The Evolving International Grassland Congress, L R. Humphreys
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The locations of the International Grassland Congresses are listed. Analysis of the disciplinary themes of papers presented at five Congresses from 1937 to 1993 indicated a considerable homeostasis of content. The plant genetic base for grassland improvement received most attention, and this, together with plant physiology, plant ecology and soil science contributed 52 to 57 per cent of the subject matter at all five Congresses. Emergent topics are mentioned.

"Monotypic: Evolution and Adaptations of the World’s Most Distinctive Species" is a BFA and Honors Capstone exhibition focused on introducing the public to the unique qualities of plants and animals that are the sole extant representative of their taxonomic family or higher classification. The exhibition is centered around the use of illustrative infographics to effectively deliver scientific information in an engaging manner to a wide audience. A complex segregating mixture of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), was sown in 1978 at Nabawa and Mt Barker, two contrasting sites in Western Australia. Seed harvested from both sites from 1980-1994 was grown out at Shenton Park in 1995, along with seed of the original mixture. Populations diverged markedly for mean days to first flowering (DFF) within three seasons. No further trends in mean DFF occurred in plants derived from the next 14 years, although standard deviation declined significantly in plants from Mt Barker. Between season differences in mean DFF were correlated with estimated growing season length at …

Relationships Among Some Lolium And Festuca Species, G Charmet, F Balfourier, C Ravel

Molecular markers were used to investigate phylogenetic relationships among the 8 species of ryegrass (Lolium) and 11 species of fescue (Festuca). Nine sequences of non-coding chloroplastic or mitochondrial DNA were amplified through PCR, then digested by 20 restriction enzymes. Restriction sites data were used to draw an UPGMA tree. The main features are: 1) a clear-cut distinction between fine-leaved fescues (subg. Festuca) and broad-leaved fescues (subg. Schedonorus), which include the ryegrasses. 2) among the broad-leaved fescues, meadow fescue and tall fescue are very closely related, which may indicate that they share a common maternal …

During the long period of co-evolution with herbivores, range plants have adapted and developed resistant mechanisms in response to grazing (Briske, 1991). NQO1 and NQO2 are closely related quinone reductases, which are FAD-linked enzymes that catalyze the 2-electron reduction of quinones. Whereas NQO1 has a well-defined role in cellular detoxification of quinones, NQO2’s function is less clear; it uses the conventional cofactors NADH/NADPH inefficiently compared to smaller nicotinamide cofactors, which are often present in low cellular amounts. This unique cofactor specificity suggests that NQO2 may have non-enzymatic functions, such as a role in intracellular signalling.
The goals of this research project include: 1) examining whether cofactor specificity is conserved in amniote NQO2 enzymes and 2) re-constructing ancient enzymes along the evolutionary pathway …

As technology and medicine flourish in 21st century America through science, so does fear and opposition. This fear and opposition stems from the lack of an individuals understanding or education in the scientific field; simply called “Scientific Illiteracy”. Pressing issues involved with scientific illiteracy include vaccination, climate change, and evolution. Through extensive research in reading scientific papers, political pieces, statistics, and referencing other’s expertise, the culprits of this phenomenon prove to surpass just a lack of scientific education. Microbes have served as effective models for studying evolution because of their ability to be easily replicated, stored, and manipulated. Myxococcus xanthus is a soil bacterium that has served as a model organism in many laboratories. The unique social and motile behaviors exhibited by this bacterium make it ideal for phenotypic assays. A wild-type strain of M. xanthus, DK1622, has been distributed to laboratories across the United States and therefore we now have DK1622 sublines. The genomes of a number of these sublines have been sequenced and their social and motile phenotypes have been analyzed. When nine of these sublines …
