Effect Of Fertilization And Management On The Production Of Bromegrass In Northeast Nebraska, G. W. Rehm, W. J. Moline, E. J. Schwartz, R. S. Moomaw
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
Several experiments were conducted in northeast Nebraska to determine the effect of fertility and management practices on the production of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss). The effectiveness of the various fertilizer treatments was measured in units of dry matter produced per acre as well as beef produced per acre. Results of these studies showed that the production of bromegrass pastures in Nebraska could be markedly improved through proper fertilization.

Since or during the completion of my work on the monographic revision of the genus Perdita, published in seven parts (University of California Publications in Entomology 9:345-432, 11:247-350; 14:303-410, 17:1-156, 28:1-124, 28:125-388, 49: 1-196), much new material has accumulated or has been submitted for study and identification. As a result, I have found it necessary to present this supplementary study, and it is expected that other parts may follow, as the topic is far from exhaustion.
In this part some 64 species are treated, of which 32 are thought to be new, and renewed study has revealed new synonymy …
Telescopic Observation Of The Moon As A Means For Observing Migration Of The Army Cutworm, Chorizagrotis Auxiliaris (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), K. P. Pruess, Neva C. Pruess
Telescopic Observation Of The Moon As A Means For Observing Migration Of The Army Cutworm, Chorizagrotis Auxiliaris (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), K. P. Pruess, Neva C. Pruess
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Nocturnal insect activity was observed through telescopes focused on the moon. Flight direction was computed and methods were developed for estimating height and determining vertical distribution. Total density was correlated with light-trap catches; effective range of a light-trap was about 7 meters. Species identification was impossible but the method was selective for larger and higher-flying insects. Characteristics of insect activity observed during periods of army cutworm abundance indicate that it orients to the west during spring migration. Activity and altitude of flight were modified by wind direction and velocity, but flight direction during migration was independent of wind.

Penstemon In Your Garden, R. D. Uhlinger, G. Viehmeyer
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
A new race of hardy perennials is beginning to appear in American gardens. These are the penstemons, a genus of plants closely related to the familiar snapdragon, which may become important ornamentals as they be come better known to gardeners. The purpose of this bulletin is to show the possibility of the genus as an ornamental and to suggest species and species hybrids of possible value to Great Plains gardeners; to provide information about propagation and culture; and to encourage gardeners to engage in penstemon breeding as an avocation.

Second Specimen Of Oryzomys Dimidiatus, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
Second Specimen Of Oryzomys Dimidiatus, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The species Oryzomys dimidiatus was originally named and described by Thomas (Annals of the Museum of Natural History, series 7, 15: 584-591, 1905) as a member of the genus Nectomys on the basis of a single specimen from the Rio Escondido, 7 miles below Rama, Nicaragua (approximately 1 km. S and 8½ km. E Ranla, 20 m, Zelaya), obtained by W. G. Palmer on November 5, 1904. Although there has been speculation on the relationships of this taxon (currently regarded as the only member of the subgenus Micronectmays, genus Oryzomys--see Hershkovitz, Journal of Mammalogy, 51: 789-794, 1970, …

Influence Of Iron Supply On Peroxidase Activity And Peroxidase Isozymes In Corn (Zea Mays), R. L. Ulmer, Francis A. Haskins, W. R. Akeson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plants of Oh43 X Wf9 corn (Zea mays L.), grown in a sand culture system, were watered daily with nutrient solution containing 0.025, 1.25, or 2.5 ppm Fe. Plants also were grown in a soil-sand mixture. Leaf extracts were assayed quantitatively for peroxidase activity, and samples of the extracts were subjected to gel electrophoresis. A positive relationship was observed between Fe supply and proxidase activity. Numerous peroxidase isozymes were detected by gel electrophoresis. As judged by intensity of the bands, all isozymes appeared to be infIuenced by Fe supply.

The Seasonal Dietary Variation Of The Brook Stickleback (Eucalia Inconsians) In A Southeastern Wisconsin Stream, Roger Hlavek
The Seasonal Dietary Variation Of The Brook Stickleback (Eucalia Inconsians) In A Southeastern Wisconsin Stream, Roger Hlavek
Field Station Bulletins
The inter-relationship between predator and prey is often influenced by the season of the year. This concept has been noted by Hynes (1950) in two species of sticklebacks in England, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and Pygosteus pungitius, while Winn (1960) has reviewed the overall biology of the brook stickleback in Michigan streams. The present study has been undertaken to investigate the seasonal variations in diet exhibited by the brook stickleback.

Some Observations On Corticolous Cryptogams, William J. Woelkerling
Field Station Bulletins
The reliability of direction finding, as stated in the old adage-"moss grows best on the north sides of trees"-is subject to various interpretations. A personal evaluation of the reliability of this adage was attempted in a study of the corticolous cryptogams (non-seed plants which grow on the bark of trees) at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Cedar-Sauk Field Station and adjacent Cedarburg Bog. In this study the trees were inspected not only for the presence of the true mosses but also for algae, fungi, lichens and liverworts. The results summarized in this report are based on observations of over 2000 separate …
Distribution Of Ferns In The Maple-Beech Forest At The Cedar-Sauk Field Station, Theodore E. Carlsen
Distribution Of Ferns In The Maple-Beech Forest At The Cedar-Sauk Field Station, Theodore E. Carlsen
Field Station Bulletins
This report is another in a series of plant studies under investigation at the UWM Cedar-Sauk Field Station. Most of the previous studies were concerned with seed plants and only limited attention was given to the fern flora. In this study, carried out chiefly in the summer of 1970, the fern species were evaluated to determine their importance, distribution and ecological relationships in the maple-beech forest.
Productivity Of An Urban Park, Mary Herte, Nic Kobriger, Forest Stearns
Productivity Of An Urban Park, Mary Herte, Nic Kobriger, Forest Stearns
Field Station Bulletins
We have moderately good knowledge of the yields of crops and of commercial forest land. In contrast, little is known of the productivity of urban park areas. Parks are neither grassland nor forest-in structure they most closely resemble savanna, i.e., grassland spotted with trees bearing large crowns. How much energy is trapped by these communities? How much oxygen is liberated? What are the water requirements and recharge potentials of such areas? How can vegetation be best managed to promote the aesthetic and recreational needs of the urban citizen-and at the same time maintain its vital function as a living filter? …

An Investigation Into Possible Problems Arising From Repeal Of The Personal Property Tax In South Dakota, Ardelle Lundeen, Allyn O. Lockner
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
There is considerable pressure in South Dakota, as in many states at the present time, for tax relief or tax reform. Much of this concern is directed toward the type of taxes that most local governments and school districts rely on for the major portion of their operating funds. In South Dakota property taxes account for about 69 percent of local government revenue compared to a national average of 45 percent(1). As costs of government continue to rise, the burden on property owners becomes more onerous. The search for means of relief for the property owner continues. One method that …
Weaning Age And Management Systems For Fall Born Beef Calves, William Mccone
Weaning Age And Management Systems For Fall Born Beef Calves, William Mccone
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971
Twenty-eight registered Angus and Hereford cows calved in September, 1970. The cows calved on pasture and remained on pasture until late November. From November 10 to December 28 the cows were bred for 1971 and started on a self-fed diet. The remaining 14, or one-half of the calves, were allowed to continue nursing the cows, but the calves also had access to calf creep with the same diet used for the weaned calves. At the start of the experiment the calves were randomly divided by sex, breed and age. At this time, December 30, 1970, the average age of all …

Drought-Damaged Corn Silage For Growing Beef Calves, Richard M. Luther, Jacob Fredrikson
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971
One hundred thirty-six steer calves averaging 440 lb. were used in a 56-day trial to study the value of supplementing drought-damaged corn silage with protein and energy. The silage contained only about 8 bushels of grain per acre and was harvested in mid-August at 30% dry matter. It was stored in a 71-ton stack, covered with a plastic cover and sealed with earth around the bottom. The stack was opened with a plastic cover and sealed with earth around the bottom. The nitrogen (dry basis) were 11.7 and 0.24 at ensiling. The four treatments (34 steers each) were 1 or …
Levels Of Diethylstilbestrol And Types Of Protein Supplements In Ground Ear Corn Diets For Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry
Levels Of Diethylstilbestrol And Types Of Protein Supplements In Ground Ear Corn Diets For Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971
Results of numerous experiments have shown that diethylstilbestrol at 10 mg. daily in the feed of implanted at 30 to 36 mg. improves weight gains and feed efficiency of feedlot cattle. More recently it has been reported that feeding more than 10 mg. daily to heavier cattle results in further stimulation of weight gains and feed efficiency. Feeding of 20 mg. per head daily of diethylstilbestrol is now cleared for feedlot cattle above 750 lb.
