Viability Of Pre-Adult Stages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Khadijeh Shakerifar Jan 1977

Viability Of Pre-Adult Stages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Khadijeh Shakerifar

Masters Theses

The pre-adult viability of four pure strains and two hybrid strains was determined for Drosophila melanogaster. The data fail to show significant mortality and the ratios of the duration of the three different stages remained approximately constant. There are many factors which have been found to affect survivorship; one factor is density. As density of population within a limited and closed universe increases, the rate of mortality would increase and viability would generally decrease. However, our densities were well within the range having no effect on viability. Under the conditions these experiments were performed, no genetic or environmental factors …

Production And Utilization Of Sunflower Food Plots At Shelbyville Wildlife Management Area, Illinois, Duane T. Dust Jan 1977

Production And Utilization Of Sunflower Food Plots At Shelbyville Wildlife Management Area, Illinois, Duane T. Dust

Masters Theses

Three sunflower (Helianthus annuus) fields from 3.2 ha to 1.0 ha in size, planted on the Shelbyville Wildlife Management Area, Illinois were analyzed for seed production and utilization by birds. Seed in heads and on the ground were sampled and species and numbers of birds in the fields were censused at two week intervals from September, 1976 to February, 1977. Decline in seed availability was most rapid in the smallest field and least rapid in the largest field. Fields and portions of fields adjacent to wooded cover were also utilized more rapidly. American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) …

The Effect Of Ergosterol On The Desaturation Of 14c-Labeled Oleic Acid In Tetrahymena, Maynard E. Neville Jr. Jan 1977

The Effect Of Ergosterol On The Desaturation Of 14c-Labeled Oleic Acid In Tetrahymena, Maynard E. Neville Jr.

Masters Theses

The ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis-Strain W desaturated 14C-labeled fatty acid substrate in both sterol supplemented (ergosterol) and nonsupplemented cultures. Cis-octadecenoic acid (14C-9-18:1), when added to the medium during the log phase of growth, was incorporated into the cells and also desaturated at the Δ6 and Δ12 positions. The 14C labeled substrate and products, linoleate (9,12-18:2) or linolenate (6,9,12-18:3) were recovered and separated by silver-nitrate Unisil column chromatography. Initially, recovery of 14C compounds varied widely when expressed as the percent of total counts per minute recovered from column chromotography, and a variety of …

Interrelationships Of Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Bathyplectes Curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) In Illinois With Emphasis On Host-Parasite Densities, Distribution Of Parasites Within Available Hosts And Estimates Of Percent Parasitism, Robert John Barney Jan 1977

Interrelationships Of Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Bathyplectes Curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) In Illinois With Emphasis On Host-Parasite Densities, Distribution Of Parasites Within Available Hosts And Estimates Of Percent Parasitism, Robert John Barney

Masters Theses

In an attempt to better understand the host-parasite relationship of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), all life stages of the parasite were monitored throughout the spring. Sampling was conducted on a degree day basis from early March to late May in an alfalfa field in Mason County, Illinois.

Dissections of host alfalfa weevil larvae revealed 2nd and 3rd host instars were preferred larvae for oviposition. Peak parasite densities were found to precede peak total host larval densities, but coincided with peak densities of the preferred 2nd and 3rd instars. Larger host …

The Effects Of Superovulation On The Reproductive Cycle Of Mature Female Mus Musculus, David F. Grace Jan 1977

The Effects Of Superovulation On The Reproductive Cycle Of Mature Female Mus Musculus, David F. Grace

Masters Theses

A total of 38 Mus musculus were used to compare superovulation to normal ovulation in three different areas of the reproductive cycle. The areas studied include the fertilization and abortion rates, alternation of ovarian function, and normalization of estrus cycling. No statistically significant differences were noted between the two groups in either fertility rates or abortion rates. A distinct difference was noted in alternation of ovarian function. Normally ovulating mice showed a distinct right or left preference in the number of ova ovulated from each ovary. Animals showing a left preference exhibited approximately a 2:1 ratio and animals with a …

Blood Parasites Of Squirrels From Coles And Lake Counties In Illinois, Nicholas I. Obiri Jan 1977

Blood Parasites Of Squirrels From Coles And Lake Counties In Illinois, Nicholas I. Obiri

Masters Theses

Hepatozoon and microfilariae are described from the blood of fox and gray squirrels captured in Coles and Lake Counties in Illinois during 1976 and 1977. The hepatozoon species is identified as Hepatozoon griseisciuri on the basis of parasite morphology and hosts. A higher rate of infection (35.7% : 11.1%) was observed in gray squirrels than in fox squirrels and more adults were infected than juveniles. No microfilariae were found in gray squirrels but fox squirrels had a 57.1% infection rate with no difference based on age. The observed microfilariae are similar to that described by Davidson from Maryland gray squirrels …

A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers Jan 1977

A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers

Masters Theses

The establishment of normal chromosomal patterns for a wide range of plants and animals has led to the recognition of abnormalities as well as their relationship to phenotypic irregularities. Research dealing with the expression of human karyotype is of prime interest; but, closely rivaling that is the genetic study of domestic animals which are of economic importance to man.

One observed anomaly which has come under scrutiny by cytogeneticists is that of the female member of a heterogeneous bovine twin pair, the freemartin. This is a sterile animal with internal morphology showing varying degrees of intersex. Cytogenetic studies reveal XX/XY …

A Stream Survey Of Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois, Using Macroinvertebrates As Indicators Of Organic Pollution, Joseph R. Rowe Jan 1977

A Stream Survey Of Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois, Using Macroinvertebrates As Indicators Of Organic Pollution, Joseph R. Rowe

Masters Theses

A stream survey of Riley Creek in Coles County Illinois, was undertaken to determine ecological trends and the qualitative status of the aquatic community throughout the course of the stream.

The survey encompassed the entire length of Riley Creek from the area of its status as an intermittant waterway to its confluence with Cassel Creek. Sampling periods included the months of April, May, June, July, October and November.

Macroinvertebrate collections were made at six locations along the stream approximately equidistant from each other. The organisms were assigned tolerance levels as designated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Physical and chemical …

Seasonal Diversities Of Lotic And Lentic Benthic Insect Populations, Jerry E. Bindel Jan 1977

Seasonal Diversities Of Lotic And Lentic Benthic Insect Populations, Jerry E. Bindel

Masters Theses

The benthic insect populations from Lake Charleston and the Embarras River above and below Lake Charleston were examined twice monthly for seasonal differences in number of organisms, number of taxa and species diversity from October 13, 1976 to February 16, 1977. The water quality parameters of alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature were also examined for each site to determine if any parameter showed a sufficient deviation as to exert an influence on the benthic insect populations. Low dissolved oxygen and high carbon dioxide values were noted and occurred at times corresponding to lower numbers of taxa and …
