Cows and heifers in milk for fewer than 50 days, as shown on the DHIA Somatic Cell Count report, should have a lower average Somatic Cell Count than cows in milk for more than 300 days, if the dry cow mastitis treatment and management programs are effective. The DHIA Somatic Cell Count (SCC) average for a dairy herd is a good evaluation of a mastitis control program. Since leucocytes migrate to the mammary system during periods of subclinical mastitis, the SCC average indicates the amount of subclinical mastitis in a herd. We tested the effects of flushing (3.4 lb extra ground sorghum grain for at least 10 days before estrus) and estrous synchronization with altrenogest on litter traits in gilts. Altrenogest had no effect on litter size or weight, but flushing increased both traits. The response to flushing occurred entirely among gilts artificially inseminated at the pubertal estrus. Pubertal gilts represented approximately 40% of the gilts in our experiment, and their improvement in litter size was almost two pigs. Five pork carcasses were used to determine the effects of hot boning and various combinations of salt (0, 1.5, or 3.0%) and a phosphate mixture (0 or 0.5%) on functional, processing, and storage characteristics of preblended pork (preblends). Although hot-boned (HB) preblends had superior functional properties compared to conventionally boned (CB) preblends, HB and CB frankfurters had similar characteristics. More (P(.05) myosin and actin (proteins that cause lean and fat particles to bind together) were extracted from HB than CB preblends. Eighty barrows and 80 gilts were fed diets containing four crude protein levels (16, 15, 14, and 13%) from approximately 115 lb to a market weight of 230-235 lb. Barrows and gilts were fed separately to determine their protein requirements during the finishing period. Performance traits (ADG, ADF, and F/G) of barrows and gilts were not significantly affected by increasing the protein content of the diet from 13 to 16%. However, barrows linearly decreased in fat thickness at the 10th rib as crude protein content in the diet was increased. Efficiency and profitability in environmental extremes are highly variable but performance level during environmental stress is generally less than maximum. The thermal environment strongly influences pig performance with air temperature having the primary effect. All too often, producers fail to consider the total environment of the pig. Three field trials were conducted with finishing yearling steers to compare the performance of cattle receiving Compudose® or Ralgro®/Synovex-S® and Synovex-S®/Synovex-S® reimplant combinations. No differences were found between Compudose and the reimplant programs in cattle daily gain, feed efficiency, or cost of gain. Compudose retention was 97.5% in the 1317 head implanted. Synovex-S implant site abscess rate ranged from 5.7 to 15.4%.

Feedlot heifers implanted once with either Compudose® or Synovex-H® performed similarly, with daily gains of 3.16 vs 3.27 lbs, respectively. Compudose retention in the ear was 97.5%. Implant site abscess rate was 2.5% for Compudose and 13.7% for Synovex-H.

Dry rolled wheat and high moisture corn were fed singly and in three combinations in a 132-day finishing trial. Daily gain, feed intake, and final live weight were greatest on the 75% corn:25% wheat diet. Feed efficiencies and carcass characteristics were not affected by grain combination. Daily gain and feed intake tended to decrease as percentage of wheat in the diet increased above 25%.

Fall-calving, first-calf heifers (136 head) were fed TDN levels approximating 85% or 100% of NRC recommendations, with or without 200 mg/hd/day lasalocid. Those fed the recommended diet gained more weight from 130 days prepartum to calving and showed more improvement in condition score before calving than those on the low-energy diet. After calving, the group fed the recommended energy level lost less weight and condition and had better reproductive performance than the low-energy group. The only effect of lasalocid was to improve calf performance in the low-energy group.

The inoculants, BioPower®, increased the rate and efficiency of ensiling in Acco Paymaster 351 forage sorghum regardless of storage temperature. The untreated, 60 F silage fermentated slower and had higher pH, lower lactic acid, and higher acetic acid values than its 90 F counterpart.

Heifers that were flank-spayed plus rumen-ovarian autografted (FS+A) responded similarly to Ralgro®, Synovex-H®, and Synovex-S® implants on' pasture. Grazing heifers spayed by the Kimberling-Rupp technique also responded similarly to Synovex-H and Synovex-S implants. During the finishing phase, heifers implanted with Synovex-S gained 5.7% faster than heifers implanted with Ralgro, and those implanted with Synovex-H were intermediate in performance. There was no statistical interaction between spaying method and implant treatment during either the grazing or finishing phases.

In the last 2 years, three trials were conducted to determine the influence of hybrid and stage of maturity at harvest on silage yield, composition, and nutritive value for 15 forage and nine grain sorghum hybrids. Agronomic data, such as days to half bloom, plant height, and whole-plant dry matter (OM) and grain yields, were also obtained. In Trial 1, Pioneer 947, Acco Paymaster 351, and DeKalb 25E forage sorghum hybrids had different whole-plant OM and crude protein (CP) contents. Twenty newborn bull calves assigned to two groups, protozoa-free or protozoa-inoculated, were used to determine the effects of ruminal protozoa on performance of early weaned calves. Calves in the protozoa group were inoculated via stomach tube with a suspension of ruminal protozoa at weekly intervals until a viable population was established. Calves were evaluated weekly for weight gain and feed intake. Several spaying and ovarian autografting methods were tested in three field trials with 658 grazing heifers. None of the techniques examined were found to have a beneficial effect on heifer gains compared to intact controls. Heifers' initial weight, frame size, and body condition score were associated with cattle performance; however, their relative impact on gains varied across the three trials.

Over 500 crossbred steers were used in three trials to compare lifetime implant strategies and to study the effects of implanting during the suckling period on performance in the growing and finishing periods. Contrary to previous research, implanting in the suckling period did not increase suckling gain. Implanting in the growing period increased (P<.05) average daily gain, and the implant response in the growing period was not influenced by suckling implant treatment. Steers implanted twice during the finishing period had similar finishing gains regardless of prior implant treatment. Steers implanted only once during the finishing phase gained less (P<.05) than those implanted twice, and while their gains were higher than those of control steers, the difference was small (P>.05). Implanting steers in the finishing phase tended to improve feed conversion but again the difference was not statistically significant. All implant treatments increased (P<.05) lifetime average daily gains and total gain, and there was no difference among implant combinations. Implant treatments increased lifetime gains by 30 to 54 lbs. Because implanting in the suckling period did not reduce cattle performance during the growing and finishing periods, there appears to be no basis for discounting the price of previously implanted cattle. Additionally, this study emphasizes the importance of reimplanting cattle during long finishing periods

A 60-day growth trial with 170 exotic crossbred steers (avg. wt. 626 lbs) was conducted to assess the value of raw soybeans in silage-based diets. Protein supplements were based on 1) urea, 2) urea plus soybean oil (SBO), 3) soybean meal (SBM), 4) SBM plus SBO, 5) rolled (RSB), and 6) whole (WSB) soybeans. Soybean oil was added to treatments 2 and 4 in amounts equivalent to that contributed from raw soybeans. Total diets were 11.5% crude protein. Steers fed SBM gained faster (P<.05) and consumed more feed than those fed RSB or WSB. However, SBO added back to the SBM diet resulted in performance similar to that of steers fed RSB or WSB (P=.47). This suggests that the protein value of SBM and raw soybeans was similar, but that small increments (less than 2% of diet dry matter) of soybean lipid inhibited ruminal diet digestion and(or} utilization. Feeding the ionophores monensin and lasalocid In a high-concentrate diet resulted in gut tissues utilizing less glucose. Monensin caused less urea to be recycled. The new, experimental ionophore (lCI 139603) resulted in an increased net absorption of acetate. Thus, ionophores may differ in how they execute their effects on feed efficiency.

Rumensin® Ruminal Delivery Devices put in place 76 days prior to steers entering a feedlot resulted in an average reduction in daily dry matter intake of 3.6% and a small 1.8% increase in daily gain during a controlled 28-day feeding phase. All steers were fed an 85% concentrate feedlot diet fortified with 30g/ton of Rumensin® and 10 g/ton of tylan®.

Various levels of lasalocid (Bovatec®) added to a protein supplement did not improve weight or condition change of beef cows grazing poor quality winter pasture. Similarly, calf birth weight and most forage utilization characteristics (e.g., intake, passage rate, and fermentation characteristics) were not altered by Bovatec level. Although forage digestibility was influenced by Bovatec level, changes were not sufficient to influence performance characteristics.

Two Holstein cows were fed Rumensin for 12 weeks, beginning approximately 90 days postpartum. Milk production increased 7%, whereas percentage fat in milk decreased 10.3%. Percentage protein in milk increased 9.6% in the early stages and decreased 10.2% in the late stages of the study. Daily fat yield did not change, whereas protein yield increased in the early stages, but did not change in later stages. Fat corrected milk (FCM) did not change with treatment, but dry matter intake (DMI) tended to increase when Rumensin was fed. Two hundred and seventy pigs averaging 125 lbs were utilized in two growth trials to determine the effects of raw soybeans or soybean oil on finishing pig performance. In each trial, raw soybeans or soybean oil were substituted for milo to provide 2 or 3% added fat. Pigs fed these diets were compared to pigs fed a milo-soybean meal diet (control). Management and biological factors combine to limit litter size in swine herds. With present technology, improving litter size depends upon increasing the number born in the first litter and prolonging sow longevity. Methods for improving size of the first litter rely on increasing the number of eggs ovulated and include flushing (increased feed for at least 10 days before breeding), selecting breeds with high ovulation rates, and delaying breeding until after the pubertal or first estrus. Five pork carcasses were used to determine the effects of hot boning and various combinations of salt (0, 1.5, or 3.0%) and a phosphate mixture (0 or 0.5%) on bacteria, TBA (measure of fat rancidity), and pH values of preblended pork (preblends). In both HB (hot boned within 2 hr postmortem) and CB (conventionally boned at 24 hr postmortem) preblends, salt increased (P<.05) TBA values (indicates increased rancidity) and decreased (P<.05) growth of psychrotrophic bacteria, whereas phosphate increased (P<.05) pH and decreased TBA values. Salt levels could be reduced from 3.0 to 1.5% in preblends without storage problems, if phosphate (0.5%) was included. Longissimus samples from seven pork loins were used to determine display color stability when packaged in oxygen-permeable (polyviny lchloride, PVC) film and when vacuum packaged. Color scores were different at all times when evaluation was done under display lighting, with poorest color under Cool White and most desirable color under NAFA or Grolux Wide Spectrum. Two trials involving 262 pigs were conducted to evaluate five worming programs for growing-finishing pigs fed on dirt lots heavily infected with roundworm (Ascarid) eggs. The control pigs (no anthelmentic) were compared in performance (ADG, F/G) and lung liver lesions at slaughter with pigs that received ivermectin on day 1 or day 28, pyrantel tartrate for the first 28 days, or purge treatments between day 28 to 31 with dichlovos or fenbendazole.
