Body Shape Divergence In Invasive Round Goby, Cat Collins Jun 2014

Body Shape Divergence In Invasive Round Goby, Cat Collins

DePaul Discoveries

The round goby, Neogobius melanostomus, originally native to the Black and Caspian seas, was introduced into the Great Lakes via ballast water in the 1990’s. Since then, the species has spread to all of the Great Lakes, thriving in the Lake Michigan region and spreading to surrounding bays and rivers. Invasive species are considered to have a high evolutionary potential. Differences in environmental conditions between native and introduced ranges stimulate adaptive evolution. Multiple introductions of an exotic species can result in separate instances of founder effects, further increasing the chance of evolutionary change. A total of 267 round goby specimens …

Herpetofauna Of The Vicinity Of Akşehir And Eber (Konya, Afyon), Turkey, Durmuş Ci̇han, Cemal Varol Tok Jan 2014

Herpetofauna Of The Vicinity Of Akşehir And Eber (Konya, Afyon), Turkey, Durmuş Ci̇han, Cemal Varol Tok

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this research, 29 species of 11 amphibian and reptile families were detected in the endorheic basin of Akşehir and Eber. Of these species, 5 are anurans, 1 is a tortoise, 1 is a turtle, 9 are lizards, and 13 are snakes. In addition, the chorotype classification of the species recorded in the study area and their distributions depending on plants are also provided. It was established that specimens of subspecies Ophisops elegans macrodactylus and O. e. centralanatolia were sympatrically found in the vicinity of Ortaköy and Tuzlukçu. Moreover, in addition to the species determined in previous studies, Platyceps najadum …

Campanula Alisan-Kilincii (Campanulaceae), A New Species From Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Hasan Yildirim, Serdar Gökhan Şenol Jan 2014

Campanula Alisan-Kilincii (Campanulaceae), A New Species From Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Hasan Yildirim, Serdar Gökhan Şenol

Turkish Journal of Botany

Campanula alisan-kilincii Yıldırım & Şenol (Campanulaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Malatya Province in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The new species belongs to the section Rupestres, based on morphological features. It is morphologically similar to Campanula quercetorum and C. strigillosa but clearly differs from them based on the morphological differences presented in the species description. In addition, the conservation status, the distribution map, and notes on the biogeography and ecology of the new species are given.

Ecology And Allelopathic Control Of Brassica Tournefortii In Reclaimed Areas Of The Nile Delta, Egypt, Ahmed Mohamed Abd El-Gawad Jan 2014

Ecology And Allelopathic Control Of Brassica Tournefortii In Reclaimed Areas Of The Nile Delta, Egypt, Ahmed Mohamed Abd El-Gawad

Turkish Journal of Botany

Land reclamation causes weedy species to replace wild plant species. The present study characterizes the community of Brassica tournefortii Gouan in reclaimed areas of the Nile Delta of Egypt to determine its ecological amplitude, soil factors controlling its distribution, and its allelopathic control. The plant communities dominated by B. tournefortii were investigated in 60 sites. The importance value of each species based on cover and density was determined. Data were treated by multivariate analyses. Soils representing each community were analyzed. The allelopathic effects of Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronquist, Trianthema portulacastrum L., and Pulicaria undulata (L.) C.A.Mey. and their mixtures on …

Reseda Malatyana (Resedaceae), A New Chasmophytic Species From Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Hasan Yildirim, Serdar Gökhan Şenol Jan 2014

Reseda Malatyana (Resedaceae), A New Chasmophytic Species From Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Hasan Yildirim, Serdar Gökhan Şenol

Turkish Journal of Botany

Reseda malatyana Yıldırım & Şenol (Resedaceae) is illustrated and described as a new species to science, endemic to eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Reseda malatyana is related to Reseda armena Boiss. It differs from Reseda armena by the following characters: densely smaller, unbranched at the upper part, papillate-hispidulous stems; dark green, thicker, and densely papillate-hispidulous leaves; bigger petals; smaller pedicels; relatively smaller with sinus seeds; oblate-spheroidal, tricolporate, and rugulate pollen grains. R. malatyana is a perennial species that colonizes on marlstone rocky cliffs, known from a single locality in Levent Canyon, located in Malatya Province. It is an obligated chasmophytic species. In …

Taxonomy, Distribution, And Ecology Of Crustacean Zooplankton In Trough Waters Of Ankara (Turkey), Eli̇f Başak, Cem Aygen, Okan Külköylüoğlu Jan 2014

Taxonomy, Distribution, And Ecology Of Crustacean Zooplankton In Trough Waters Of Ankara (Turkey), Eli̇f Başak, Cem Aygen, Okan Külköylüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Troughs are one of the main components of villages in Turkey. They are constructed by converting springs or underground waters. Until now, there has been no extensive study investigating the composition and diversity of trough zooplankton species. In order to contribute knowledge on the zooplanktons in troughs, 142 troughs were randomly sampled from 17 districts in Ankara Province between 22 June and 3 July 2011. A total of 18 zooplanktons including 11 Copepoda and 7 Cladocera species were determined. Twelve of the 18 (Paracyclops chiltoni, Paracylops fimbriatus, Paracyclops imminutus, Tropocyclops prasinus, Diacyclops bisetosus, Acanthocyclops vernalis, Canthocamptus staphylinus, Attheyella crassa, Bryocamptus …

Breeding Ecology And Behaviour Of The Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus Arundinaceus, In Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey, Ali̇ Uzun, Zehra Ayyildiz, Faruk Yilmaz, Belgi̇n Uzun, Mehmet Sağiroğlu Jan 2014

Breeding Ecology And Behaviour Of The Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus Arundinaceus, In Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey, Ali̇ Uzun, Zehra Ayyildiz, Faruk Yilmaz, Belgi̇n Uzun, Mehmet Sağiroğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the breeding ecology and behaviour of the Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, was studied at Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey. The breeding period started in the first week of May. The incubation period lasted 14 days. As clutch size increased, the diameter of the nests became larger (r = 0.65). Diameters of nests containing different clutch sizes varied significantly from one another (P < 0.01). However, their height did not change (r = 0.24). There was no significant height difference between nests containing different clutch sizes (P > 0.05). As the nests became farther from the shore, the clutch size and the egg weight increased, because mature adults built their nests on the reeds in deeper areas (r = 0.59, r = 0.73). On …
