he differences between the farm value and the retail cost of farm-food has long been a sore point with both consumers and producers. Whenever food prices rise noticeably consumers are inclined to believe that farmers are receiving the benefit. Farmers look at the prices in the towns and cities and then at the prices they are paid and wonder who gets the difference. Higher consumer incomes and prices paid to let farmers during recent war years have let the controversy die down somewhat, but know that prices are declining old queries are urgently renewed.

Yet the use of these chemicals does not rule out the importance of sanitation and good housekeeping in preventing the establishment of these pests. Sanitation is a basic principle of pest control. Insects found in South Dakota homes destroy and contaminate foods and ruin fabrics. Some attack our dwellings and other buildings; others bite or annoy humans, carrying diseases and causing irritation or secondary infections. Snowdrifts can be kept out of your farm yard and driveways by planting trees in the right places. Livestock make better gains on less feed when protected from cold winter winds. Debeaking is the practice of taking off part of the upper beak of a bird. This removes the part they pinch and tear flesh with, making it extremely difficult for them to be cannibalistic.
