Bulletin No. 80 - Irrigation Investigations In 1901, John A. Widtsoe
Bulletin No. 80 - Irrigation Investigations In 1901, John A. Widtsoe
UAES Bulletins
The fact that the ancient and, to arid countries, indispensible art of irrigation lacks a scientific basis, is the justification of the decision taken two years ago by the officers of the Utah Experiment Station, to make irrigation the central subject of their investigations.
Sleeping Habits Of Certain Hymenoptera, Nathan Banks
Sleeping Habits Of Certain Hymenoptera, Nathan Banks

The various means by which insects rest have been but little investigated. Occasional notes have been published, but often in connection with other matter, so that it is extremely difficult to collate the recorded facts. Since the Hymenoptera are among the most assiduous, as well as the most intelligent workers, it is natural that they should exhibit some interesting habits of sleep. The idea that the bee sleeps in the flower seems to have invaded literature at an early date. And there are a number of bees that commonly do remain in flowers (such as those of cucurbits and campanulas) …

The globose or rounded head, which is never flat, oblong, and the difference in the antennae, the antennae in males being 10-jointed, in the females 13-jointed, readily separate the subfamily from the Bethylinre. The group comes quite close to the Dryininae, but in the latter the head is transverse or subquadrate, never rounded, while the antennae are 10-jointed in both sexes.

This family was first defined by that astute British systematist, A. H. Haliday, who, as early as 1839, very correctly placed the family among the Fossores.

Prof. Westwood and others confused these wasps with the Vespidae and the Eumenidae, although Latreille had years previously established his family Masarides. Henry de Saussure, in his "Etudes," treats them as a tribe. They, however, represent a distinct family close to the Eurnenidae, but easily separated from them and the Vespidae by the wings not being folded longitudinally, by peculiarities of the antennae, which are usually strongly clavate at tip; by the wholly different abdomen, the venter being flatter; and by the much larger scutellum.

Sheep raising is among the most important agricultural industries of the state. Unlike the conditions in eastern states, the sheep industry of Utah is only indirectly associated with the farm. While the sheep owner generally lives on his farm, his sheep are kept on the public range and moved from place to place as feed and weather may make necessary. To be handled successfully on the range, sheep must be herded in large flocks. Under favorable conditions the expense account is comparatively light and returns substantial.

To this family belong the potter wasps. They differ from the paper-making wasps in being solitary and in constructing their nests of mud or clay, instead of macerated woody fibre or pulp. It is perhaps one of the largest, if not the largest, families in the Vespoidea, and is well represented in all parts of the world by many genera and species.

This family is restricted to the paper-making wasps, all social species living in large communities and having three distinct sexes, female, worker, and male, thus agreeing with the social bees, the Apidea and Bombidae, and with many ants, Dorylidae, Myrmicidae, Formicidae, etc.

Bulletin No. 77 - Horse Feeding, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
Previous experiments reported by this Station have shown the value of lucern, the principal forage crop of this section, when fed to cattle, sheep and hogs. The main part of this bulletin is devoted to the value of lucern when fed to horses, though a brief review of the work previously done at this Station in connection with the subject of horse-feeding is included. There has been, and is, some prejudice existing against lucern forming a part or all of the ration of horses, not only in the East, where the value of this crop is not yet fully appreciated, …

In this paper 335 species are recorded, of which number 201 are regarded as new to science and are here first described. Of the 10 superfamilies, into which the order is now divided, all are represented in Alaska and are distributed into 29 families and 183 genera. Two of these genera, Dallatorrea and Hyposyntactus are new, and of the remainder, thirty have not been previously reported from North America.
Bulletin No. 76 - Forcing Lettuce, C. P. Close
Bulletin No. 76 - Forcing Lettuce, C. P. Close
UAES Bulletins
The winter growing of lettuce is not yet practiced in Utah. There is a good demand for lettuce in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and in some of the smaller towns during the winter, but this demand is supplied by the California grown product. It is yet to be determined whether or not lettuce can be grown profitably under glass in this State. The recent high prices of the winter product indicate that the forcing of a moderate amount of lettuce can be done with profit.
In the season of 1899-1900, the Experiment Station began a series of experiments with lettuce …

Bulletin No. 74 - Lead Ore In Sugar Beet Pulp, John A. Widtsoe, Lewis A. Merrill
Bulletin No. 74 - Lead Ore In Sugar Beet Pulp, John A. Widtsoe, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
The recent great development of the beet sugar industry in the State of Utah, has made the matter of utilizing the sugar beet pulp an important question for Utah farmers. That beet pulp has a high feeding value, when fed in proper combinations, has been shown conclusively since the establishment of the first beet sugar factory in the State, ten years ago. The experience of other states, and of the beet sugar producing countries of Europe, has likewise demonstrated that beet pulp may be used profitably in the feeding of farm animals. It is doubtlessly true that much is yet …

Bysson begins the discussion with a general discussion of the nests of Megachile. They place their nests in various places (cavities). The nests are always constructed of pieces of leaves – oval ones on the walls and discs (small) forming partitions between cells and bottom. The appear to choose leaves of certain plants – but are not exclusive. Ordinarily they make more nests with more cells plants – but are not exclusive. Ordinarily they make more nests with more cells than do the Osmia. At least with the following species he noted that in all cases, the eggs to be …
