Wolf Reintroduction Into Yellowstone National Park, Erin Quartley

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

" ... My, what big eyes you have grandmother. 'All the better to see you with, my dear.' My, what big teeth you have grandmother. 'All the better to eat you with, my dear. ' ... " The story of Little Red Riding Hood is one that commonly surfaces when people talk about and picture wolves. The negative image that has been placed upon wolves originates from folklore, fairy tales, and Hollywood. This same falsified image is one that has greatly contributed to the past and present plight of …

Botany Of Desire: Looking At The Rose Plant As A Manmade Tool Of Love, Taylor Aaserud Apr 2013

Botany Of Desire: Looking At The Rose Plant As A Manmade Tool Of Love, Taylor Aaserud

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

The use of roses as a symbol of emotion (specifically love) and as a result, a model of artificial selection, is rarely questioned. These plants share a rich history with multiple humanities around the world and have been a subject of genetic interest to see exactly what genes are being expressed that signal those beautiful desirable traits. To answer the question of “why” these plants have been a vector for human love for so long, I have analyzed 7 articles, one of them outlining the cause of the favored “double flower” mutation found in so many modern roses today. Upon …

Determination Of Lead Levels In Soil And Plant Uptake Studies, Amanda Lewis Apr 2013

Determination Of Lead Levels In Soil And Plant Uptake Studies, Amanda Lewis

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

Lead poisoning is a problem for many urban areas and Rochester is no exception. The large number of older homes and high traffic areas of a city as large as Rochester create a city with a high potential for lead poisoning. This paper presents research in which the soil from Rochester area homes was tested for lead content. The samples were digested using EPA Method 3050B section 7.5 and analyzed for lead by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The majority of the houses were found to have concentrations …

Heme Oxygnase-1 Produced By A Human Monocytic Cell Line (U-937) After Exposure To Brevetoxin (Pbtx-2), Carolyn Fisher, Catherine Walsh, Stephanie Legget Apr 2013

Heme Oxygnase-1 Produced By A Human Monocytic Cell Line (U-937) After Exposure To Brevetoxin (Pbtx-2), Carolyn Fisher, Catherine Walsh, Stephanie Legget

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) along the west coast of Florida are the result of a large proliferation of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis. The harmful nature of these algal blooms is the result of potent neurotoxins, specifically referred to as brevetoxins, which are released from K. brevis. PbTx-2 is one of the most abundant brevetoxins during HABs of K brevis and results in extreme mortality of marine wildlife and health implications for humans such as Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP) and immunosuppression. The cellular response to PbTx-2 is not …

The Telomere And Telomerase Activity, Kerrie Conwell Mar 2013

The Telomere And Telomerase Activity, Kerrie Conwell

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.

In the past few years, a new area of genetics has emerged that has scientists in many other fields intrigued. The discovery of telomeres, the end segments on our chromosomes, and the enzyme that controls them, has evoked an interest in professionals from a wide range of specialties. Articles on the subject have appeared in journals of cell and molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, gerontology, and have even surfaced in the popular media. There is already a wealth of information to be found on the topic, yet there is many …
