The general purpose of the study is to assess the impact of acreage and yield changes on total production of important Nebraska crops. A secondary purpose is to examine two different methods of imputing the influence of changes of yield and acreage on production changes.

At present some farm programs are aimed at reducing the acreage of land used for crop production. These programs have the objectives of reducing quantities of certain farm commodities and conserving land resources. By shifting land from the production of certain farm commodities to other commodities or to grass, total farm income may be raised and the costs of farm price support and storage programs reduced. In programs to shift land use a classification of land based on economic criteria would be useful.
