Evaluation Of Statistical Protocols For Quality Control Of Ecosystem Carbon Dioxide Fluxes, Jorge F. Perez-Quezada, Nicanor Z. Saliendra, William E. Emmerich, Emilio A. Laca

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

The process of quality control of micrometeorological and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux data can be subjective and may lack repeatability, which would undermine the results of many studies. Multivariate statistical methods and time series analysis were used together and independently to detect and replace outliers in CO2 flux data derived from a Bowen ratio energy balance system.

Ecosystem Management Decision Support (Emds) Applied To Watershed Assessment On California’S North Coast, Rich Walker, Chris Keithley, Russ Henly, Scott Downie, Steve Cannata

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

In 2001, the state of California initiated the North Coast Watershed Assessment Program (2003a) to assemble information on the status of coastal watersheds that have historically supported anadromous fish. The five-agency consortium explored the use of Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) (Reynolds and others 1996) as a means to help assess overall watershed and in-stream conditions for fish. EMDS is expert system software developed by the USDA Forest Service for similar efforts with the Northwest Forest Plan (2000). NCWAP developed models to help assess key watershed characteristics that contribute to shaping channel morphology and to evaluate the present stream habitat …

Tree Identification And Age Project, Mark Jensen Jan 2007

Tree Identification And Age Project, Mark Jensen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the Tree Identification and Age Project is to use authentic learning activities to extend the current curriculum to include learning that takes place at high levels of cognition. The methods employed integrate higher-order thinking into learning through a hands-on, problem-based approach to authentic scientific investigation. Using a problem-based approach, the learners apply knowledge and skills to solve real problems. The process involves focusing on the problem, identifying relative information, categorizing, critically analyzing, synthesizing that information and effectively communicating the results.

Fire Prevention On The Farm And Ranch What Every Country Homeowner Needs To Know About Fire!, Bob Vogltance, Larry Wiles, Jeff Bassett

Nebraska Forest Service: Publications

Farm and ranch families have always been concerned with fire. Long distances from fire departments result in longer emergency response times. The lack of adequate water for fire fighting is another common problem. These two factors combine to make fire on the farm or ranch extremely costly and potentially dangerous.

America’s rural residents are ¼ of the nation’s population living on 98 percent of the land. Rural residents must give fire prevention first priority in protecting their homes, families and businesses.

Fire prevention on the farm or ranch starts with YOU.

Communication among managers, the public, and scientists is the key to successful ecosystem management; however, the varied perspectives and interests of these groups can make such communication difficult. One way to achieve effective communication is to develop a common knowledge base by combining syntheses of key scientific results with information-rich visual elements. Within a management landscape, integrated environmental assessments provide a useful framework for evaluating resources and directing management efforts. The integrated assessment process involves (1) initial investigation, (2) development of a conceptual framework, (3) data navigation, (4) environmental report cards, and (5) science communication. Each step requires the synthesis …

Past, Present, And Future Old Growth In Frequent-Fire Conifer Forests Of The Western United States, Scott R. Abella, W. Wallace Covington, Peter Z. Fule, Leigh B. Lentile, Andrew J. Sanchez Meador, Penelope Morgan

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

Old growth in the frequent-fire conifer forests of the western United States, such as those containing ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), Jeffrey pine (P. jeffreyi), giant sequoia (Sequioa giganteum) and other species, has undergone major changes since Euro-American settlement. Understanding past changes and anticipating future changes under different potential management scenarios are fundamental to developing ecologically based fuel reduction or ecological restoration treatments. Some of the many changes that have occurred in these forests include shifts from historically frequent surface fire to no fire or to stand-replacing fire regimes, increases in tree density, increased abundance of fire-intolerant trees, decreases in understory …
