Landlord Perceptions Of Homelessness In The Bear River Region, Claire Wever, Alyssa Cronin, Heather Hopkins Apr 2021

Landlord Perceptions Of Homelessness In The Bear River Region, Claire Wever, Alyssa Cronin, Heather Hopkins

Student Research Symposium

Homelessness has been rising at an alarming rate in the Bear River Region of Utah. Between 2017 and 2019, there has been a 400% increase in unsheltered homeless (HUD, 2019). Research indicates a lack of affordable housing is a likely cause (Lucero & Barker Tolman Shuler, 2020). Armed with the knowledge that finding housing is a key aspect to reduce homelessness, the present study set out to ascertain landlords’ awareness and attitudes of homelessness, as well as types of interventions they would support. Collaborating on a community-engaged project, USU social work students and faculty developed a survey of knowledge and …

Effects Of Irrigation Technology And Rate On Hemp Production, Tina Sullivan Apr 2021

Effects Of Irrigation Technology And Rate On Hemp Production, Tina Sullivan

Student Research Symposium

The industrial hemp industry is rapidly emerging in Utah - nearly 1,200 acres were permitted in the state in 2019, and new growers registered for 2020. Many questions remain on optimal production practices for this new and potentially high-value crop. Research throughout the United States is limited as more and more states issue hemp, smokable flower, and medical marijuana licenses. One for the first Utah outdoor research sites was set up for the 2020 growing season and will be repeated in 2021. Trials on fertilizer, variety, and irrigation and rate were tested in different spans (sections) of a lateral irrigation …

Evaluating Anemone And Ranunculus Production Strategies In Utah, Shannon Rauter Apr 2021

Evaluating Anemone And Ranunculus Production Strategies In Utah, Shannon Rauter

Student Research Symposium

As the number of cut flower growers in the Intermountain West increases, there is a demand for regional information about optimal planting dates, season extension, and locally adapted cultivars to improve yield and harvest timing for anemone (Anemone coronaria) and ranunculus (Ranunculus asiaticus) cut flowers. Existing grower recommendations can be problematic because the combination of late spring freezes and hot, bright summer days can delay harvests and lower flower quality. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to evaluate 1) fall and spring planting dates, 2) the use of high tunnels and insulated field production systems, 3) tuber preparation methods, …
