Vertebrate Natural History Notes From Arkansas, 2019, C. Renn Tumlison, Chris Mcallister, Henry Robison, Matt Connior, Ron Redman, Stan Trauth, Paul Port

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Important observations of natural history often go unreported because they are not part of larger studies, but small details can provide insights that lead to interesting questions about ecological relationships or environmental change. We have compiled recent important observations of distribution, deformities, foods, parasites, and reproduction of various vertebrates. Included are a new record of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), a new size record of mudpuppy (Necturus louisianensis), and a second observation of bilateral gynandromorphism in a Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). These unique observations continue to grow knowledge of vertebrate biology in Arkansas.

Revision Of The Taxonomic Status Of Rhodanthidium Sticticum Ordonezi (Dusmet, 1915), An Anthidiine Bee Endemic To Morocco (Apoidea: Anthidiini), Max Kasparek, Patrick Lhomme

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Rhodanthidium ordonezi (Dusmet, 1815) is recognized here as a valid species endemic to central and southern Morocco. It has previously been regarded as a subspecies of R. sticticum (Fabricius). The two taxa are in allopatry throughout most of their respective ranges, but probably cooccur in the Middle Atlas Mountains. They are clearly distinguished by their coloration and some aspects of their color patterns. Structural differences are minor, but a multivariate discriminant function analysis of 11 morphometric traits has showed that these are sufficient to assign 82.7% of all specimens correctly. While R. ordonezi has a restricted range in central and …

A Review Of Current Knowledge Concerning The Breeding And Summer Distribution Of The Cordilleran Flycatcher (Empidonax Occidentalis) In Mexico, Harold F. Greeney, Matthew J. Miller, Charles Van Riper Iii

Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University

The Cordilleran Flycatcher (Empidonax occidentalis) is one of many North American birds whose distribution crosses the US–Mexican border and for which little is presently known about summer distribution and breeding biology south of this border. In addition, the Cordilleran Flycatcher presents ornithologists with a number of challenging questions surrounding its taxonomy, migration, distribution, population structure, and species limits. In particular, there remains a good deal of uncertainty concerning the species-level relationships, seasonal movements, and the wintering and breeding distributions of both recognized subspecies of Cordilleran Flycatcher in Mexico. Using field observations, a thorough review of the literature, and …

Update Of Distribution Of The Chestnut Lamprey In Arkansas, Jeremiah Salinger, Ronald L. Johnson, Brian Wagner Jan 2018

Update Of Distribution Of The Chestnut Lamprey In Arkansas, Jeremiah Salinger, Ronald L. Johnson, Brian Wagner

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Most lamprey species other than sea lampreys have been poorly studied in North America. The chestnut lamprey, Ichthyomyzon castaneus, has a distribution within the Mississippi River and Hudson Bay drainage systems, and the Great Lakes. Since the text Fishes of Arkansas was published in 1988, few papers have been published to update the statewide distribution of this lamprey. We incorporated our electrofishing sampling results with gray and published literature to describe the distribution of this species in the drainage basins of the State of Arkansas. Reported are records of 250 chestnut lamprey specimens, over a 90 year period, from …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Because meaningful observations of natural history are not always part of larger studies, important pieces of information often are unreported. Small details, however, can fill gaps in understanding and lead to interesting questions about ecological relationships or environmental change. We have compiled recent important observations of distribution, deformities, and foods of various vertebrates, observations of winter activity of a woodchuck (Marmota monax) and winter torpor of a hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), and also report a very unusual case of bilateral gynandromorphism in a Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). These unique observations continue to add immensely to …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Heterandria Formosa (Teleostei, Poeciliidae) In Lowndes County, Georgia, Jason C. Chaney, David L. Bechler

Georgia Journal of Science

Heretofore in the literature, Heterandria formosa had not been reported from Lowndes County, Georgia. Based on a survey of Lowndes County; we discovered eight localities from the southeastern portion of the county that collectively produced 30 specimens of H. formosa. The southeastern portion of the county is primarily flatwoods with numerous wetlands and low gradient streams compared to the remainder of the county, which is typified by a more upland habitat with greater relief and greater stream gradients. It is postulated that the greater stream gradients inhibited the migration of H. formosa into the southwestern and northern portions of …

A Redescription Of The First Instar Of Rhantus Calidus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) With Notes On Its Biology, B. R. Lemieux, E. H. Barman, B. P. White

Georgia Journal of Science

First instars of Rhantus calidus (Fabricius) representing a Georgia population are described and illustrated. Dimensions are provided along with an analysis of the primary chaetotaxy of legs, head, and last abdominal segment. The presence of first instars at the study site demonstrated that R. calidus either requires or is at least tolerant of warmer temperatures for completion of its life cycle. Habitats with temperatures comparable to this site were likely present in a warm Atlantic coastal enclave during the last glacial maximum (LGM), making it probable that the LGM dytiscid fauna of Georgia included R. calidus.
