An electrophoretic survey of genetic variation in mosquitofish populations of the Altamaha and Ogeechee drainages in Georgia revealed significant divergence (fs,=O.270) among populations within the Altamaha. Cluster analysis showed two lineages: one formed by populations from the Ogeechee drainage and the eastern and central Altamaha branches and another consisting of populations from the Ocmulgee River, the westernmost branch of the Altamaha drainage. These lineages may represent two independent forms. Average modified Rogers’ genetic distance was 0.25% between the two groups. The O_cmulgee lineage had significantly higher multilocus heterozygosity (H=0.206) than the other one (I-/=0.120). The high heterozygosity in the Ocmulgee …

This paper critically evaluates the idea of "Islamic social science" in terms of its expression in Islamic economics and, more recently, in the Islamizatio of knowledge project. Islamic economics was conceived of in the 1930s while the beginnings of the Islamization of knowledge project can be traced to the 1970s. Islamic social science seeks to bring back religious experience and spirituality into knowledge by means of the sacralization of academic dis- course. The effects of predation risk from snakes on microhabitat use of kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti and D. merriami) was studied in the Mojave Desert. I concentrated on the effects of the predator on the foraging behavior of the rodents and eliminated effects of prey capture on prey population size. Foraging stations contained three seed trays, one in each of three microhabitats (Open, Bush, Grass). The amount of seed left in each tray after one night of foraging was used to assess the responses to predation risk and other foraging costs; additional data were collected during direct observations and by trapping. …

The swine industry has grown rapidly in North Carolina in the past decade, with the majority of the growth occurring in a few counties in the Coastal Plain region of the state. With this expansion has come the problem of swine waste disposal. Mr. Blevins, a local farmer in this region, has been raising swine since 1985. The swine waste on his farm is collected in an anaerobic lagoon and then irrigated onto a bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon(L.) Pers.) pasture where cattle are fed using intensive rotational grazing techniques. A study of Mr. Blevins' farm revealed very high nitrate concentrations in …

When cardiac muscle cells become overloaded with Ca2+, spontaneous releases of Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum can occur. Such spontaneous releases normally originate within a localized region of the cell and propagate as a wave throughout the cell. The amplitude and frequency of these Ca2+ releases increase with the degree of Ca2+ loading of the cell, and are abolished by interventions which inhibit sarcoplasmic reticulum function. It is still not clear whether these releases are triggered by a rise in the [Ca2+] in the lumen of the sarcoplasmic reticulum or by a rise in cytoplasmic [Ca2+]. Such releases may, however, …

Studies of amplification and/or overexpression of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras in breast cancer have shown that each is associated with a poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility that there is a preferred sequence of amplification of these oncogenes in breast cancer. The frequencies of amplification and patterns of co-amplification of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras were studied in a group of 84 breast cancers. The data suggested a preferred sequence of amplification that consisted of c-myc amplification-HER-2/neu amplification-H-ras amplification. This model was supported by loglinear analysis.
