The purpose of this paper was to review the current state of knowledge regarding the effects of alcohol ingestion during pregnancy, to determine the specific issues that remain under speculation, and to develop a theoretical research design which might aid in determining the role, if any, of marihuana in compounding fetal alcohol effects.

The literature reviewed indicated that alcohol creates a continuum of fetal effects from mild abnormalities to the full fetal alcohol syndrome; current marihuana studies suggest possible adverse effects on the fetus. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of lead on the brain lipids of developing rats.

Lead acetate was added to the drinking water of two pregnant rats. A' control dam was maintained on the same diet without the lead. Following birth and weaning the lead concentration was reduced and an equal number of pups from each litter were sacrificed on days 19, 22, 26, 30, and 35 after birth. The brain lipids were isolated and fatty acid distribution analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography.

Fire history, the initial effect of fire disturbance on community structure, the response of communities one and two years after fire disturbance, and the present-day vegetation patter were examined in the westernmost portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina.

Sectioning of fire scars, field observations, historical accounts, and fire control records indicated that the fire disturbance regime has changed dramatically during the last 200 years. Man-caused fires have probably been an important disturbance since Indians migrated into the area over 12 thousand years ago. Between 1790 and 1940, Euro-American man frequently burned the landscape. …

This nutrition status survey was conducted at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in conjunction with a southern regional nutrition project operative in ten sites throughout the southeast. The purpose of this study was to assess folate nutriture of the subjects using both biochemical and dietary indicators. The sample group was comprised of 94 adolescent females 14 ± 0.5 years of age, from two race groups (black and white) and two income categories (≤ $1,200/capita/year and ≥ $2,000/capita/year). Recent studies (Lohrl 1973i Karlsson and Nilsson 1977) have shown that there may be a relationship between nestbox size and clutch size in several passerine species. The present study was designed to determine whether nestbox size influences the clutch size and reproductive success of House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and to test possible cues a female might utilize to assess the size of a given nestbox. Three census techniques were used from June 1978 to August 1979 to estimate population densities of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. Roadside counts were conducted 3 times a week; once at dawn, dusk, and dark. Drive counts were made every 3 months and a 3-week sampling interval was used to make pellet counts. Seasonal density estimates ranged from: 0.29 to 0.58 deer/ha (dark counts) , 0.29 to 0.76 deer/ha (drive counts) , and 0.18 to 0.47 deer/ha (pellet counts).

The present study was undertaken to monitor the quality of drinking water in the ghanats of Tehran during 1978-1979. Four sites were chosen, and various limnological parameters were investigated.

Physical-chemical analyses were evaluated to determine the composition of the water. There was no significant pollution related to chemical-physical parameters.

Planktonic samples were analyzed with the aid of a Sedgewich-Rafter counting cell. A total of 47 genera were found in all four ghanats.

The planktonic population declined dramatically in winter. Mean diversity and equitability of the algae showed no significant level of pollution and degradation in the study areas.

Reestablishment of the wild turkey has been successful in the southern part of Illinois where large established tracts of woodland occur. However, turkeys are capable of surviving in areas with less forest cover, if food, nesting materials and protection are available. This project evaluated the potential turkey habitat of a 14-county area of eastern Illinois along the drainage of the Wabash River. A vegetative analysis of turkey habitat was conducted in Alexander, Jackson, Union, and Calhoun Counties, Illinois. From these studies it was determined that turkeys inhabit relatively open stands of timber with agricultural fields and forest clearings in close proximity. Species of Quercus comprise approximately 40% or more of the tree species sampled, with Q. alba, Q. rubra, and Q. velutina being the most dominant. Found growing in association with Quercus are species of Carya, Cornus florida, Acer saccharum, Sassafras albidum, Fraxinus americana, and Ulmus rubra, in varying concentrations. Three sludges - aerobic, anaerobic, Milorganite, and peat moss were tested for fertilizing ability, seed inhibition, and chemical composition. Using green bean (Phaseolus sp.) and rye grass (Lolium perenne) seeds in two sludge amended soils, a greenhouse study indicated growth enhancement for the rye grass and variable results for the green beans. Algal and fungal contaminations were problems. Seeds germinated in sludge extract were inhibited, but no correlation with the chemical analyses could be established. Only Milorganite had a heavy metal content significantly higher than the soils tested.

Eight highly trained male subjects were selected from the Eastern Illinois University Track Team. The test procedure consisted of two, maximal two-minute runs on the track for distance, separated by a 30-minute recovery. The recovery consisted of a walk at 20-minutes per mile pace or a jog at 7½ to 8 minutes per mile pace. The repopulation of stream fishes was studied from 17 May 1979 to 25 October 1979 following a major kill (100% mortality) caused by nitrogen fertilizer pollution in Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois. The extent of recovery was determined by comparing post-kill collections with pre-kill survey data that was collected on 25 October 1978.

The effect of heating on aquatic ecosystems by energy producing power plants has not been fully determined. A comparative study of the reproduction of Pseudemys scripta was conducted in heated and natural lakes in southwestern Illinois from 30 March to 10 July, 1979. Lakes used were the same as those used for comparative growth studies of P. scripta by another researcher. Lake Baldwin (heated) has had a reduction in vegetation since that researcher's work. The heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, is widespread in dogs in North America and has been reported in wild canids in many states. This is a report of this parasite in hearts removed from coyote, red fox and gray fox carcasses collected in Illinois. A total of 415 coyotes had a significantly higher infection rate (23.6%) than 225 red foxes (3.6%) and 99 gray foxes (3.0%). Infection rates in red foxes and coyotes were significantly higher in or near the Wabash Border Natural Division along the eastern side of the state, suggesting a relationship between infection rates and this region. An investigation of 2 sites on the Embarras River and 1 site on Polecat Creek was undertaken for a one-year period. Special emphasis was given to phytoplankton species and to their seasonal variations. Approximately 170 species from 8 divisions of algae were encountered during the one-year period.

Temperature was found to have no direct correlation with algal periodicity.

Palmer's organic pollution genus index was applied to determine the approximate levels of organic pollution at all three sampling sites. Only one time during the year (10/1/79), did all three sites suggest high organic pollution.

Three corn inbreds were grown in artificially inoculated, steamed greenhouse soil amended with atrazine (2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine) to determine the herbicide's effect on the severity of Gibberella zeae (Schwabe) Petch-induced seedling blight. Corn inbreds used were Gibberella-resistant (FR632), Gibberella-intermediate (FRMo17), and Gibberella-susceptible (C123^HT). Soils were amended with atrazine at rates of 2, 15, and 30 ppm.

Susceptible inbred seedlings showed no response to the herbicide with symptims equally severe in controls and all 3 concentrations of atrazine. Intermediate inbred seedlings grown in all atrazine amended soils showed significantly more severe disease symptoms than controls. Soil amended with …

The lichen flora of "Rocks Park", Coles County, Illinois, was studied extensively. The tract (sec 17, T12N,R10E), which is located in east-central Illinois, was selected for study because of its diversity of habitats for lichen growth. A literature review of the studies of the lichens of east central and southern Illinois and nearby Indiana is included. The area is heavily dissected by the Embarrass River and a few small tributaries. The major vegetation type is oak-hickory forest.
