Student Perceptions Of Scholarly Writing: Student Generation Of Collaborative Rubrics To Score Scholarly Writing, Terri Enslein, Ed Kosack, Hanna Wetzel
Faculty Scholarship
Scholarly writing is an important skill in all fields of study. Despite a strong focus on writing in many courses, faculty and students have disparate expectations related to scholarly writing. Herein, a classroom exercise is presented in which students were asked to develop a rubric that would be used to evaluate their summative writing assessment. Students were provided with a list of elements that commonly represent good scholarly writing, asked to define what effectively demonstrating these elements looks like, and asked to assign the weight that would be given to each element. The weights given to each element by students …
Ecological Investigations: A Phenomenology Of Habitats, Adam Konopka
Ecological Investigations: A Phenomenology Of Habitats, Adam Konopka
Faculty Scholarship
These investigations identify and clarify some basic
assumptions and methodological principles involved in
ecological explanations of plant associations. How are
plants geographically distributed into characteristic groups?
What are the basic conditions that organize groups of
interspecific plant populations that are characteristic of
particular kinds of habitats? Answers to these questions
concerning the geographical distribution of plants in late
19th century European plant geography and early 20th
century American plant ecology can be distinguished
according to differing logical assumptions concerning the
habitats of plant associations.

Goals of this paper Healthcare is often a late adopter when it comes to new techniques and technologies; this works to our advantage in the development of this paper as we relied on lessons learned from CLS in other industries to help guide the content of this paper. Appendix V includes a number of example use cases of AI in Healthcare and other industries. This paper focuses on identifying unique attributes, constraints and potential best practices towards what might represent “good” development for Continuously Learning Systems (CLS) AI systems with applications ranging from pharmaceutical applications for new drug development and …

Eosinophilic esophagitis is diagnosed by symptoms, and at least 15 intraepithelial eosinophils per high power field in an esophageal biopsy. Other pathologic features have not been emphasized. We developed a histology scoring system for esophageal biopsies that evaluates eight features: eosinophil density, basal zone hyperplasia, eosinophil abscesses, eosinophil surface layering, dilated intercellular spaces, surface epithelial alteration, dyskeratotic epithelial cells and lamina propria fibrosis. Severity (grade) and extent (stage) of abnormalities were scored using a 4 point scale (0 normal; 3 maximum change). Reliability was demonstrated by strong to moderate agreement among 3 pathologists who scored biopsies independently (p≤0.008). Several features …

We report here that (4R,9Z)-hexadec-9-en-4-olide [(R)-desmolactone] is a sex attractant or sex pheromone for multiple species and subspecies in the cerambycid genus Desmocerus. This compound was previously identified as a female-produced sex attractant pheromone of Desmocerus californicus californicus. Headspace volatiles from female Desmocerus aureipennis aureipennis contained (R)-desmolactone, and the antennae of adult males of two species responded strongly to synthetic (R)-desmolactone in coupled gas chromatography-electroantennogram analyses. In field bioassays in California, Oregon, and British Columbia, traps baited with synthetic (R)-desmolactone captured males of several Desmocerus species and subspecies. Only male beetles were captured, indicating that this compound acts as a …

Beyond Race And Place: Distal Sociological Determinants Of Hiv Disparities, J. R. Robbins, M. Buot, J. P. Docena

Informed behavior change as an HIV prevention tool has yielded unequal successes across populations. Despite decades of HIV education, some individuals remain at high risk. The mainstream media often portrays these risk factors as products of race and national borders; however, a rich body of recent literature proposes a host of complex social factors that influence behavior, including, but not limited to: poverty, income inequality, stigmatizing social institutions and health care access. We examined the relationship between numerous social indicators and HIV incidence across eighty large U.S. cities in 1990 and 2000. During this time, major correlating factors included income …
Choosing And Using Diversity Indices: Insights For Ecological Applications From The German Biodiversity Exploratories, Kathyrn Morris, T Caruso, F. Buscot
Choosing And Using Diversity Indices: Insights For Ecological Applications From The German Biodiversity Exploratories, Kathyrn Morris, T Caruso, F. Buscot
Faculty Scholarship
Biodiversity, a multidimensional property of natural systems, is difficult to quantify partly because of the multitude of indices proposed for this purpose. Indices aim to describe general properties of communities that allow us to compare different regions, taxa, and trophic levels. Therefore, they are of fundamental importance for environmental monitoring and conservation, although there is no consensus about which indices are more appropriate and informative. We tested several common diversity indices in a range of simple to complex statistical analyses in order to determine whether some were better suited for certain analyses than others. We used data collected around the …
