During two winters, 96 beef cows in late gestation were utilized in 60-day precalving feeding trials to evaluate supplementation for cows fed ammoniated wheat straw. Treatments included: control--mineral supplement only (C), 3 lbs milo + mineral (3M), 6 lb milo + mineral (6M), and 2.75 lb milo + .75 lb soybean meal + mineral (SBM). 3M increased (P<.05) cow gain over control but body condition changes were similar. 6M and SBM resulted in similar gains and body weight changes, which were higher than those of cows receiving either C or 3M. Birth weight of calves, percent cycling at the start of breeding, and percent pregnant after a 60-day breeding season were not affected by treatment. Natural protein appears to be a major limiting nutrient in cows fed ammoniated wheat straw.

Corn grain samples collected over several years were used to develop equations for dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, and ether extract (crude fat). Two computer models were used to select samples having a range of spectra (presumably a range of nutrient values) for developing calibration equations. Both methods selected an unexpectedly small number of samples; however, only the prediction of crude fiber appears questionable. Although coefficients of determination values are expected to be low with a small number of samples, standard errors of validation and prediction are consistently lower than those of standard (AOAC) methods, suggesting that the technology …

An experiment was conducted to determine the adjuvanticity of recombinant bovine interleukin-1β (rBoIL-1β) and recombinant bovine interleukin-2 (rBoIL-2) administered in conjunction with a single S. suis vaccination in pigs. Sixty, 4-wk-old pigs were allotted to 8 groups: 1) nonvaccinated controls; 2) vaccinated controls; 3) rBoIL-Iβ, 100 ng/kg; 4)rBoIL-lβ, 1000 ng/kg; 5) rBoIL-1β, 10,000 ng/kg; 6) rBoIL-2, 2.5 µg/kg; 7) rBoIL-2, 25 µg/kg; and 8) rBoIL-2, 250 µg/kg. One hundred-eight gilts with an average initial wt of 129 lb were utilized to determine the effects of porcine somatotropin (pST) and dietary phosphorus on growth performance and bone mineralization and mechanical properties during the finishing phase (129 to 230 lb) and a 35 d post-finishing phase. Gilts were injected daily with placebo (control) or 4 mg pST and fed diets containing .4, .8, or 1.2% P during the finishing phase. Administration of pST improved F/G 18%, increased ADG 8%, and decreased daily feed intake 9%. There was a quadratic response to P, because gilts receiving the .8% P diet …

Eighty crossbred barrows initially weighing 70.5 lb were used in a 5 wk trial to determine the optimum dosage of porcine somatotropin (PST) required to promote maximum growth response in growing pigs fed diets containing either 1.0 or 2.0% lysine. Pigs received a daily injection of placebo or 2, 4, or 8 mg pST in combination with one of two experimental diets containing either 1.0 or 2.0% dietary lysine. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of gene expression for the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor, heat treatment, and concentration of lysine in the diet on nutritional value of soybeans for finishing pigs. In Experiment 1, 108 pigs (113 lb avg initial wt) were fed diets with two soybean cultivars (Williams 82 and Amsoy 71), with (+K) and without (-K) gene expression for the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor, subjected to three heat treatments (112-, 3/4-, and full-roasting). One hundred and sixty pigs averaging 127.4 lb were used to determine the benefit of 5% supplemental fat and (or) .20% lysine on growth performance and carcass characteristics. The trial consisted of four treatments: 1) a .61 %, lysine milo-soybean meal control diet; 2) control + 5% fat; 3) control + .20% lysine; 4) control + 5% fat and .20% lysine. Six cannulated barrows and two hundred eighty-eight chicks were used in an experiment to determine the value of an in vitro protein digestibility assay (pepsin digest) for identification of sorghum parent lines with improved nutritional value. The barrows were used to determine digestibility of the experimental sorghums at the terminal ileum and for the total digestive tract. Due to a limited supply of the sorghums, broiler chicks were used as a model to predict the value of the experimental sorghums for growth performance. Four hundred twenty pigs (21 d of age and 12.3 lb avg initial wt) were used to determine if adding soybean oil, lecithin, and monoglyceride to diets containing tallow affects nutrient digestibility, serum lipids, and growth performance. Treatments were: 1) a high nutrient density diet (HNOD) with 10% soybean oil; 2) HNDD with 10% tallow; 3, 4, and 5) diet 2 with 9% tallow and 1% soybean oil, lecithin, and monoglyceride, respectively. Eighty crossbred barrows (initial wt = 131 lb) were utilized to determine the dietary threonine requirement of finishing pigs injected with porcine somatotropin (PST). Barrows were injected daily in the extensor muscle of the neck with either 4 mg pST or a placebo and fed diets containing either .45, .55, .65, or .75% threonine. All other amino acids, vitamins, and minerals were calculated to be at least double current requirements for finishing pigs so as not to limit performance. An on-farm field study utilizing 287 crossbred sows was conducted to investigate the influence of additional dietary lysine during lactation on sow and litter performance. At farrowing, sows were randomly assigned to one of two milo-soybean meal diets containing either .65% (13.5 % CP) or .85% lysine (16.3% CP). Average sow parity was 3.75, and sows on both treatments had a similar number of pigs born alive and similar pig and litter birth weights. In Trial 1, 91 Holstein calves were fed starters containing either soybean meal (SBM), extruded soybeans (ESB), roasted soybeans (RSB), SBM+soy oil (SO), or SBM+rumen inert fat (RIF) from birth to 10 wk of age. There were no differences in overall feed consumption, except that calves fed RSB consumed more than calves fed SBM+SO. There were no significant differences in weight gains, but calves fed SBM+SO tended to gain less. Holstein heifers from the Kansas State University Dairy Teaching and Research Unit were used from 3 mo of age until 21 d before estimated date of calving. They were fed either 100 (control, C) or 115% (enhanced, E) of the 1989 National Research Council (NRC) requirements for major nutrients from 3 to 12 mo of age, then, until 21 d before freshening, the treatments were switched from 100 to 115% NRC (CE) or from 115 to 100% NRC (EC). After release of fly parasites in Kansas dairies during 1991, parasitism increased from May to late June then dropped in July. The parasite released was Spalangea nigroaenea of Kansas origin to assure its adaption to Kansas conditions. Additional studies of fly parasite releases are needed to develop a reliable fly reduction program for Kansas dairies before fly parasite purchases can be reliably recommended. Forty-four Holstein calves were fed milk replacers with varied concentrations of vitamins A and E from 3 to 45 d of age to determine their effects on concentrations of plasma vitamin A (retinol and retinyl palmitate) and vitamin E (a- tocopherol), lymphocyte and neutrophil functions, and health of calves. Plasma a-tocopherol was unaffected by increased vitamin A supplementation. Fecal scores, and eye and nose membrane responses were improved with increased vitamin A and lower vitamin E concentration, whereas the same treatment tended to reduce neutrophil cytotoxic and bactericidal activity by 6 wk of age. Twenty four pigs were weaned immediately at farrowing, reared artificially for 21 d, and then used in a 35-d nursery experiment to determine the effects of essential fatty acid deficiency on immune function. Treatments were: 1) a semi-purified diet deficient in essential fatty acids and 2) diet 1 with 2% added linoleic acid. Conversion of linoleic acid to linolenic and then arachidonic acid is a normal step in fatty acid metabolism. Metabolites of arachidonic acid are thought to have a role in mediating immune function. On January 1, 1991, a enterprise record program was implemented on 13 swine operations in Kansas. The program evaluates economic criteria in the areas of variable and fixed costs, labor, marketing, and production and is conducted in cooperation with extension specialists and swine producers in Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Every six months, producers' records are summarized, and the data are pooled to form state and regional averages. This data base is then divided into the top, middle)and bottom third of producers based solely on profit per cwt. of pork produced. One hundred and seventy pigs, averaging 11.88 lb and 21 d of age, were utilized in a 35 d experiment evaluating the effect of moist extrusion of soy products on growth performance and nutrient digestibility. Pigs were fed one of seven experimental diets for the first 14 d of the trial. A diet containing all milk protein served as a control. Comparisons were made between pigs fed the milk control diet and diets containing either defatted soy flakes, soy protein concentrate, or experimental soy protein concentrate. Eighty nine steers with different proportions of Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Brahman, and Gelbvieh breeding from rotational and terminal crossbreeding systems were produced in Louisiana and finished at KSU. Half of each breed group was placed in the feedlot at weaning (calves) and the other half as yearlings. Half of the each group was slaughtered at a low (0.3-0.4 in.), and the other half at high (0.5 - 0.6 in.) fat thickness. As percentage of Charolais and Gelbvieh breeding increased, feedlot performance improved. As percentage of Charolais, Gelbvieh, and Angus increased, carcass desirability improved. One-hundred twenty crossbred barrows initially weighing 68.7 lb were used to determine the lysine requirement of growing pigs injected with 5 mg/d porcine somatotropin (PST) during a 5-wk growth trial. Pigs received one of six levels of dietary lysine (.7, 1.1, 1.5, 1.9,2.3, or 2.7%) and were injected daily with either 5 mg pST or placebo. During the 5 wk trial, pST-injected pigs had increased average daily gain (ADG), decreased average daily feed intake (ADFI), and improved feed conversion (F/G) compared with placebo-injected pigs. The performance response to a stepwise increase in the level of supplement fed to cows across the winter supplementation period was studied by feeding 112 Hereford x Angus cows the following treatments: dehydrated alfalfa pellets (DEHY) or soybean meal/grain sorghum (SS), each either level-fed (constant daily amount from December 1 to calving) or fed in a step-up program (low level from December 1 to 30; moderate level from December 31 to January 29; high level from January 30 to calving; avg = amount fed with level-feeding). Two hundred and forty finishing pigs were utilized to evaluate the effect of fat source and level on growing pig performance and carcass characteristics. Pigs were fed a milo-soybean meal diet balanced on a constant energy:lysine and energy:protein ratio. Dietary treatments were: 1) control; 2,3,4) 2.5, 5.0, or 7.5% added soybean oil; 5 and 6) 5.0 or 7.5% added tallow. In comparing pigs fed soybean oil to tallow, there were no significant effects on feed intake, average daily gain, or feed to gain ratio. Soybean oil additions compared to tallow resulted in carcasses with significantly more average backfat as well …

Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) offers the potential for rapid, low-cost analyses of meat samples. Beef and pork samples were analyzed by both standard laboratory (AOAC) methods and NIRS. Regression equations were developed to relate the two methods. Coefficients of determination between NIRS and AOAC results were .929 for dry matter, .965 for crude protein, and .996 for ether extract. NIRS and AOAC procedures yielded very similar results (DM, 38.82 vs 38.58; CP, 17.78 vs. 17.83; and EE, 18.83 vs. 18.00). NIRS appears to be a rapid and reliable predictor of nutritional composition of ground beef and pork based on regression …
