Gender-Based Differences In Stride And Limb Dimensions Between Healthy Red-Wing Tinamou (Rhynchotus Rufescens) Temminck, 1815, Sandra Aidar De Queiroz, Ross Gordon Cooper

The red-wing tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) is economically important as food. The current study investigated the limb and trunk characteristics in age-matched [year-of-hatch (yoh) 2004 and 2005], gender segregated birds, and determined differences in stride between cocks and hens. The locomotion trial was completed in a corridor of 0.6 × 2.36 m dimension. The girth was significantly higher in cocks than in hens, while body weight was slightly higher in hens. The rectal sac (Rs) is formed by enlargement of the rectal portion of the hindgut in Bombyx mori. The Rs consists of epithelium, connective tissue, and many rectal pads (Rps). Rps have a cortex and medulla. In the medulla 2-5 pyramidal epithelial cells synthesize proteinic secretory material (Ps), and then this substance localizes within epithelial cells and connective tissue. In recent years, Alata beach has been considered to be among 20 important sea turtle nesting areas in Turkey. In the 2003 nesting season, the carapacial scute variation of 1086 Chelonia mydas hatchlings (169 dead and 917 live) and 394 Caretta caretta hatchlings (74 dead and 320 live) from Alata beach in Mersin, Turkey, were examined within carapacial scute series and in carapacial scute pattern. Mole rats have adapted to living underground and have a wide range chromosomal variation in Turkey, ranging between 2n = 36 and 2n = 60. This study was performed on the subterranean mole rats of the Nannospalax nehringi (Nehring, 1898), sampled around Çankırı and Çorum provinces in central Anatolia, and the karyotypes of 91 specimens across 38 localities were analyzed. Comparison Of Skeletal Muscle Protein Bands And Trunk Vertebrae Count Between Ommatotriton Ophryticus Nesterovi And O. O. Ophryticus Populations In Turkey, Bi̇lal Kutrup, Ufuk Bülbül

Skeletal muscle was investigated by SDS-PAGE protein electrophoresis for western versus eastern Turkish populations of the newt Ommatotriton ophryticus. The number of protein bands resolved was 25 in the west and 26 in the east. The modal number of trunk vertebrae was also compared among 10 populations of the eastern group (Artvin, Trabzon, Giresun, and Ordu) and 3 populations of the western group (Zonguldak, Bartın, and Karabük). The eastern group had 13 vertebrae except Şinik (Trabzon) specimens, which had 14 vertebrae, whereas the western group had 12 vertebrae. Haemopoietic tissues of the head kidney of Clarias batrachus were studied for morphometric analysis and ultrastructural descriptions of the erythropoietic and leucopoietic cell populations. Eight successive steps of developing erythrocytes from small lymphoid haemoblasts (SLHs) to mature erythrocytes (MEs) were distinguished. Progressive loss of RNA and synthesis of haemoglobin during haemopoiesis were coupled with denser nucleus and changes in cellular shapes. Transmission electron microscopy aided in clear distinction between cell lineages in the development of erythrocytes, granulocytes, and lymphocytes. The present study describes breeding and wintering abundances, distributions, and seasonal occurrences of shorebirds (waders) in the Gediz Delta (İzmir-Turkey). Breeding abundance and distribution, and wintering abundance data were collected by carrying out breeding bird surveys in 2002 and 2006, and waterbird censuses between 1990 and 2007, respectively. Seasonal occurrences were determined using 432 different observations corresponding to 5043 different records between 1990 and 2007. Thirty-eight wader species were observed with a weekly average of 22.5 ± 4.0. Breeding evidence was obtained for 9 species in 2002 and 8 species in 2006. This study is based upon material of family Pompilidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 2000 and 2009; the other related studies on the Pompilidae in Turkey were reviewed. Dicyrtomellus kizilkumii (Radoszkowski, 1877) is a new record for Turkish fauna. The authors present also an updated checklist of the Pompilidae fauna of Turkey. Including the new taxon determined in this study a total of 200 species and 5 subspecies from 35 genera of the family Pompilidae were recorded from Turkey to date. Maximum Swimming Speed Predictions For Mullus Barbatus (Linnaeus, 1758) And Diplodus Annularis (Linnaeus, 1758), Hüseyi̇n Özbi̇lgi̇n, Murat Pehli̇van, Fati̇h Başaran

Maximum swimming speed of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) and annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis) was estimated based on muscle twitch experiments. The maximum estimated speed of red mullet (mean length: 16.9 cm) was 3.14 m/s (18.6 bl/s) at 26 °C. At 20 °C the maximum estimated speed of annular sea bream (mean length: 11.5 cm) was 1.92 m/s (16.7 bl/s). Maximum swimming speed of annular sea bream decreased as the temperature decreased.

This study is based on the G-banding karyotype of 2 sibling bat species Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) (Greater Mouse-eared Myotis) and M. blythii (Tomes, 1857) (Lesser Mouse-eared Myotis) distributed in Turkey. G-banding karyotypes showed that the 2 taxa possessed identical G-banded chromosome arms. It was concluded that G-banded chromosomes are not sufficient as a diagnostic character for separating M. myotis from M. blythii.

The structure and function of different cells lining the olfactory epithelium in Terapon jarbua (Forsskål, 1775) were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The olfactory rosette is oval in structure and consists of 18-20 primary lamellae arranged on a median raphe. A large part of the lateral surface of the olfactory lamella is covered with nonreceptor epithelium, whereas the receptor epithelium occupies the middle region. The sensory receptor epithelium is made up of receptor cells, rod cells, microvillar cells, labyrinth cells, and mucous cells. The Reproductive Performance Of Wild And Hatchery-Reared Flounder, Platichthys Flesus Luscus, In The Southern Black Sea Coast, İlhan Aydin, Temel Şahi̇n, Hamza Polat, Erdi̇nç Güneş

The spawning period, total fecundity, egg size, and fertilization and hatching rates of wild and hatchery-reared flounder, Platichthys flesus luscus, are investigated in this report. Wild and hatchery-reared broodstock consisted of 18 females (452.8 ± 193.2 g) and 17 females (138.9 ± 47.4 g), respectively. The spawning period lasted 79 days, from 22 January to 10 April. Mean total fecundity was 285 ± 157.9 × 10^3 per female for wild broodstock while it was 115.6 ± 53.6 × 10^3 eggs for hatchery-reared broodstock. This study was designed to characterize the growth parameters of the albacore, Thunnus alalunga, in the eastern Mediterranean. A total of 819 albacore specimens were collected from gillnet boats operating in Antalya Bay (in the Levantine Sea) between May and July from 2006 to 2008. Individuals were all between 55 and 101 cm in fork length (FL). The fork length was directly proportional to weight, with a relationship of W = 0.00042FL^{2.246} for females, W = 0.00022FL^{2.396} for males, and W = 0.00016FL^{2.467} for males and females combined. Age estimations were made using otolith length and weight measurements from 3 goby species in the central Aegean Sea: the four-spotted goby (Deltentosteus quadrimaculatus Valenciennes, 1837), the black goby (Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758), and Fries's goby (Lesueurigobius friesii Malm, 1874). A total of 266 individual four-spotted gobies, 283 black gobies, and 124 Fries's gobies provided otolith samples for analysis. The present study reports on the zooplankton community in Liman Lake based on field studies carried out between October 2002 and March 2004. A total of 35 zooplankton taxa, belonging to Rotifera (28), Cladocera (5), and Copepoda (2), were identified. Rotifera was the dominant group in all sampling surveys and accounted for 97% of the zooplankton density in the lake. The average total zooplankton abundance ranged from 993 to 476,912 ind/m3. The quantitative and qualitative fatty acid compositions of phospholipid and neutral lipid were investigated and compared for specimens of the freshwater mussel Unio elongatulus. Samples were collected from 4 different localities in Turkey: Çağçağ Brook in Nusaybin (Mardin), Fabrika Brook in Çınar (Diyarbakır), the Tigris River under the Sadi Bridge (Diyarbakır), and Kırkçeşme Spring in Sultanköy (Mardin). The aim of this study was to learn the invasion speed and sex ratio, which would be indicative of invasive character, of a nonnative fish species, gibel carp, by reporting its new localities in the Marmara region of northwestern Turkey. Pseudophoxinus firati Bogutskaya, Küçük & Atalay, 2007 (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) living in the Euphrates River system were analyzed in terms of their karyotype, C-banding, and nucleolus organizer region properties. Metaphase chromosome spreads were obtained from kidney cells. The diploid chromosome number was found to be 2n = 50, of which 19 pairs were meta-submetacentric and 6 pairs were subtelocentric, and the fundamental number was found to be 88. No sex chromosome differentiation was observed. C-banding revealed heterochromatin in the pericentromeric regions of 6 pairs of chromosomes. A total of 65 individuals from 3 different fish species, Capoeta antalyensis (n: 15), Aphanius mento (n: 29), and Pseudophoxinus battalgil (n: 21), were examined for helminth parasites (Nemathelminthes) between May and July of 2009. A total of 123 parasites of 3 species were found in these fish, consisting of 3 nematodes: Rhabdochona denudata, Eustrongylides excisus larvae, and Contracaecum sp. larvae. Among these species, R. denudata was recorded in the intestine of C. antalyensis, with a total of 92 parasites found in 13 of the 15 C. antalyensis examined. The amphibian and reptile specimens, crushed due to vehicle traffic, were recorded during herpetological trips to various regions of Anatolia between 2005 and 2009. In total, 183 individuals were detected, representing 28 species from 4 amphibian [Salamandridae (1), Ranidae (3), Bufonidae (2), and Hylidae (2)], 3 turtle [Testudinidae (1), Emydidae (1), and Geoemydidae (2)], 3 lizard [Agamidae (1), Anguidae (2), and Lacertidae (5)] and 2 snake [Colubridae (6) and Viperidae (2)] families. The measures required for decreasing herpetofaunal mortalities due to traffic are emphasized.

The objective of this study was to determine esterase enzyme polymorphism in 16 natural Musca domestica L. populations from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions of Turkey by using the native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique. The high level of genetic variation among populations and species make esterase enzymes an important tool for analyzing genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships in insects. Roosting Of Tree Sparrow (Passer Montanus) And House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus) In White Stork (Ciconia Ciconia) Nests During Winter, Marcin Tobolka

Presented are the results of a preliminary study on wintering and roosting sparrows in white stork nests. The study was conducted in the winters of 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 in the agricultural landscape of western Poland. Wintering sparrows occupied 71% of the white stork nests on at least 1 visit; tree sparrows occurred in 27% of the nests at least once and house sparrows occurred in 66% of the nests at least once. Acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis specimens are reported in Alburnus baliki and Capoeta antalyensis caught between May and July of 2009 in streams discharging into Antalya Bay. The total prevalence rate for P. laevis was 78.5% and 60% in A. baliki and C. antalyensis, respectively. A total of 28 A. baliki were caught, and 74 P. laevis were recorded in 22 of the 28 fish examined. Microphthalma europaea Egger (Diptera: Tachinidae) is recorded as a parasitoid of the last instar larvae of Polyphylla fullo (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). The adult male and female were used for identification, and this is the first known record of this species in Turkey. This is also a first report of a tachinid obtained from scarabaeid larvae in Turkey.

The genus Bilusius Ribaut, 1942 includes 3 species; 2 are from the Pyrenees and 1 is from the Caucasus (Georgia). This study reports both the genus Bilusius and the species Bilusius valiko Logvinenko, 1974, which are recorded here for the first time from Turkey. This species is redescribed and figured by examination of specimens collected from northeastern Turkey.

Zelleria oleastrella (Milliere), a monophagous pest on olive trees, was recorded for the first time in Turkey. The pest was collected from olive orchards in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey in 2008 and 2009. Its general distribution is presented.

In this study, 29 reptile and amphibian species were recorded in 25 different localities in the Sultan Mountains. Of these, 5 were anurans, 1 was a tortoise, 1 was a turtle, 11 were lizards, and 11 were snakes. A chorotype classification of the species recorded in the Sultan Mountains is also given.

The Ornithological Importance Of Dalaman (Muğla, Turkey) Wetlands And Threats To The Bird Population, Azi̇z Aslan, Yakup Kaska, Ali̇ Erdoğan

The study, conducted from May 2002 to December 2004, aimed to provide scientific baseline data about avifaunal richness, species of breeding birds, and threats that affect both bird species and ecosystems, and to support attempts to get official protection status for the Dalaman (Muğla, Turkey) wetlands. A total of 215 bird species were recorded using point counts throughout transect lines. The species' statuses were determined as follows: 56 residents, 78 summer visitors, 44 winter visitors, 22 passage migrants, and 15 undetermined. Of the 215 species, 93 (43%) were non-breeders.
