Petroleum Degradation By Naturally Occurring Populations Of Marine Bacteria From Middle Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf Waters, Alexander Maccubbin Jan 1980

Petroleum Degradation By Naturally Occurring Populations Of Marine Bacteria From Middle Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf Waters, Alexander Maccubbin

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Bacterial populations indigenous to surface (1 m) waters of the Middle Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf were sampled at seasonal intervals to determine the abundance and distribution of petroleum-degrading (HC) and "total" heterotrophic (HET) bacteria. Simultaneously, unweathered South Louisiana crude oil (SLCO) was added to aliquots of surface water samples to evaluate rates and patterns of degradation of hydrocarbon. Degradation was studied using selected nutrient and temperature regimes in both closed flask and prototype "open" or continuous dilution systems. HET bacterial levels generally decreased with distance from land (x inshore = 6 x 10('4) MPN/ml to x offshore = 6 x …

Anaerobic Metabolism Of The Ribbed Mussel, Geukensia Demissa, Ming-Shan Ho Jan 1980

Anaerobic Metabolism Of The Ribbed Mussel, Geukensia Demissa, Ming-Shan Ho

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The anaerobic metabolism of the intertidal ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa (= Modiolus demissus), is reported in this dissertation. This mollusc was selected because anaerobic metabolism is believed to be of vital significance to its survival during the air exposure period of the tidal cycle.;Ribbed mussels, Geukensia demissa, were maintained in either aerated or hypoxic water for up to four days. Major metabolites and polysaccharide of each mussel were then analyzed and compared. Succinate, propionate and alanine were found to accumulate hypoxically, but not malate, (alpha)-keto-glutarate and pyruvate. The polysaccharide content of each mussel was quite different and did not show …

Resource Use By Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) On The Outer Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight: Implications To Community Structure, Linda C. Schaffner Jan 1980

Resource Use By Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) On The Outer Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight: Implications To Community Structure, Linda C. Schaffner

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Benthic communities on the outer continental shelf of the Middle Atlantic Bight are characterized by abundant populations of amphipods in the families Ampeliscidae and Corophiidae. Members of these families occupy tubes at or near the sediment surface and, thus, potentially compete with each other for spatial and trophic resources. This study examines the spatial, temporal and trophic resource use of six numerically dominant species in these families as a means of assessing the relative importance of competition as a structuring force in outer shelf benthic communities.

Analysis of abundance data and the use of discriminant analysis to relate abundance to …

Morphological, Histological, And Physiological Aspects Of Assimilation In Larval Spot, Leiostomus Xanthurus Lacepede, John Jeffrey Govoni

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In view of questions concerning the digestive and assimilative abilities of larval marine fishes, the changes in these processes with development, and their relationship with starvation-induced mortality; this study has three objectives: (1) to examine the morphological and histological development of the alimentary canal and associated structures of larval spot, Leiostomus xanthurus (Pisces: Sciaenidae); (2) to assess short-term carbon assimilation in discrete age cohorts of larval spot; and (3) to relate any changes in assimilation to development. The alimentary canal and associated structures of larval spot from hatching through transformation (metamorphosis) were examined using light microscopy. These findings were related …

The Effects Of Chlorinated Sea Water On The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Chae E. Laird Jan 1980

The Effects Of Chlorinated Sea Water On The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Chae E. Laird

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The effects of chlorinated sea water on the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, were evaluated through measurements of acute toxicity, serum constituents (protein, total ninhydrin positive substances, chloride, osmotic, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations), oxygen consumption and ventilation rates in whole crabs, and oxygen consumption of excised gills. Histological examination of gills was also performed. The 96-hr LC50 for female blue crabs exposed to chlorinated sea water at 21C and 14('0)/00 was 0.86 mgCl(,2)/l CIO (chlorine induced oxidants). The value for males under similar conditions was 0.84 mgCl(,2)/l CIO. Mortality was uncommon below 0.61 mgCl(,2)/l, but reached 100% with …

Food Habits, Prey Selectivity And Food Resource Partitioning Of A Community Of Fishes On The Outer Continental Shelf, George R. Sedberry Iii Jan 1980

Food Habits, Prey Selectivity And Food Resource Partitioning Of A Community Of Fishes On The Outer Continental Shelf, George R. Sedberry Iii

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The demersal fish community of the outer continental shelf in the Middle Atlantic Bight consists of resident species, seasonal species with boreal affinities, and seasonal species with warm temperature affinities. Dominant demersal fishes of the outer continental shelf feed primarily on macrobenthic invertebrates, which persist in dense, stable communities. Some dominant predators also feed heavily on fishes, cephalopods, and planktonic invertebrates, at least seasonally. Food habits of the fishes change seasonally, especially at the species level. Food habits of fishes also change considerably with size, with most predators showing distinct feeding stanzas separated by a marked change in feeding strategy. …
