Locus Coeruleus And Hippocampal Tyrosine Hydroxylase Levels In A Pressure-Overload Model Of Heart Disease, Luke A. Johnson Mar 2013

Locus Coeruleus And Hippocampal Tyrosine Hydroxylase Levels In A Pressure-Overload Model Of Heart Disease, Luke A. Johnson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Studies have indicated that approximately 30% of people with heart disease experience major depressive disorder (MDD). Despite strong clinical evidence of a link between the two diseases, the neurobiological processes involved in the relationship are poorly understood. A growing number of studies are revealing similar neuroanatomical and neurochemical abnormalities resulting from both depression and heart disease. The locus coeruleus (LC) is a group of neurons in the pons that synthesize and release norepinephrine, and that is known to play a significant role in depression pathobiology. For example, there is evidence that tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is elevated in the LC in …

The purpose of this review is to consolidate the results of various exercise protocols on the effects of sleep deprivation to make a general conclusion regarding the effect on cognition. This will give insight into the future of research regarding how exercise may combat performance decrements seen when sleep deprived. There are several inconsistencies among current research concerning exercise and sleep deprivation; a standard needs to be created so the results of these studies can be …

Localization And Expression Of Gfrα2 Receptors In Neonatal And Adolescent Mouse Heart., Bryan Gunter May 2012

Localization And Expression Of Gfrα2 Receptors In Neonatal And Adolescent Mouse Heart., Bryan Gunter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Neurturin (NRTN), a member of the glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF) family, is required in the development of parasympathetic cholinergic neurons. It signals through binding to a glycosyl-phophatidyl inositol (GPI)-linked receptor, GDNF family receptor α2 (GFRα2), which couples to Ret tyrosine kinase. Studies of NRTN knockout mice have shown that NRTN is essential for normal cholinergic innervation of the heart, but the precise role of NRTN remains unknown. For NRTN to evoke a biological response, GFRα2 must be localized to the surface of target neurons. The aim of this study was to determine the expression and localization of GFRα2 at …

Effects Of Microgravity On Mucin Production In The Urinary Bladder In Mice., Brandon Farmer May 2012

Effects Of Microgravity On Mucin Production In The Urinary Bladder In Mice., Brandon Farmer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The effects of the microgravity of spaceflight are largely unexplored with regard to biological tissues. One particular area of interest is the possible effects microgravity could have on the production of mucins. To determine the possible effects of microgravity on mucin production in the urinary bladder, we examined the transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder from female mice that were flown on the space shuttle Endeavour for 12 days in August, 2007. The flight tissue was compared to tissues from two control groups of animals, ground control and baseline. This study utilized three sets of female mice, with each set …

The Effect Of Ultraviolet Light On Cell Viability, Dna Damage And Repair In Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome And Bj Fibroblasts., Mckayla Johnson May 2011

The Effect Of Ultraviolet Light On Cell Viability, Dna Damage And Repair In Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome And Bj Fibroblasts., Mckayla Johnson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Patients of Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) display a rate of aging up to ten times that of normal human populations. It might be expected that HGPS cells would have a decreased ability to repair DNA damage through the cell cycle as compared to normal cells such as those of the BJ cell line since DNA damage accumulation is a hallmark phenotype of aging. On earth, we are exposed to far more ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-315 nm) and UV-A (315-400 nm) than UV-C (100-280 nm) radiation, since the latter is filtered-out by the atmospheric ozone layer. The relative sensitivity of prematurely aging …

The Effects Of The Vitamin E Isomers Gamma Tocopherol And Gamma Tocotrienol On The Nfkb Pathway In The Pc-3 Cell Line., Brittney Rudder May 2011

The Effects Of The Vitamin E Isomers Gamma Tocopherol And Gamma Tocotrienol On The Nfkb Pathway In The Pc-3 Cell Line., Brittney Rudder

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Regions along the Mediterranean and Southern Asia have lower prostate cancer incidence compared to the rest of the world. It has been hypothesized that one of the potential contributing factors for this low incidence includes a higher intake of vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols). This study examines the potential of gamma tocopherol (GT) and gamma tocotrienol (GT3) to reduce prostate cancer proliferation by examining their effects on the NFκB pathway. NFκB is known to inhibit apoptosis in cancer cells. Our data shows that both GT and GT3 are capable of down regulation of NFκB precursors and up regulation of Caspase …

Impacts Of Goat Browsing And Disease On Lilium Grayi, Gray's Lily, On Roan Mountain., Joseph Powell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The flora of southern Appalachian high elevation balds has strong representation of northern disjuncts and regional endemics. Among the endemics, the showy Lilium grayi (Gray’s Lily), is most noteworthy for its historical significance and for a high public profile. As bald vegetation changes in response to human and natural environmental shifts, active bald management has been implemented on public lands. Among managed balds, the Roan Mountain massif supports a large population of L. grayi. The purpose of this study was to describe the demography of adult plants, compare browsed and non-browsed plots, and determine the extent to which disease …

Effects Of Vitamin E Isomer, Gamma Tocotrienol (Gt3), At Inhibiting Cell Growth And Inducing Apoptosis In Colon Cancer Cell Line Hct-116., Havya Dave

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Colorectal cancer is the third most prominent cancer world-wide and it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Many dietary components affect the risk of developing colorectal cancer, such as Vitamin E. Of the eight isomers of Vitamin E, four have a tocotrienol structure. Tocotrienols are found at highest concentrations in palm oil, which is ingested more in areas of Asia where the incidence of colorectal cancer is the lowest, suggesting a role of tocotrienols in the prevention of colorectal cancer. The metabolism of Arachidonic acid pathway produces a host of pro-inflammatory metabolites either by …

Calcium Provision In A Placentotrophic Lizard: Structural Differentiation Reflects Functional Specialization., Haley K. Stinnett May 2011

Calcium Provision In A Placentotrophic Lizard: Structural Differentiation Reflects Functional Specialization., Haley K. Stinnett

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Viviparity (live birth) and placentation have evolved in more than 100 lineages of squamate reptiles. However, highly placentotrophic species in which embryos receive the majority of nutrients for development via maternal transport across a placenta are rare. Pseudemoia pagenstecheri is a viviparous Australian scincid lizard with extensive placental transfer of nutrients. For example, 90% of neonate calcium is received via placental transfer. This species has a regionally differentiated chorioallantoic placenta distinguished by an elliptical-shaped region, the placentome. The placentome is characterized by hypertrophied uterine and embryonic epithelial cells supported by dense vascular networks. The remainder of the chorioallantoic placenta is …

Expression Of Human Neutrophil Elastase In K. Lactis., Haley M. Klimecki May 2010

Expression Of Human Neutrophil Elastase In K. Lactis., Haley M. Klimecki

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Human neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell and provide the body with a line of defense against foreign, infectious microorganisms. Contained within the azurophilic granules in the cytoplasm of neutrophils are three serine proteases, Human Neutrophil Elastase, Cathepsin G, and Protease 3. Once a foreign bacterium is engulfed by white blood cells, these enzymes attack and degrade the invading body, thus killing it (Reeves et al., 2002). The focus of this research is centered on the production of one of the serine proteases, human neutrophil elastase (HNE), and while the importance of HNE can be seen, …

Forest Change And Balsam Woolly Adelgig Infestation In High Elevation Forests Of Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina., Laura Lusk

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Black Mountain range of western North Carolina supports some of the most extensive, but threatened high elevation forests in the southern Appalachians. Of particular note, the insect pathogen, balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratzeburg) has been present on Mt. Mitchell for over fifty years. In anticipation of potential changes in forest composition, vegetation surveys were first conducted in 1966 on nine one-acre plots near the summit of Mt. Mitchell. These plots were re-surveyed in 1978, 1985 and 2002. The purpose of this study was to re-census those plots and use those data to analyze long-term trends in forest …
