Monitoring of the lower Chesapeake Bay zooplankton populations was begun in March 1978 to provide a data base needed as a prerequisite to future evaluations of faunal change. An initial report (Grant and Olney, 1979) presented the basic design and sampling techniques of the Lower Bay Zooplankton Program (LBZMP), along with results of the first winter-spring cruise.

These surveys are conducted during four months of the year, with complete taxonomic analysis in March and August and analyses limited to meroplanktonic fish eggs and larvae and decapod crustacean larvae tn June and July. The present report includes results of the summer …

This report aims to provide new information that meets selected objectives of the EPA-States Taxies Plan of Action: i.e. (1) to determine the state of the Bay with respect to the distribution and concentration of selected metals in suspended material and fluid mud; (2) to establish the temooral variations of sediment and metal loading: (3) to identify potential zones of metal accumulation and trace their transport routes, and (4) to provide recommendations for monitoring contaminated sediment.

The James River is the primary source of seed oysters for planting private beds in the Chesapeake Bay. A sharp decline in setting rates after 1960 accompanied cessation of oyster culture on private beds in the lower sector of the river. These broodstocks were eliminated and the beds were barren after 1960. High salinities permitted a new oyster disease caused by Minchinia nelsoni (MSX) to make planting in the lower river hazardous because of high mortalities (Andrews, 1964 and in press).

Certain invertebrates are more efficient than others in filtering solids from suspension. An equal degree of variability exists among benthic invertebrates in their ability to mix biodeposits into subsurface sediments. As a result of these differences, the degree to which suspended particulate matter and associated contaminants may be deposited or mixed into sediments may in part depend on the species present, which in turn may be dependent on sediment type. In the event radionuclides are accidentally introduced into an estuary, many isotopes would become adsorbed on suspended particles of clay or silt; others would be incorporated into living cellular material (Caritt and Goodgal, 1954; Rice and Willis, 1959). Oysters and other filter feeders in these estuaries are capable of filtering from suspension large quantities of the suspended solids, as well as the larger living cellular material (Haven and Morales-Alamo, 1966a). Ingested material along with the associated radionuclides would be voided as compacted fecal strings or pellets (biodeposits). Zooplankton populations in the Gunpowder River and its tributaries were sampled monthly from July 1979 to March 1980 in a continuation of similar studies begun in March 1979. Fourteen stations were sampled for mesozooplankton (202 ~m nets); six of these stations were also sampled for microzooplankton (concentration of pumped samples on 76 ~m netting).

Benthic macroinvertebrates (0.5 mm sieve) were sampled quarterly during the period June 1979-April 1980 in the oligohaline habitat in the vicinity of the C. P. The Surry Power Station discharges cooling water into the transition zone of the James River. Phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, and fouling organism communities were sampled during the years 1969 through 1978, which encompassed a preoperational and an operational period. Temporal changes in the biotic communities followed seasonal patterns of temperature and salinity in the study area, and reflected inherent reproductive patterns of the organisms. Spatial patterns reflected the transport of organisms from the river in the vicinity of the intake to the zone encompassed by the discharge plume, as well as periodic bursts of meroplankton generation in the cooling water canals. …

Heavy metals have been found associated with suspended material, sediments and fluid mud in the Chesapeake Bay. A series of field observations were made along the Bay axis to determine the metal concentrations and their distributions at relatively high and at average river inflow between March 27-April 9 and May 2-10, 1979.

Metal concentrations in suspended material per unit volume of water relate to the concentrations of suspended material. They are higher in the zone of the turbidity maximum than landward in river water or seaward in estuarine water. Thus, metals associated with suspended material tend to accumulate in the …

A preliminary survey of summer plankton in ·waters surrounding the C. P. Crane generating station in Bengies, Maryland, revealed several possible effects of plant operation. These perturbations were separated into apparent small-scale and large-scale effects:

Small-scale effects were limited to the immediate discharge region of Saltpeter Creek and included (1) occasional elevation of temperatures at the surface (in August) to above the lethal limit for most zooplankton and sufficiently high to inhibit photosynthesis, (2) a decrease in chlorophyll-a, seen in July and August, (3) a sharp decrease in productivity, also in July and August, and (4) absence of a common …

Sampling of spring 1979 plankton populations at the C.P. Crane site was conducted at 15 stations during six sampling periods for phytoplankton, at 5 stations monthly from March to June for microzooplankton and monthly at 14 stations for mesozooplankton. Otter trawl cruises were conducted off the middle Atlantic coast of the U. S. from 1971 to 1975. More than 50,000 specimens of demersal fishes were captured during this program at depths of 75 m to 3000 m. Species assemblages were distributed along a coenocline with bathymetric areas of rapid faunal change (anantoclines) and of more gradual faunal change (aganoclines). Between 75 and 3000 m anantoclines were found at 150 to 200 m, 400 to 600 m, 900 to 1000 m, 1350 to 1500 m, and 1900 to 2100 m. The zooplankton of Chesapeake Bay occurs as two definable, seasonal populations: a summer-fall community, peaking in August, and a winter-spring assemblage, peaking in February or March (Grant 1977; Jacobs 1978). A minimum of two surveys per year are therefore required for long-term assessment of these communities: March and August have been selected as sampling months. Adequate assessment of meroplankton, particularly fish eggs and larvae and the larvae of decapod crustaceans, requires sampling over the principal reproductive period of June through August (Goy 1976; Olney 1978).
