Use Of A Handheld Thermal Torch As A Herbicide-Resistance Management Tool, J. Hoyle, J. Reeves, E. Alderman

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Handheld thermal torches could possibly become a tool to reduce glyphosate-resistant annual bluegrass populations. One month after treatment, 5- and 6-second handheld thermal heat treatments reduced annual bluegrass populations by 50 and 60%, respectively.

A number of the cultivars included in the 2012 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program Tall Fescue Test performed well and showed good brown patch resistance in southern Kansas during the 2014 growing season.

In 2001, many of us were brought to our knees, literally -- it allowed for a better view of winter-damaged zoysiagrass, brown patch- infested tall fescue, or anthracnose-stricken creeping bentgrass. K-State's turfgrass research team is growing. We have four faculty in horticulture and one in plant pathology who dedicate their research efforts to improving turfgrass in Kansas. 1997 was a successful research year. Not only were numerous studies initiated and completed, as evidenced by the work reported herein, but we were also successful in obtaining funding for future work. K-State received four grants from the United States Golf Association in 1997. Dr. Bingru Huang got funding for at least 1 year to work on managing creeping bentgrass through our summer stress periods. Dr. Ned Tisserat received funding for a 3-year project on the biology and management of spring dead spot in bermudagrass.
