of this study is to clarify the taxonomic status of the two forms by determining and differences in morphology, distribution, taxonomy, and ecology.

An attempt has been made to determine the route by which R. columnifera columnifera and R. columnifera pulcherrima were distributed. After this …

Use Of The Antibiotics, Streptomycin And Terramycin, As Growth Stimulants For Orchid Seedlings., Margaret W. O'Neill May 1958

Use Of The Antibiotics, Streptomycin And Terramycin, As Growth Stimulants For Orchid Seedlings., Margaret W. O'Neill

Biology ETDs

Antibiotics first came to the public's attention in 1945, when penicillin and streptomycin were released by the United States government to fight human diseases. Later, other antibiotics were released and experimental work was done on control of plant and animal diseases. By 1948 plant pathologists found that certain plant diseases such as walnut blight, tomato and pepper bacterial spot, soft rot, cucumber, downy mildew, chrysanthemum bacterial wilt, and lilac bacterial blight could be controlled by antibiotics.

The Effect Of Adrenalectomy And Cortisone Acetate On Experimental Liver Cancer, Richard A. Heise Feb 1958

The Effect Of Adrenalectomy And Cortisone Acetate On Experimental Liver Cancer, Richard A. Heise

Biology ETDs

An attempt was made in this study to determine the completeness of adrenalectomy and effect in conjunction with cortisone acetate and/or desoxycorticosterone trimethylacetate (DCT) on the development of liver tumors in rats fed 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3'-Me-DAB)

The Effects Of Adrenal Steroids On Electrolyte And Water Balance In Force-Fed Intact Rats., Emma Romero Jan 1958

The Effects Of Adrenal Steroids On Electrolyte And Water Balance In Force-Fed Intact Rats., Emma Romero

Biology ETDs

During the past decade a number of biological and clinical investigations have been concerned with the inhibitory effects of 11-oxy and 17-hydroxy steroids on water and sodium excretion. However, it is recognized by many investigators that such steroids may act either to inhibit or enhance water and sodium excretion, the results obtained depending upon experimental circumstances.

A Survey Of Serum Enzymes As A Possible Index Of Radiation Injury, Lora Belle Hughes Jan 1958

A Survey Of Serum Enzymes As A Possible Index Of Radiation Injury, Lora Belle Hughes

Biology ETDs

Early changes in the serum concentrations of glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, and malic dehydrogenase were determined in young adult rats following exposures to sublethal, midlethal, and supralethal doses of X-irradiation, treatment with hepatotoxic agents or opiates, and sequential administration of both X-irradiation and the hepatotoxins. Changes in serum enzyme content were also determined in a series of 38 rhesus monkeys within 30 minutes after exposure to sublethal doses of fission neutrons.

Relatively small increases in serum enzyme concentration, detectable within 1 to 6 hours after whole body X-irradiation, were greatly exaggerated by prior treatment of the test animals …
