Evaluation Of Micro-Dwarf Tomato Cultivars For Controlled Environment Research, Noah Langenfeld, Bruce Bugbee

Dwarf Crops

Controlled environment research on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is often hindered by large plant size. Desired cultivar traits for research include a compact plant size, fast flowering time, and good fruit set. We grew eight micro-dwarf tomato cultivars to examine their suitability as model plants for research. The cultivar ‘Rejina Red’ had the highest harvest index and most ripe fruits among the red-fruited cultivars; ‘Jochalos’ had the highest harvest index and most ripe fruits among the yellow-fruited cultivars. ‘Microtina’ had a higher harvest index than ‘Rosy Finch’, but fruits were smaller, and growth was less determinate. ‘Monetka’ had a …

Monitoring tomato plants regularly from seedling to harvest allows for early detection of abnormal conditions. Although tomato plants can be attacked by a variety of living organisms (insects, mites, pathogens, vertebrates), nonliving (abiotic) conditions can cause just as much damage. Abiotic diseases in tomato plants can arise from nutrient deficiencies, temperature extremes, abnormal lighting, chemical application, changes in water uptake, mechanical damage, genetic mutations, and more. This guide will cover most of the abiotic disorders and diseases that can affect tomatoes in Utah.

Some say that the tomato is the ultimate summer produce. Tomatoes have so much history. Tomatoes are thought to have originated in South America, although Italian cuisine is probably the most associated with them. Early American colonists thought of the tomato as a poison until 1820. Today, more than 60 million tons of tomatoes are produced each year for consumption and the average American eats 80 pounds per year! California is the world's largest producer of processed tomatoes.

Thrips Species Infesting Tomatoes And Other Host Plants Of These Insects In Northern Utah, Darrell R. Maddock May 1946

Thrips Species Infesting Tomatoes And Other Host Plants Of These Insects In Northern Utah, Darrell R. Maddock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study has been to determine which species of thrips infest tomato plants and fruits in northern Utah, and to find out which other plants occurring in this area also serve as hosts for tomato-infesting thrips.

Because of the importance of tomato-infesting thrips to the canning industry, it was decided that more complete knowledge of the species of thrips which are found on tomatoes should be obtained. Because most thrips generally have been difficult to control, it was believed that a general knowledge of the plants on which these thrips occur would enable tomato growers to eliminate …
