Analysis Of Student Learning Gains In A Biochemistry Cure Course During The Mandatory Covid-19 Shift To Online Learning, Ambika Kapil, Santanu De, Arthur Sikora

Biology Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, institutions across the world have had to make modifications to existing curricula, especially in the experimental science lab. There is a need to better understand student learning in this environment. Using the Participant Perception Indicator (PPI) survey, we measure the students’ knowledge, experience, and confidence (KEC) growth over the course of a fully online biochemistry course. Using a combination of video explanations, experimental procedure documents and sample data students completed the Biochemistry Authentic Scientific Inquiry Lab (BASIL) Course-based Undergraduate Experience (CURE) in summer 2020. The results and analysis of the survey data gave light …

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affects approximately 37 million people worldwide and results in over 1 million deaths annually. A class of drugs first developed in 1995 inhibits the enzyme HIV‐1 protease, thus preventing the maturation of an HIV precursor protein. There are now over 10 protease inhibitors available to treat HIV. Multiple mutations in the protein have made this treatment less effective. The CREST (Connecting Researchers, Educators, and STudents) team at Nova Southeastern University modeled the interaction between HIV‐1 protease and its competitive inhibitors. Darunavir is currently one of the strongest competitive inhibitors, as it binds effectively to the substrate …

Navigating Healthcare Science Student Learning And Engagement Through Implementation Of A Virtual Classroom, Santanu De, Gesulla Cavanaugh

Biology Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Objective. This study explored whether virtual classrooms can be utilized to facilitate student learning and engagement. Background. University students and their learning approaches undergo constant changes, mainly due to advances in technology. Therefore, student expectations are continuously shifting. Although technology allows easier access to learning material, students still depend on a structured learning environment facilitated by an instructor to receive and process the correct information. Methods. A virtual classroom developed and housed in Second Life was used to deliver a week-long course on health promotion. Thirty students from different healthcare science programs participated in the study. After …

The mammalian X chromosome is characterized by high level of conservation. On the contrary the Cetartiodactyl X chromosome displays variation in morphology and G-banding pattern. It is hypothesized that X chromosome has undergone multiple rearrangements during Cetartiodactyla speciation. To investigate the evolution of this sex chromosome we have selected 26 BAC clones from cattle CHORI-240 library evenly distributed along the cattle X chromosome. High-resolution maps were obtained by fluorescence in situ hybridisation in a representative range of cetartiodactyl species from different families: pig (Suidae), gray whale (Eschrichtiidae), pilot whale (Delphinidae), hippopotamus (Hippopotamidae), Java mouse deer (Tragulidae), pronghorn (Antilocapridae), Siberian musk …

Numerous Carnivora karyotype evolution investigations have been performed by classical and molecular cytogenetics and were supplemented by reconstructions of the Ancestral Carnivora Karyotype (ACK). However, the group of Pinnipedia was not studied in detail. Here we reconstruct pinniped karyotype evolution and refine ACK using published and our new painting data for 10 pinniped species. The combination of human (HSA) and domestic dog (CFA) whole-chromosome painting probes was used for the construction of the comparative chromosome maps for species from all three pinniped families: Odobenidae– Odobenus rosmarus Linnaeus, 1758, Phocidae – Phoca vitulina Linnaeus, 1758, Pusa sibirica Gmelin, 1788, Erignathus barbatus …

Today we count some 62,000 species of vertebrates (half are fishes) including some 550 species of mammals on earth. The genome sequencing of non-laboratory species in recent years is expanding our breadth and understanding of genetic bases of adaptation and evolution in varied and amazing ways.

Recent completion and inspection of whole genome sequence and assembly for over 200 species of mammals, from platypus to panda to human, offer the prospect of a better view of the patterns of changes within genome organization across the mammalian radiations. In 2009 my colleagues and I have created Genome-10K, an international consortium of …

Protein 14-3-3 Eta Is Essential For Normal Meiotic Spindle Assembly In Mouse Eggs, Santanu De, Shawn Davis, Daniel Letwin, Cyrus Mozena, Douglas Kline

Biology Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The 14-3-3 proteins constitute a family of conserved, acidic proteins in a variety of organisms, regulating important intracellular events including cell cycle control, apoptosis, signal transduction and embryonic development. However, little is known about the functions of 14-3-3 in mammalian reproduction. There are seven mammalian isoforms of 14-3-3 (beta, gamma, epsilon, eta, zeta, tau/theta and sigma) encoded by different genes. We previously reported accumulation and co-localization of a specific isoform of 14-3-3, namely 14-3-3 eta, in the region of meiotic spindle apparatus in mouse eggs. To determine the role of 14-3-3 eta, we microinjected mouse oocytes with a translation-blocking morpholino …
