Opensim-Based Musculoskeletal Modeling: Foundation For Interactive Obstetric Simulator, Bahador Dodge
Opensim-Based Musculoskeletal Modeling: Foundation For Interactive Obstetric Simulator, Bahador Dodge
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The use of mathematical and computational models to understand complex biological systems, such as the human birth process, is a rapidly growing field in medicine. These models can be used to optimize and personalize medical treatments for individual patients, enhance training, and aid in educational efforts. While recent advancements in healthcare, particularly in obstetrics, have improved care for mothers and babies, studies and government reports indicate a rising rate of maternal mortality in the United States.
Despite this rising trend, there is a lack of detailed studies concerning the use of modeling and simulation to develop an interactive obstetrics simulator …
Tick Control Methods For Amblyomma Americanum In Virginia: Applications And Modeling, Alexis Lynn White
Tick Control Methods For Amblyomma Americanum In Virginia: Applications And Modeling, Alexis Lynn White
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Tick-borne diseases continue to increase in the United States, and yet no comprehensive method of tick control currently exists. The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is an aggressive human-biting tick and vector of several pathogens which effect both humans and other animals. Standard control methods do not work as well for A. americanum as they do for the more commonly studied blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. TickBot, a tick-killing robot, is a potential method to control A. americanum that lures ticks to its path with carbon dioxide and the ticks die from contact with a permethrin-treated cloth that is …
New Methods To Improve Protein Structure Modeling, Maha Abdelrasoul
New Methods To Improve Protein Structure Modeling, Maha Abdelrasoul
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Proteins are considered the central compound necessary for life, as they play a crucial role in governing several life processes by performing the most essential biological and chemical functions in every living cell. Understanding protein structures and functions will lead to a significant advance in life science and biology. Such knowledge is vital for various fields such as drug development and synthetic biofuels production.
Most proteins have definite shapes that they fold into, which are the most stable state they can adopt. Due to the fact that the protein structure information provides important insight into its functions, many research efforts …
Gender Differences In Vo2 And Hr Kinetics At The Onset Of Moderate And Heavy Exercise Intensity In Adolescents, Nicola Lai, Alessandro Martis, Alfredo Belfiori, Fatima Tolentino-Silva, Melita M. Nasca, James Strainic, Marco E. Cabrera
Gender Differences In Vo2 And Hr Kinetics At The Onset Of Moderate And Heavy Exercise Intensity In Adolescents, Nicola Lai, Alessandro Martis, Alfredo Belfiori, Fatima Tolentino-Silva, Melita M. Nasca, James Strainic, Marco E. Cabrera
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The majority of the studies on VO2 kinetics in pediatric populations investigated gender differences in prepubertal children during submaximal intensity exercise, but studies are lacking in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that gender differences exist in the VO2 and heart rate (HR) kinetic responses to moderate (M) and heavy (H) intensity exercise in adolescents. Twenty-one healthy African-American adolescents (9 males, 15.8 ± 1.1 year; 12 females, 15.7 ± 1 year) performed constant work load exercise on a cycle ergometer at M and H. The VO2 kinetics of the male group was …

Systematic Ichthyofaunal Surveys In Urban And Non-Urban Watersheds, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, Amanda Schutt, Suzy Short
Virginia Journal of Science
Objectives were to model fish species richness relative to natural and anthropogenic variables in Quantico Creek, a forested undisturbed stream environment, and Cameron Run, a highly disturbed urban stream environment in the lower Piedmont-Fall Line region of the Potomac River watershed. Species richness in all stream orders (e.g. avg. range=2.5-9.65 in 1st-3rd orders) of Quantico Creek were significantly higher than those (e.g. avg. range=2.1- 7.6 in 1st -4th orders) of Cameron Run. Fish species richness in Quantico Creek watershed can be modeled by eight factors: season, stream order, elevation, river km, stream width and depth, watershed size, and percent of …
Understanding The Success And Failure Of Oyster Populations: The Importance Of Sampled Variables And Sample Timing, Thomas M. Soniat, Eric N. Powell, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck
Understanding The Success And Failure Of Oyster Populations: The Importance Of Sampled Variables And Sample Timing, Thomas M. Soniat, Eric N. Powell, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck

One of the primary obstacles to understanding why some oyster populations are successful and others are not is the complex interaction of environmental variables with oyster physiology and with such population variables as the rates of recruitment and juvenile mortality. A numerical model is useful in investigating how population structure originates out of this complexity. We have monitored a suite of environmental conditions over an environmental gradient to document the importance of short time-scale variations in such variables as food supply, turbidity, and salinity. Then, using a coupled oyster disease population dynamics model, we examine the need for short rime-scale …
Modeling Plankton Community Structure Under Environmental Forcing On The Southeastern United States Continental Shelf, Andrew Glenn Edward Haskell
Modeling Plankton Community Structure Under Environmental Forcing On The Southeastern United States Continental Shelf, Andrew Glenn Edward Haskell
OES Theses and Dissertations
A system of coupled ordinary differential equations was developed to investigate the time-dependent behavior of phytoplankton, copepod, and doliolid populations associated with upwelling features on the outer southeastern U.S. continental shelf. Model equations describe the interactions of nitrate, ammonium, two phytoplankton size fractions, five copepod developmental stages, doliolids, and a detrital pool. Model dynamics are based primarily upon data obtained from field and laboratory experiments made for southeastern U.S. continental shelf plankton populations. Numerous simulations were performed to investigate the effects of environmental variability on the temporal distribution of the structure of resident plankton populations. Variations on a reference simulation, …
