Seagrass Survivor. Subjects: Life Science / Biology, Environmental Science, Marine / Ocean Science Grades: 6-8, Amanda Bromilow

Reports

This role-play and decision-making game allows students to simulate predator-prey interactions between fish and blue crabs in a seagrass bed. Students will then make inferences about the influence of habitat and body size on juvenile blue crab survival.

Counting Blue Crabs In The Bay! Subjects: Life Science / Biology, Environmental Science, Marine / Ocean Science Grade Level: 6-8, Bruce W. Pfirrmann Jan 2017

Counting Blue Crabs In The Bay! Subjects: Life Science / Biology, Environmental Science, Marine / Ocean Science Grade Level: 6-8, Bruce W. Pfirrmann

Reports

This lesson plan invites students and teachers to ponder the question: How many blue crabs are in the Chesapeake Bay, and where do we find them? Through hands-on activities and the use of real data, students will discover the excitement and grapple with the challenges faced by marine scientists as they try to quantify the use of different habitats by marine animals and estimate the size of marine animal populations.

Effectiveness Of The Blue Crab Spawning Sanctuary In Chesapeake Bay, Debra M. Lambert, Rom Lipcius, John M. Hoenig Feb 2006

Effectiveness Of The Blue Crab Spawning Sanctuary In Chesapeake Bay, Debra M. Lambert, Rom Lipcius, John M. Hoenig

Reports

The blue crab spawning stock in Chesapeake Bay sustained a severe and persistent decline beginning in 1992. As part of the effort to enhance the spawning stock, the spawning sanctuary in lower Chesapeake Bay was enlarged to over 240,000 ha. This marine reserve and corridor prohibits exploitation of mature females en route to or in the spawning grounds during the summer spawning season (1 June-15 September). To assess the effectiveness of the sanctuary, we tagged terminally molted, mature females inside and outside the sanctuary during three sanctuary seasons (2002-2004). Crabs were captured throughout the Bay and its tributaries, measured, tagged, …

Manual For Handling And Shedding Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus), Michael J. Oesterling

Reports

This manual is intended to present a practical approach to constructing and operating a Chesapeake Bay crab shedding facility. Included are portions of an earlier VIMS publication by Paul A. Haefner, Jr. and David Garten (1974), "Methods of handling and shedding blue crabs, (Callinectes sapidus)," as well as a compilation of other scientific and industry experiences. Techniques described may not apply to all situations; in many cases general recommendations are made. Additionally, descriptions of various facility designs refer mainly to those in use in Chesapeake Bay; other areas of the country may use varying, but similar designs. Although the information …

Heating Soft Crab Shedding Systems, Mike Oesterling Mar 1990

Heating Soft Crab Shedding Systems, Mike Oesterling

Reports

The molting of blue crabs, and ultimately soft shell crab production, is regulated by water temperature. A certain threshold or minimum water temperature must be reached before blue crabs begin to molt (shed). Although crabs begin shedding at temperatures in the mid-60'sF (18-19°C), water temperatures near 70°F (21°C) are optimum for active shedding. As the water temperature increases, the time required for a crab to progress through the stages leading to molting decreases (the time needed to go from a white-line, to a pink-line and finally red-line crab). The time needed for a complete molt--for a soft crab to exit …
