Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iii. Maryland Waters, Jane F. Stauble, Douglas H. Wood Jan 1975

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iii. Maryland Waters, Jane F. Stauble, Douglas H. Wood

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems came the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

An In Situ Evaluation Of Nutrient Effects In Lakes, Robert A. Jordan, Michael E. Bender Jan 1973

An In Situ Evaluation Of Nutrient Effects In Lakes, Robert A. Jordan, Michael E. Bender

Reports

A method for performing in situ nutrient enrichment experiments on natural likeJ)liytoplankton ccmmunities was developed and evaluated. One set of experiments in which it was employed was designed to detect limiting nutrients and to provide a basis for predicting future experiment results. Productivity increased in response to all three of the treatment variables used, N, P, and EDTA, but response patterns varied from experiment to experiment. Individual species responded differently to different treatments, and interactions among the treatment variables were important in shaping the community responses to mixtures of two or three variables. The most consistent features of the productivity …

A Check List Of The Biota Of Lower Chesapeake Bay : With Inclusions From The Upper Bay And The Virginian Sea, Marvin L. Wass Oct 1972

A Check List Of The Biota Of Lower Chesapeake Bay : With Inclusions From The Upper Bay And The Virginian Sea, Marvin L. Wass

Reports

The biota of Chesapeake Bay seems generally less known than that of New England and much of our West Coast. The present work attempts to mollify this discrepancy. The compilation has been revised and expanded to include plants and vertebrates. Inclusion of creatures not strictly aquatic but which may occasionally found their areas flooded by tidal waters has necessitated subjective declsions of limitation.

Includes:

  • Lower Plants
  • Wetland and Dune Plants
  • Phylum Protozoa
  • Free-living Invertebrates (except Protozoa)
  • Fishes of Chesapeake Bay and the Adjacent Coastal Plain
  • Herptiles of the Maryland and Virginia
  • Coastal Plain Birds Dependent on Open Water or Wetlands …

Hydroids And Hydromedusae Of Southern Chesapeake Bay, Dale Calder Jan 1971

Hydroids And Hydromedusae Of Southern Chesapeake Bay, Dale Calder

Reports

A survey was made in southern Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from April 1965 through March 1968 to determine the species of hydrozoans present, their seasonality and reproductive periodicities. This report discusses 43 hydroid and 27 medusa species known from the study area, of which 23 hydroids and 11 medusae have not previously been found in Chesapeake Bay. Clytia paulensis and the hydroid of Moerisia lyonsi have not been reported before in North American waters, and the hydroid of Amphinema dinema is recorded for the first time from the western Atlantic. The present records extend the northern range of one …

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Gammaridea (Crustacea : Amphipoda) Of The Lower Chesapeake Estuaries, James Feely, Marvin L. Wass Jan 1971

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Gammaridea (Crustacea : Amphipoda) Of The Lower Chesapeake Estuaries, James Feely, Marvin L. Wass

Reports

Gammarid amphipods of three tidal rivers entering Chesapeake Bay were studied for ten months, particularly in the York River where 40 species were record during the period. Several species moved up or down the rivers with changing salinity. The more abundant species had longer breeding seasons. The number of described species from lower Chesapeake Bay is now 42 and the presence of 10 undescribed species and of several which bracket the region indicates that much remains to be learned about amphipods in the Bay. Nineteen of these have a boreal affinity and seven are limited to the Virginian subprovince. A …

Groups Of Associated Species In The Phytoplankton Of The Caribbean Sea (Ne Of Venezuela), Ramón Margalef, Fernando Gonzalez Bernaldes Jan 1971

Groups Of Associated Species In The Phytoplankton Of The Caribbean Sea (Ne Of Venezuela), Ramón Margalef, Fernando Gonzalez Bernaldes

Reports

This work results from the confluence of two programs of investigation and, naturally, from a common interest in ecological problems. The Institute of Forrestry and Plant Biology had utilized, besides other methods, the analysis of principle components of correlation matrices for the study of vegetation and have at their disposal adequate programs for the treatment of a great volume of data. For its part, the Institute of Fishery Investigations is interested in very similar problems of classification, standardization and calculation, and has collected a large quantity of data on the cell density of different species in the plankton and environmental …

A Study Of The Effects Of Dredging And Dredge Spoil Disposal On The Marine Environment: Project Report., Virginia Institute Of Marine Science Jul 1967

A Study Of The Effects Of Dredging And Dredge Spoil Disposal On The Marine Environment: Project Report., Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

The Rappahannock Shoal and spoil disposal area investigated encompasses an area of approximately 180 square miles. The initial sampling program (1961) consisted of the establishment of a series of transects across the survey area. One hundred sampling stations were located along the established transects.

Inasmuch as the texture of the bottom sediments varied distinctly from place to place within the mid-bay region, the initial objective was to delineate the sediment distribution. Ninety-eight core samples were taken from the area with a modified Phleger coring device and analyzed in detail for textural characteristics. Representative stations were chosen and core samples were …

Check List Of The Marine Invertebrates Of Virginia, Marvin L. Wass Jan 1965

Check List Of The Marine Invertebrates Of Virginia, Marvin L. Wass

Reports

This list is the third revision of a preliminary list compiled by Dr. Willis G. Hewatt in 1959. This latest revision has been shortened by the deletion of most oceanic species. Conversely, a number of estuarine species have been added through further work. Those species known from the published work of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Solomons Island, Maryland, have been included.

For several groups the list should be quite complete; for others, such as the amphipods, of which there are 21 unidentified species in the VIMS collection, much taxonomic work remains. Since many species have been identified only by the …
