NSF EPSCoR-Funded Research and Activities across the state have proven themselves to be resilient and impactful amidst challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent restrictions.

Since our last published update, Maine EPSCoR successfully completed the Year 5 No Cost Extension (NCE) report for the previous Track-1 award, the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET), thus closing out the research grant that has acted as a catalyst for cutting-edge sustainable aquaculture research in the state of Maine. As the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET) completes its final year, several other National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded grants and activities throughout the state have continued a legacy of positively impacting the state’s capacity for research, development, and STEM education.

Maine EPSCoR’s newest Track-1 grant, Molecule to Ecosystem: Environmental DNA as a Nexus of Coastal Ecosystem Sustainability for Maine (or Maine-eDNA), is no exception. National Science Foundation (NSF) advances excellence in science and engineering research and education in Maine. Two NSF EPSCoR grants are currently underway in our state, and I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of our recent achievements.

SEANET consists of 42 faculty members, 90 undergraduate students, 43 graduate students, and 3 Ph.D. candidates, who are engaged in aquaculture research at 11 institutions across the state. Recent accomplishments include:

Maine has a unique environment to drive aquaculture research, as there are roughly 3,500 miles of coastline that serve as a living laboratory. Aquaculture was identified as a key growth sector for the state by the Maine Innovation Economic Advisory Board in the 2010 Science and Technology Action Plan. In 2014 alone, the aquaculture industry grossed $137.6 million in economic impact for the state.
