Comparison Of Two Fractionation Methods In The Study Of Muscle Lipids From Grain- And Grass-Finished Beef, Laura Elizabeth Taylor Dec 1964

Comparison Of Two Fractionation Methods In The Study Of Muscle Lipids From Grain- And Grass-Finished Beef, Laura Elizabeth Taylor

Masters Theses

Possible differences in composition of fat from grain- and grass-finished beef have been of interest at the University of Tennessee since Meyer et al. (1960) reported the fat of grain-finished beef to be superior in flavor to that of grass-finished beef. In later work the fat from animals of these two types of finish differed chiefly in the proportion of phospholipids and in the degree of saturation of the phospholipids (Cook, 1963; Nutt, 1963).

Observations of other workers also have focused attention on lipid fractions. Early studies showed a correlation between muscle activity and phospholipid content (Bloor, 1927; Bloor …

The Sampling, Pattern, And Survival Of The Higher Elevation Beech In The Great Smoky Mountains, Kye Chil Oh Aug 1964

The Sampling, Pattern, And Survival Of The Higher Elevation Beech In The Great Smoky Mountains, Kye Chil Oh

Doctoral Dissertations

Six "beech gap" forests in the Great Smoky Mountains between Tennessee and North Carolina were sampled for pattern of stem distribution and for stem size and survivorship of Fagus grandifolia. Several methods for approximating the adequacy of number of plots for stem count were compared in terms of relative efficiency. Stem count and basal area of all species were similar between north-facing and south-facing stands, and between more east-facing and west-facing sides of the same stand. Mean density of live beech ranged from 3705 to 7835 trees per hectare, and basal area ranged from 16.1 to 33.0 m2 …

Some Aspects Of Vitamin E And Collagen Relationships, Robert Glenn Brown Aug 1964

Some Aspects Of Vitamin E And Collagen Relationships, Robert Glenn Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

(From the Introduction)

Several clinical workers in the later 1930's reported that vitamin E was of positive therapeutic value in the treatment of primary fibrositis. At that time a role for vitamin E in connective tissue metabolism was proposed. This role was never substantiated because of the failure of other groups to repeat the original work. It was subseqently realized that the original experiments were very poorly controlled and there was no real way of knowing whether or not the results obtained were due only to chance. Since that time the idea of a vitamin E, collagen relationship …

Bryoecology Of The Appalachian Spruce-Fir Zone, Daniel Howard Norris Aug 1964

Bryoecology Of The Appalachian Spruce-Fir Zone, Daniel Howard Norris

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Ecological investigation of an area ordinarily follows a certain course. First explorations attempt to discover the nature of the flora, and ecological information is incidental to the habitat notes of collected species. Later, general qualitative observations appear regarding he vegetation of particular habitats. Only after this is a quantitative study using quadrats or other sampling techniques begun, and this quantitative work lays the foundation for future autecological, ecosystem and productivity work. Traditionally the above course is followed first by workers in vascular plant ecology, and studies of cryptograms are seldom as far advanced as that of the spermatophytes.

Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences In The State Of Indiana, Willena Stone Beagle Aug 1964

Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences In The State Of Indiana, Willena Stone Beagle

Masters Theses

This report is based upon the student's experiences and observations during a seven weeks' period of field training with the Indiana State Board of Health. The Division of Nutrition provided. the guidance for the field experiences. Approximately five weeks and two days were spent in the central office, four days in the Northeastern Branch Office, one day in the Northwestern Branch Office, and three days with the local nutritionist in Marian County. It was impossible to learn the entire health program in a limited period of time; therefore, an attempt is made to describe the program as it appeared during …

A Report Of Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences In The Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania, Jo Ann Bond Aug 1964

A Report Of Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences In The Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania, Jo Ann Bond

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The purpose of the field experience was to supplement the student's on-campus academic education in nutrition and to broaden her concept of public health work at the state and local levels. The specific objectives of the student were: (1) to study the organization, administration, and functions of an official public health agency, (2) to determine how nutrition programs are planned and executed, (3) to learn how nutrition is integrated into the overall public health program, and (4) to develop an appreciation for the programs and services of other disciplines in the public health agency.

Vegetational Succession On Three Grassy Balds Of The Great Smoky Mountains, Mary Ellen Bruhn Jun 1964

Vegetational Succession On Three Grassy Balds Of The Great Smoky Mountains, Mary Ellen Bruhn

Masters Theses

Introduction: The Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association recently requested that the National Park Service take steps to preserve three grassy balds (Andrews Bald, Spence Field, and Gregory Bald) of the Great Smoky Mountains by preventing the invasion of woody vegetation on these balds. The National Park Service requested that the University of Tennessee Department of Botany look into the problem and thus the problem was brought to the attention of the author by Dr. E. E. C. Clebsch.

This is a study of vegetation change on these three grassy balds. Special interest is given to the rate of encroachment of …
