A Preliminary Annotated Checklist Of The Foliose And Fruticose Lichens Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Barbara Jo Moore

While much of the flora of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been extensively studied, the lichens have been somewhat neglected. Degelius' Lichen Flora of the Great Smoky Mountains (1941) is the first, and until now the only extensive study of the lichens of this area. Sharp (1930) mentions Gyrophora dillenii (=Umbilicaria mammulata) from Mt. LeConte. Cain (1935), Mozingo (1954), Sierk (1958), and Hale (1961) mention several species from the Smokies. Mozingo (1961) gives keys to the genus Cladonia both in Eastern Tennessee and in the Great Smoky Mountains.

The objectives of this study were:

1. To determine the effects of feeding 13 percent protein diets, with varying energy levels, to Single Comb White Leghorn pullets, upon certain egg quality characteristics, hatchability, chick growth and mortality.

2. To determine the effect of egg size on hatching, two, and four-week body weights of Single Comb Leghorn chicks hatched from the eggs of pullets fed 13 percent protein diets with varying energy levels.

The end-breakage rate is a function of many variables, some of which can be controlled and some of which cannot. Spindle speed, ring diameter, yarn number, yarn twist, and fiber properties are some of the controllable variables. Ring wear, traveler wear, and yarn irregularity are variables that cannot be controlled.

Experiments conducted in a spinning laboratory can be carried out under test conditions that are impossible to duplicate in a textile mill. The disadvantage is that to get reproducible results long-term experiments are required if conventional test methods are used. …

The purpose of the work reported in this paper was to study the influence of level of dietary protein upon utilization of magnesium. The experiments consisted of a series of metabolic balance studies in which young adults were fed diets containing different, relatively low levels of protein and constant amounts of magnesium and other nutrients. Results will provide information concerning the influence of dietary protein upon magnesium metabolism in the adult and serve as a basis for planning a future similar study with preadolescent children.

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an unseasoned tenderizer on the flavor, juiciness, and tenderness of boneless pork chops from the longissimus dorsi muscle. The chops were obtained from the loins of 24 Duroc hogs which had been finished under four regimes: full-feed on concrete; limited-feed on concrete; full-feed on pasture; and limited-feed on pasture. Southern peas are an important vegetable crop in the Southeastern states. They constitute 11 percent of the total vegetables packed in this area and are exceeded in volume only by green beans and tomatoes (39).

Southern peas are not widely distributed by retailers throughout the United States. Discoloration during processing is believed to be the major reason preventing wide distribution (13). Also, color is a major factor of quality grade, and deterioration of color in these products results in considerable economic loss to the processor.

(Introduction) Mineral metabolism in human subjects is one aspect of the research in progress in the Nutrition Department at the University of Tennessee. When a study of magnesium metabolism was initiated a colorimetric method was sought form magnesium determinations in samples collected in the metabolic balance studies. A thiazole yellow colorimetric procedure, developed for analysis of plant tissue, was modified for analysis of ash solutions of food, feces, and urine. Recent advances in micro-techniques have made possible more extensive and thorough study of lipids and related compounds than was possible previously. Two of the most outstanding developments have been gas-liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Gas-liquid chromatography has contributed a quantitative method for fatty acid determinations while thin layer chromatography has produced an accurate and rapid method for separating various classes of lipids. A combination of these methods has opened the door to investigations which had been deferred because of inaccurate and time consuming methodology.

The testing of nuclear bombs and the subsequent release of radioactive fallout over the past 18 years has brought many problems related to the distribution of radioactive fallout and the affect of fallout on man and on his environment. The detonation of a nuclear devise produces some 170 radioactive isotopes. From these 170 isotopes there are seven gamma-ray-emitting fission products that have a half-life of such significant length that they are important in world-wide radioactive fallout problems (Table I, adapted from Mortensen, 1961).

(Introduction) Frequently yearling turkeys are available in the retail market during the spring and summer and often may be obtained at a reasonable price. According to the Poultry Division of the Agricultural Marketing Service (Hauver and Kilpatrick, 1961), yearling turkeys are fully matured when slaughtered, "usually under 15 months of age" and are "reasonably tender-meated" and have "reasonably smooth-textured skin." Theoretically, yearling birds have more connective tissue than younger turkeys, and this raises the question as to whether ordinary dry-heat roasting is appropriate or whether a method which is more conducive to tenderization should be used. (From the Introduction): Previous work in this laboratory (Pendergrass, '61; Smith and Pendergrass, '62) has shown that the response of rats to avitaminosis E was related not only to the total sulfur in the diet but also to the ratio of inorganic to neutral sulfur. When rats were forced to satisfy their sulfate requirements by oxidation of organic sulfur, a decreased rate of sulfation and decreased sulfur content in the cellular lipoproteins was observed.
